    A Review of Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer for In‐Motion Electric Vehicles

    Dynamic wireless power transfer system (DWPT) in urban area ensures an uninterrupted power supply for electric vehicles (EVs), extending or even providing an infinite driving range with significantly reduced battery capacity. The underground power supply network also saves more space and hence is important in urban areas. It must be noted that the railways have become an indispensable form of public transportation to reduce pollution and traffic congestion. In recent years, there has been a consistent increase in the number of high‐speed railways in major cities of China, thereby improving accessibility. Wireless power transfer for train is safer and more robust when compared with conductive power transfer through pantograph mounted on the trains. Direct contact is subject to wear and tear; in particular, the average speed of modern trains has been increasing. When the pressure of pantograph is not sufficient, arcs, variations of the current, and even interruption in power supply may occur. This chapter provides a review of the latest research and development of dynamic wireless power transfer for urban EV and electric train (ET). The following key technology issues have been discussed: (1) power rails and pickups, (2) segmentations and power supply schemes, (3) circuit topologies and dynamic impedance matching, (4) control strategies, and (5) electromagnetic interference

    Wireless power transfer techniques have been gaining researchers' and industry attention due to the increasing number of battery-powered devices, such as mobile computers, mobile phones, smart devices, intelligent sensors, mainly as a way to replace the standard cable charging, but also for powering battery-less equipment. The storage capacity of batteries is an extremely important element of how a device can be used. If we talk about battery-powered electronic equipment, the autonomy is one factor that may be essential in choosing a device or another, making the solution of remote powering very attractive. A distinction has to be made between the two forms of wireless power transmission, as seen in terms of how the transmitted energy is used at the receiving point: - Transmission of information or data, when it is essential for an amount of energy to reach the receiver to restore the transmitted information; - Transmission of electric energy in the form of electromagnetic field, when the energy transfer efficiency is essential, the power being used to energize the receiving equipment.     Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer for Warehouse Robots

    The possible wireless power transfer (WPT) consists of stationary and dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) for warehouse robots power charging. The stationary wireless charging for warehouse robots has several disadvantages of long charging time, non-running, frequent charging, etc., whereas DWPT is a broad application prospect and is considered one of the best solutions above-stated problems. This paper proposes a maximum transfer efficiency and distance method in the DWPT for Warehouse Robots using a magnetic resonant (MR) inductive coupling subsection coil powered by a transmitter coil (Tx). The optimal efficiency is reached when three adjacent subsection coil (SC) are simultaneously powered on a single Tx. The two critical parameters in DWPT are Power Delivered to the Load (PDL) and Power Transfer Efficiency (PTE). The design results of an MR inductive coupling and a magnetic resonant inductive coupling subsection coil (MRSC) WPT optimized for a 20 kHz operating frequency at 8-cm, 11-cm, and 16-cm coupling distance show PTE (an MR inductive/MRSC) WPT of 85/87%, 65/70%, 45/65%, respectively, and the PDL of the MRSC WPT 3.2%, 11.1%, and 50% respectively higher than an MR inductive WPT. Results also show that the robot moves smoothly along the transmission track, and having the MRSC underneath is a less complicated system

    Challenges and Barriers of Wireless Charging Technologies for Electric Vehicles

    Electric vehicles could be a significant aid in lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Even though extensive study has been done on the features and traits of electric vehicles and the nature of their charging infrastructure, network modeling for electric vehicle manufacturing has been limited and unchanging. The necessity of wireless electric vehicle charging, based on magnetic resonance coupling, drove the primary aims for this review work. Herein, we examined the basic theoretical framework for wireless power transmission systems for EV charging and performed a software-in-the-loop analysis, in addition to carrying out a performance analysis of an EV charging system based on magnetic resonance. This study also covered power pad designs and created workable remedies for the following issues: (i) how power pad positioning affected the function of wireless charging systems and (ii) how to develop strategies to keep power efficiency at its highest level. Moreover, safety features of wireless charging systems, owing to interruption from foreign objects and/or living objects, were analyzed, and solutions were proposed to ensure such systems would operate as safely and optimally as possible

    A High Frequency Wireless Power Transfer System for Electric Vehicle Charging Using Multi-layer Non-uniform Self-resonant Coil

    Wireless EV (Electric Vehicle) charging is an emerging technology with rapid development in the past decade. Compared to wired EV chargers, wireless power transfer (WPT) enables safe and unobtrusive charging for EVs. This work proposes high frequency wireless charging using a self-resonant (SR) coil at several megahertz. A multi-layer self-resonant coil structure is proposed, allowing high quality factor coils to be fabricated from layers of inexpensive copper foil and dielectric film. Additionally, the self-resonant coil utilizes its interlayer capacitance for resonance, eliminating the external compensation capacitor and shrinking the overall volume of passive component to increase the power density. Comparing to other self-resonant coils in the literature, it exhibits the characteristics of achieving high quality factor and high inductance simultaneously. Prototype coils with 200 mm radius are fabricated and tested, achieving quality factor over 450 at 3 MHz. The fabricated air-core coil structure is low-cost and lightweight, with 200 mm radius, 3 mm thickness and only 2 oz copper traces. The power stages, including GaN (Gallium Nitride) transistor based inverter and SiC (Silicon Carbide) diode based rectifier, are designed with emphasis on reduction of PCB (Printed Circuit Board) layout parasitics. Experimental tests show 95.2% dc-dc efficiency with 6.6 kW power transferred across a 100 mm coil-to-coil distance. The power density is 52.5 kW/m2, without need for any external compensation components. This work validates the concept of high frequency compact WPT system for EV. Practical shielding design is proposed for the WPT system with self-resonant coils, considering the high frequency parallel resonance effect. Complete coil pads are fabricated and assembled, incorporating the ferrite cores, PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) spacer, and aluminum plate. The system is validated with shielded SR coils, achieving 92.3% DC-DC efficiency and 7.1 kW/dm3 volumetric power density. This work demonstrates the first 6.6-kW WPT system using compact self-resonant coils with practical shielding implementation. The concept of proposed multi-layer self-resonant coil is extended to other possible structures. Different multi-layer self-resonant coil structures are compared and analyzed, giving design guidelines for their capabilities at different system operating frequencies

