    Adaptive and intelligent navigation of autonomous planetary rovers - A survey

    The application of robotics and autonomous systems in space has increased dramatically. The ongoing Mars rover mission involving the Curiosity rover, along with the success of its predecessors, is a key milestone that showcases the existing capabilities of robotic technology. Nevertheless, there has still been a heavy reliance on human tele-operators to drive these systems. Reducing the reliance on human experts for navigational tasks on Mars remains a major challenge due to the harsh and complex nature of the Martian terrains. The development of a truly autonomous rover system with the capability to be effectively navigated in such environments requires intelligent and adaptive methods fitting for a system with limited resources. This paper surveys a representative selection of work applicable to autonomous planetary rover navigation, discussing some ongoing challenges and promising future research directions from the perspectives of the authors

    Terramechanics and Machine Learning for the Characterization of Terrain

    An instrumented rover wheel can collect vast amounts of data about a planetary surface. Planetary surfaces are changed by complex geological processes which can be better understood with an abundance of surface data and the use of terramechanics. Identifying terrain parameters such as cohesion and angle of friction hold importance for both the rover driver and the planetary scientist. Knowledge of terrain characteristics can warn of unsafe terrain and flag potential interesting scientific sites. The instrumented wheel in this research utilizes a pressure pad to sense load and sinkage, a string potentiometer to measure slip, and records motor current draw. This thesis demonstrates the utilization of the instrumented wheel\u27s data to estimate cohesion, angle of friction and grain size and demonstrates a machine learning solution for classifying terrain types with the same data. Mars simulants available at NASA-JPL were used for the collection of the data. Two machine learning classifiers were explored: Random Forest and Support Vector Machine. Binary and multi-class classification were both demonstrated and it is proposed that the classification model can identify terrain types based on the instrumented wheel data. The Random Forest model performed best in all classification types

    Learning and Reacting with Inaccurate Prediction: Applications to Autonomous Excavation

    Motivated by autonomous excavation, this work investigates solutions to a class of problem where disturbance prediction is critical to overcoming poor performance of a feedback controller, but where the disturbance prediction is intrinsically inaccurate. Poor feedback controller performance is related to a fundamental control problem: there is only a limited amount of disturbance rejection that feedback compensation can provide. It is known, however, that predictive action can improve the disturbance rejection of a control system beyond the limitations of feedback. While prediction is desirable, the problem in excavation is that disturbance predictions are prone to error due to the variability and complexity of soil-tool interaction forces. This work proposes the use of iterative learning control to map the repetitive components of excavation forces into feedforward commands. Although feedforward action shows useful to improve excavation performance, the non-repetitive nature of soil-tool interaction forces is a source of inaccurate predictions. To explicitly address the use of imperfect predictive compensation, a disturbance observer is used to estimate the prediction error. To quantify inaccuracy in prediction, a feedforward model of excavation disturbances is interpreted as a communication channel that transmits corrupted disturbance previews, for which metrics based on the sensitivity function exist. During field trials the proposed method demonstrated the ability to iteratively achieve a desired dig geometry, independent of the initial feasibility of the excavation passes in relation to actuator saturation. Predictive commands adapted to different soil conditions and passes were repeated autonomously until a pre-specified finish quality of the trench was achieved. Evidence of improvement in disturbance rejection is presented as a comparison of sensitivity functions of systems with and without the use of predictive disturbance compensation

    Shallow neural networks for autonomous robots

    The use of Neural Networks (NNs) in modern applications is already well established thanks to the technological advancements in processing units and Deep Learning (DL), as well as the availability of deployment frameworks and services. However, the embedding of these methods in robotic systems is problematic when it comes to field operations. The use of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for such networks requires high amounts of power which would lead to shortened operational times. This is not desired since autonomous robots already need to manage their power supply to accommodate the lengths of their missions which can extend from hours to days. While external processing is possible, real-time monitoring can become unfeasible where delays are present. This also applies to autonomous robots that are deployed for underwater or space missions. For these reasons, there is a requirement for shallow but robust NN-based solutions that enhance the autonomy of a robot. This dissertation focuses on the design and meticulous parametrization complemented by methods that explain hyper-parameter importance. This is performed in the context of different settings and problems for autonomous robots in field operations. The contribution of this thesis comes in the form of autonomy augmentation for robots through shallow NNs that can potentially be embedded in future systems carrying NN processing units. This is done by implementing neural architectures that use sensor data to extract representations for event identification and learn patterns for event anticipation. This work harnesses Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTMs) as the underpinning framework for time series representation and interpretation. This has been tested in three significant problems found in field operations: hardware malfunction classification, survey trajectory classification and hazardous event forecast and detection

