    Trabajo de InvestigaciónLa evaluación de un software lúdico es un proceso complejo por la participación de distintas áreas interdisciplinares, razón por la cual se hace indispensable valorar, apreciar y estimar los criterios de las diferentes áreas que participan en el desarrollo del mismo, por lo anterior surge la necesidad de encontrar una herramienta que permita hacer una evaluación completa a este tipo de software de allí que el propósito de esta investigación sea formular un modelo de evaluación donde los atributos de usabilidad y correspondencia didáctica de un software lúdico reúnen los criterios más importantes que se deben evaluar dentro de un software que tenga como finalidad trasmitir un conocimiento. Para ello, ha sido necesario recurrir a conceptos teóricos de usabilidad, aprendizaje, software lúdico e ingeniería de software, así mismo investigar sobre los modelos, técnicas e instrumentos de evaluación de aplicaciones de aprendizaje por diferentes autores. Las actividades principales que se realizaron son la revisión y análisis de los aspectos que se debe tener en cuenta para efectuar la evaluación de un software lúdico, así mismo determinar cuáles son las métricas con sus respectivos criterios que permiten medir su calidad.     Issues and Challenges in Teaching Secondary School Quantum Physics with Integrated STEM Education in Malaysia

    The emphasis on STEM education in the physics curriculum moves toward addressing the 21st-century demands, but its implementation is fraught with issues and challenges. This paper exposes teachers’ and students’ concerns and problems with integrated STEM education implementation and relates them to the anticipated problem in quantum physics (QP) learning and facilitation (L&F) in secondary school. The QP L&F challenges include the odd ontological worldview and abstractness of concepts, which have created serious misconceptions among teachers and students. A solution is proposed to address this difficulty, including applying an interactive simulation and a hands-on experiment. This paper also proposes a theoretical framework for developing an instructional module to cater to meaningful QP learning with integrated STEM elements. The proposed theoretical framework has several advantages, including guidance in planning an instructional module applicable to classroom activities and explaining the topic using an inquiry-based learning (IBL) approach with learning activities coordinated using the 5E Instructional Model. Nonetheless, further research is necessary to study the instructional module’s development, usability, and L&F effectiveness in the classroom

    A Right to Access Implies A Right to Know: An Open Online Platform for Research on the Readability of Law

    The widespread availability of legal materials online has opened the law to a new and greatly expanded readership. These new readers need the law to be readable by them when they encounter it. However, the available empirical research supports a conclusion that legislation is difficult to read if not incomprehensible to most citizens. We review approaches that have been used to measure the readability of text including readability metrics, cloze testing and application of machine learning. We report the creation and testing of an open online platform for readability research. This platform is made available to researchers interested in undertaking research on the readability of legal materials. To demonstrate the capabilities ofthe platform, we report its initial application to a corpus of legislation. Linguistic characteristics are extracted using the platform and then used as input features for machine learning using the Weka package. Wide divergences are found between sentences in a corpus of legislation and those in a corpus of graded reading material or in the Brown corpus (a balanced corpus of English written genres). Readability metrics are found to be of little value in classifying sentences by grade reading level (noting that such metrics were not designed to be used with isolated sentences)

    Local partnership approach for urban development in Bangladesh: a comparative study of four participatory urban development projects

    Support for Implementation of National Plans of Action or SINPA is a programme that aims to implement some of the ideas of Habitat II and National Plans of Action for Human Settlements by supporting efforts of pilot cities and disseminating the results. SINPA activities are carried out in three countries, Bangladesh, Bolivia and Zambia in three continents. Apart from these three programmes in three countries, SINPA also has a core programme at the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, responsible for overall coordination of the country specific programmes, research and dissemination. Under this core programme, a third country research component was designed to conduct a joint research together with a local research institute. There were two considerations for undertaking this research. First, the subject matter of the research should be relevant for the ongoing programmes in the three SINPA countries, as well as being suitable for wider international dissemination. And second, the selection criteria for the research subject should be manageable in such a manner that adequate secondary data and documentations are available to make the study feasible within budget and time limits. The responsibility of the present study on “Local Partnership Approach for Urban Development in Bangladesh” has been given by IHS to the Centre for Urban Studies, Dhaka, under the SINPA Core Programme Research Component

    COLAB : a hybrid knowledge representation and compilation laboratory

    Knowledge bases for real-world domains such as mechanical engineering require expressive and efficient representation and processing tools. We pursue a declarative-compilative approach to knowledge engineering. While Horn logic (as implemented in PROLOG) is well-suited for representing relational clauses, other kinds of declarative knowledge call for hybrid extensions: functional dependencies and higher-order knowledge should be modeled directly. Forward (bottom-up) reasoning should be integrated with backward (top-down) reasoning. Constraint propagation should be used wherever possible instead of search-intensive resolution. Taxonomic knowledge should be classified into an intuitive subsumption hierarchy. Our LISP-based tools provide direct translators of these declarative representations into abstract machines such as an extended Warren Abstract Machine (WAM) and specialized inference engines that are interfaced to each other. More importantly, we provide source-to-source transformers between various knowledge types, both for user convenience and machine efficiency. These formalisms with their translators and transformers have been developed as part of COLAB, a compilation laboratory for studying what we call, respectively, "vertical\u27; and "horizontal\u27; compilation of knowledge, as well as for exploring the synergetic collaboration of the knowledge representation formalisms. A case study in the realm of mechanical engineering has been an important driving force behind the development of COLAB. It will be used as the source of examples throughout the paper when discussing the enhanced formalisms, the hybrid representation architecture, and the compilers

    Analytic Provenance for Software Reverse Engineers

    Reverse engineering is a time-consuming process essential to software-security tasks such as malware analysis and vulnerability discovery. During the process, an engineer will follow multiple leads to determine how the software functions. The combination of time and possible explanations makes it difficult for the engineers to maintain a context of their findings within the overall task. Analytic provenance tools have demonstrated value in similarly complex fields that require open-ended exploration and hypothesis vetting. However, they have not been explored in the reverse engineering domain. This dissertation presents SensorRE, the first analytic provenance tool designed to support software reverse engineers. A semi-structured interview with experts led to the design and implementation of the system. We describe the visual interfaces and their integration within an existing software analysis tool. SensorRE automatically captures user\u27s sense making actions and provides a graph and storyboard view to support further analysis. User study results with both experts and graduate students demonstrate that SensorRE is easy to use and that it improved the participants\u27 exploration process
