Dental drill noise reduction using a combination of active noise control, passive noise control and adaptive filtering
Dental drills produce a characteristic high frequency, narrow band noise that is uncomfortable for patients and is also known to be harmful to dentists under prolonged exposure. It is therefore desirable to protect the patient and dentist whilst allowing two-way communication. A solution is to use a combination of the three main noise control methods, namely, Passive Noise Control (PNC), Adaptive Filtering (AF) and Active Noise Control (ANC). This paper discusses the application of the three methods to reduce dental drill noise while allowing two-way communication. Experimental setup for measuring the noise reduction by PNC is explained and results from different headphones and headphone types are presented. The implementation and results of an AF system using the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm are shown. ANC requires a modification of the LMS algorithm due to the introduction of the electro-acoustical cancellation path transfer function to compensate for the delays introduced by the control system. Therefore a cancellation path transfer function modeling method based on the filtered reference LMS (FXLMS) algorithm is presented along with preliminary results of the implementation
High frequency band communication application in Malaysia
High frequency (HF) radio frequencies are between 3 and 30 MHz.[1] Also known as the decameter band or decameter wave as the wavelengths range from one to ten decameters. Shortwave (2.310 - 25.820 MHz)[1] overlaps and is slightly lower than HF. Since the ionosphere often reflects HF radio waves quite well (a phenomenon known as skywave), this range is extensively used for medium and long range terrestrial radio communication. However, suitability of this portion of the spectrum for such communication varies greatly with a complex combination of factors[1]:
• Sunlight/darkness at site of transmission and reception
• Transmitter/receiver proximity to terminator
• Season
• Sunspot cycle
• Solar activity
• Polar aurora
• Maximum usable frequency
• Lowest usable high frequency
• Frequency of operation within the HF rang
Wireless Play and Unexpected Innovation
Part of the Volume on Digital Young, Innovation, and the Unexpected. This chapter considers play as leading to unexpected innovation in advanced wireless technologies. It concludes that much of the potential for new media to enhance innovation actually echoes much older patterns, as evidenced by comparisons to wireless history. These are patterns of privilege, particularly class and gender privilege, reinforced by strict intellectual property protections. Detailed case studies are presented of the "wardrivers," young male computer enthusiasts who helped map wi-fi signals over the past decade, and of earlier analog wireless enthusiasts. The chapter offers a solid critique of many present-day celebrations of technology-driven innovation and of the rhetoric of participatory culture