    Robust Control of Nonlinear Systems with applications to Aerial Manipulation and Self Driving Cars

    This work considers the problem of planning and control of robots in an environment with obstacles and external disturbances. The safety of robots is harder to achieve when planning in such uncertain environments. We describe a robust control scheme that combines three key components: system identification, uncertainty propagation, and trajectory optimization. Using this control scheme we tackle three problems. First, we develop a Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) for articulated rigid bodies and apply it to an aerial manipulation system to grasp object mid-air. Next, we tackle the problem of obstacle avoidance under unknown external disturbances. We propose two approaches, the first approach using adaptive NMPC with open- loop uncertainty propagation and the second approach using Tube NMPC. After that, we introduce dynamic models which use Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and combine them with NMPC to control a ground vehicle and an aerial manipulation system. Finally, we introduce a software framework for integrating the above algorithms to perform complex tasks. The software framework provides users with the ability to design systems that are robust to control and hardware failures where preventive action is taken before-hand. The framework also allows for safe testing of control and task logic in simulation before evaluating on the real robot. The software framework is applied to an aerial manipulation system to perform a package sorting task, and extensive experiments demonstrate the ability of the system to recover from failures. In addition to robust control, we present two related control problems. The first problem pertains to designing an obstacle avoidance controller for an underactuated system that is Lyapunov stable. We extend a standard gyroscopic obstacle avoidance controller to be applicable to an underactuated system. The second problem addresses the navigation of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) on an unstructured terrain. We propose using NMPC combined with a high fidelity physics engine to generate a reference trajectory that is dynamically feasible and accounts for unsafe areas in the terrain

    Vehicle dynamics virtual sensing and advanced motion control for highly skilled autonomous vehicles

    This dissertation is aimed at elucidating the path towards the development of a future generation of highly-skilled autonomous vehicles (HSAV). In brief, it is envisaged that future HSAVs will be able to exhibit advanced driving skills to maintain the vehicle within stable limits in spite of the driving conditions (limits of handling) or environmental adversities (e.g. low manoeuvrability surfaces). Current research lines on intelligent systems indicate that such advanced driving behaviour may be realised by means of expert systems capable of monitoring the current vehicle states, learning the road friction conditions, and adapting their behaviour depending on the identified situation. Such adaptation skills are often exhibited by professional motorsport drivers, who fine-tune their driving behaviour depending on the road geometry or tyre-friction characteristics. On this basis, expert systems incorporating advanced driving functions inspired by the techniques seen on highly-skilled drivers (e.g. high body slip control) are proposed to extend the operating region of autonomous vehicles and achieve high-level automation (e.g. manoeuvrability enhancement on low-adherence surfaces). Specifically, two major research topics are covered in detail in this dissertation to conceive these expert systems: vehicle dynamics virtual sensing and advanced motion control. With regards to the former, a comprehensive research is undertaken to propose virtual sensors able to estimate the vehicle planar motion states and learn the road friction characteristics from readily available measurements. In what concerns motion control, systems to mimic advanced driving skills and achieve robust path-following ability are pursued. An optimal coordinated action of different chassis subsystems (e.g. steering and individual torque control) is sought by the adoption of a centralised multi-actuated system framework. The virtual sensors developed in this work are validated experimentally with the Vehicle-Based Objective Tyre Testing (VBOTT) research testbed of JAGUAR LAND ROVER and the advanced motion control functions with the Multi-Actuated Ground Vehicle “DevBot” of ARRIVAL and ROBORACE.Diese Dissertation soll den Weg zur Entwicklung einer zukünftigen Generation hochqualifizierter autonomer Fahrzeuge (HSAV) aufzeigen. Kurz gesagt, es ist beabsichtigt, dass zukünftige HSAVs fortgeschrittene Fahrfähigkeiten aufweisen können, um das Fahrzeug trotz der Fahrbedingungen (Grenzen des Fahrverhaltens) oder Umgebungsbedingungen (z. B. Oberflächen mit geringer Manövrierfähigkeit) in stabilen Grenzen zu halten. Aktuelle Forschungslinien zu intelligenten Systemen weisen darauf hin, dass ein solches fortschrittliches Fahrverhalten mit Hilfe von Expertensystemen realisiert werden kann, die in der Lage sind, die aktuellen Fahrzeugzustände zu überwachen, die Straßenreibungsbedingungen kennenzulernen und ihr Verhalten in Abhängigkeit von der ermittelten Situation anzupassen. Solche Anpassungsfähigkeiten werden häufig von professionellen Motorsportfahrern gezeigt, die ihr Fahrverhalten in Abhängigkeit von der Straßengeometrie oder den Reifenreibungsmerkmalen abstimmen. Auf dieser Grundlage werden Expertensysteme mit fortschrittlichen Fahrfunktionen vorgeschlagen, die auf den Techniken hochqualifizierter Fahrer basieren (z. B. hohe Schlupfregelung), um den Betriebsbereich autonomer Fahrzeuge zu erweitern und eine Automatisierung auf hohem Niveau zu erreichen (z. B. Verbesserung der Manövrierfähigkeit auf niedrigem Niveau) -haftende Oberflächen). Um diese Expertensysteme zu konzipieren, werden zwei große Forschungsthemen in dieser Dissertation ausführlich behandelt: Fahrdynamik-virtuelle Wahrnehmung und fortschrittliche Bewegungssteuerung. In Bezug auf erstere wird eine umfassende Forschung durchgeführt, um virtuelle Sensoren vorzuschlagen, die in der Lage sind, die Bewegungszustände der Fahrzeugebenen abzuschätzen und die Straßenreibungseigenschaften aus leicht verfügbaren Messungen kennenzulernen. In Bezug auf die Bewegungssteuerung werden Systeme zur Nachahmung fortgeschrittener Fahrfähigkeiten und zum Erzielen einer robusten Wegfolgefähigkeit angestrebt. Eine optimale koordinierte Wirkung verschiedener Fahrgestellsubsysteme (z. B. Lenkung und individuelle Drehmomentsteuerung) wird durch die Annahme eines zentralisierten, mehrfach betätigten Systemrahmens angestrebt.     The fundamentals of mechanical system dynamics were established before the beginning of the industrial era. The 18th century was a very important time for science and was characterized by the development of classical mechanics. This development progressed in the 19th century, and new, important applications related to industrialization were found and studied. The development of computers in the 20th century revolutionized mechanical system dynamics owing to the development of numerical simulation. We are now in the presence of the fourth industrial revolution. Mechanical systems are increasingly integrated with electrical, fluidic, and electronic systems, and the industrial environment has become characterized by the cyber-physical systems of industry 4.0. Within this framework, the status-of-the-art has become represented by integrated mechanical systems and supported by accurate dynamic models able to predict their dynamic behavior. Therefore, mechanical systems dynamics will play a central role in forthcoming years. This Special Issue aims to disseminate the latest research findings and ideas in the field of mechanical systems dynamics, with particular emphasis on novel trends and applications

