Towards an infrastructure for preparation and control of intelligent automation systems

    Get PDF
In an attempt to handle some of the challenges of modern production, intelligent automation systems offer solutions that are flexible, adaptive, and collaborative. Contrary to traditional solutions, intelligent automation systems emerged just recently and thus lack the supporting tools and infrastructure that traditional systems nowadays take for granted. To support efficient development, commissioning, and control of such systems, this thesis summarizes various lessons learned during years of implementation. Based on what was learned, this thesis investigates key features of infrastructure for modern and flexible intelligent automation systems, as well as a number of important design solutions. For example, an important question is raised whether to decentralize the global state or to give complete access to the main controller. Moreover, in order to develop such systems, a framework for virtual preparation and commissioning is presented, with the main goal to offer support for engineers. As traditional virtual commissioning solutions are not intended for preparing highly flexible, collaborative, and dynamic systems, this framework aims to provide some of the groundwork and point to a direction for fast and integrated preparation and virtual commissioning of such systems. Finally, this thesis summarizes some of the investigations made on planning as satisfiability, in order to evaluate how different methods improve planning performance. Throughout the thesis, an industrial material kitting use case exemplifies presented perspectives, lessons learned, and frameworks

A knowledge based approach to integration of products, processes and reconfigurable automation resources

The success of next generation automotive companies will depend upon their ability to adapt to ever changing market trends thus becoming highly responsive. In the automotive sector, the assembly line design and reconfiguration is an especially critical and extremely complex job. The current research addresses some of the aspects of this activity under the umbrella of a larger ongoing research project called Business Driven Automation (BDA) project. The BDA project aims to carry out complete virtual 3D modeling-based verifications of the assembly line for new or revised products in contrast to the prevalent practice of manual evaluation of effects of product change on physical resources. Classification and Quantification of Human Error in Manufacturing: A Case Study in Complex Manual Assembly

    Get PDF
Manual assembly operations are sensitive to human errors that can diminish the quality of final products. The paper shows an application of human reliability analysis in a realistic manufacturing context to identify where and why manual assembly errors occur. The techniques SHERPA and HEART were used to perform the analysis of human reliability. Three critical tasks were selected for analysis based on quality records: (1) installation of three types of brackets using fasteners, (2) fixation of a data cable to the assembly structure using cushioned loop clamps and (3) installation of cap covers to protect inlets. The identified error modes with SHERPA were: 36 action errors, nine selection errors, eight information retrieval errors and six checking errors. According to HEART, the highest human error probabilities were associated with assembly parts sensitive to geometry-related errors (brackets and cushioned loop clamps). The study showed that perceptually engaging assembly instructions seem to offer the highest potential for error reduction and performance improvement. Other identified areas of action were the improvement of the inspection process and workers’ provision with better tracking and better feedback. Implementation of assembly guidance systems could potentially benefit worker’s performance and decrease assembly errors

Robotic automation in apparel manufacturing is reviewed and investigated. Gripper design for separation and de-stacking of batch cut fabric components is identified as an important factor in implementing such automation and a study of existing gripper mechanisms is presented. New de-stacking gripper designs and processes are described together with experimental results. Single fabric component handling, alignment and registration techniques are investigated. Some of these techniques are integrated within a demonstrator robotic garment assembly cell automating the common edge binding process. Performance results are reported
