    The Semiotics of Spider Diagrams

    Spider diagrams are based on Euler and Venn/Peirce diagrams, forming a system which is as expressive as monadic first orderlogic with equality. Rather than being primarily intended for logicians,spider diagrams were developed at the end of the 1990s in the context of visual modelling and software specification. We examine the original goals of the designers, the ways in which the notation has evolved and itsconnection with the philosophical origins of the logical diagrams of Euler, Venn and Peirce on which spider diagrams are based. Using Peirce's concepts and classification of signs, we analyse the ways in which different sign types are exploited in the notation. Our hope is that this analysis may be of interest beyond those readers particularly interested in spider diagrams, and act as a case study in deconstructing a simple visual logic. Along the way, we discuss the need for a deeper semiotic engagement in visual modelling

    This Supplement of Historical Social Research stems from the contributions on the topic of modelling presented at the workshop “Thinking in Practice”, held at Wahn Manor House in Cologne on January 19-20, 2017. With Digital Humanities as starting point, practical examples of model building from different disciplines are considered, with the aim of contributing to the dialogue on modelling from several perspectives. Combined with theoretical considerations, this collection illustrates how the process of modelling is one of coming to know, in which the purpose of each modelling activity and the form in which models are expressed has to be taken into consideration in tandem. The modelling processes presented in this volume belong to specific traditions of scholarly and practical thinking as well as to specific contexts of production and use of models. The claim that supported the project workshop was indeed that establishing connections between different traditions of and approaches toward modelling is vital, whether these connections are complementary or intersectional. The workshop proceedings address an underpinning goal of the research project itself, namely that of examining the nature of the epistemological questions in the different traditions and how they relate to the nature of the modelled objects and the models being created. This collection is an attempt to move beyond simple representational views on modelling in order to understand modelling processes as scholarly and cultural phenomena as such

    Executable Denotational Semantics With Interaction Trees

    Interaction trees are a representation of effectful and reactive systemsdesigned to be implemented in a proof assistant such as Coq. They are equipped with a rich algebra of combinators to construct recursive and effectful computations and to reason about them equationally. Interaction trees are also an executable structure, notably via extraction, which enables testing and directly developing executable programs in Coq. To demonstrate the usefulness of interaction trees, two applications are presented. First, I develop a novel approach to verify a compiler from a simple imperative language to assembly, by proving a semantic preservation theorem which is termination-sensitive, using an equational proof. Second, I present a framework of concurrent objects, inheriting the modularity, compositionality, and executability of interaction trees. Leveraging that framework, I formally prove the correctness of a transactionally predicated map, using a novel approach to reason about objects combining the notions of linearizability and strict serializability, two well-known correctness conditions for concurrent objects