    Development of numerical and data models for the support of digital twins in offshore wind engineering

Maintenance costs and downtime can be reduced through greater information on the asset in relation to its operational loads and structural resistance to damage and so there is an increasing interest in digital twin technologies. Through digital twins, an operational asset can be replicated computationally, thus providing more information. Modelling these aspects requires a wide variety of models in different fields. To advance the feasibility of digital twin technology this thesis aims to develop the multi-disciplinary set of modelling domains which help form the basis of future digital twins. Throughout this work, results have been validated against operational data recorded from sensors on offshore structures. This has provided value and confidence to the results as it shows how well the mix of state-of-the art models compare to real world engineering systems. This research presents a portfolio of five research areas which have been published in a mix of peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. These areas are: 1) A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of an offshore wind farm conducted using a modified solver in the opensource software. This work implements actuator disk turbine models and uses Reynolds averaged Naiver Stokes approaches to represent the turbulence. This investigates the impact of modelling choices and demonstrates the impact of varied model parameters. The results are compared to operational site data and the modelling errors are quantified. There is good agreement between the models and site data. 2) An expansion on traditional CFD approaches through incorporating machine learning (ML). These ML models are used to approximate the results of the CFD and thereby allow for further analysis which retains the fidelity of CFD at comparatively negligible computational cost. The results are compared to operational site data and the errors at each step are quantified for validation. 3) A time-series forecasting of weather variables based on past measured data. A novel approach for forecasting time-series is developed and compared to two existing methods: Markov-Chains and Gradient Boosting. While this new method is more complex and requires more time to train, it has the desirable feature of incorporating seasonality at multiple timescales and thus providing a more representative time-series. 4) An investigation of the change in modal parameters in an offshore wind jacket structure from damages or from changing operational conditions. In this work the detailed design model of the structure from Ramboll is used. This section relates the measurable modal parameters to the operational condition through a modelling approach. 5) A study conducted using accelerometer data from an Offshore Substation located in a wind farm site. Operational data from 12 accelerometers is used to investigate the efficacy of several potential sensor layouts and therefore to quantify the consequence of placement decisions. The results of these developments are an overall improvement in the modelling approaches necessary towards the realisation of digital twins as well as useful development in each of the component areas. Both areas related to wind loading as well as structural dynamics have been related to operational data.