    Structural behaviour of beam with HDPE plastic balls subjected to flexure load

    This paper presents the structural behavior of reinforced concrete beam embedded with high density polyethylene balls (HDPE) subjected to flexural load. The HDPE balls with 180 mm diameter were embedded to create the spherical voids in the beam which lead to reduction in its self-weight. Two beam specimens with HDPE balls (RC-HDPE) and one solid beam (RC-S) with dimension 250 mm x 300 mm x 1100 mm were cast and tested until failure. The results are analysed in the context of its ultimate load, load-deflection profile, and crack pattern and failure mode. It was found that the ultimate load of RC-HDPE was reduced by 32% compared to RC-S beam while the maximum deflection at its mid span was increased by 4%. However, RC-HDPE is noticed to be more ductile compared to RC-S beam. Both types of beams experienced flexure cracks and diagonal tension cracks before failur

    Due to the fast-growing market for an electric vehicle, it is necessary that the drawbacks involved in electric vehicle technology should be overcome, therefore introducing a wireless charging technique which is more convenient as battery cost, recharge time and weight has been removed. Different wireless charging techniques for electric vehicles are discussed. This research work investigates the feasibility of wireless power transfer for Electric Vehicles by electromagnetic resonance coupling. Wireless power transfer (WPT) for Electric Vehicles by magnetic resonance coupling is of high priority due to its efficiency, high power transmission, and more considerable charging distance. Simulation results show the energy transfer efficiency between two magnetically coupled resonating coils. However, results show the effects of parameters such as an inductor, capacitor, load and coupling coefficient on efficiency. Additionally, implementation of a closed loop circuit using a three-level cascaded PI controller for the dynamic wireless electric vehicle charging to eliminate the variation of voltage because of varied spacing existing between both coils as the vehicle is in motion and thereby delivering a constant voltage and constant current to the load is carried out. Simulation results and comparison with a single level PI controller indicate the effectiveness of the control method. A fuzzy logic and neuro-fuzzy controller are implemented for the wireless electric vehicle transfer which is seen to be more robust than the PI controller as there is no undershoot in the output voltage. Furthermore, wireless power transfer with three - level cascaded PI controller with MPPT is designed. The proposed system consists of a solar PV array, boost DC/DC converter, inverter, transmitter coil, a receiver coil, rectifier, buck converter, and batteries. The design of the MPPT controller tracks the highest voltage and current from the PV array required to charge a battery in which the highest power point voltage is 61.5 V. The stability analysis for the closed-loop system has been done and the system is asymptotically stable

    Challenges of Inductive Electric Vehicle Charging Systems in both Stationary and Dynamic Modes

    Inductive power transfer as an emerging technology has become applicable in wide power ranges including Electric Vehicle, Electric Aircraft, wheelchair, cellphone, scooter and so on. Among them, inductive Electric Vehicle (EV) charging has gained great interest in the last decade due to many merits namely contactless technology, more convenience, full automotive charging process. However, inductive EV charging systems could bring about so many issues and concerns which are addressed in this dissertation. One of the critical challenges addressed in this dissertation is a virtual inertia based IPT controller to prevent the undesirable dynamics imposed by the EVs increasing number in the grid. Another adverse issue solved in this dissertation is detecting any metal object intrusions into the charging zone to the Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) systems before leading to heat generation on the metal or risk of fire. Moreover, in this dissertation, a new self-controlled multi-power level IPT controller is developed that enables EV charging level regulation in a wide range of power; suitable for different applications from golf-cart charging system (light duty EV) to truck (heavy duty EV). The proposed controller has many merits including easy to be implemented, cons-effective, and the least complexities compared to conventional PWM methods. Additionally, in this dissertation, the online estimation of IPT parameters using primary measurement including coupling factor, battery current and battery voltage is introduced; the developed method can find immediate applications for the development of adaptive controllers for static and dynamic inductive charging systems. Finally, the last objective of this research is physics-based design optimization techniques for the magnetic structures of inductive EV charging systems for dynamic application (getting charged while in motion).     Optimum Modelling Of Flux-pipe Resonant Coils For Static And Dynamic Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer System Applicable To Electric Vehicles

    Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology enables the transfer of electrical power from the electric grid to the electric vehicles across an airgap using electromagnetic fields with the help of wireless battery chargers. WPT technology addresses most problems associated with the “plug-in” method of charging EVs like vandalization, system power losses, and safety problems due to hanging cables and opened electrical contact in addition to the flexibility of charging electric vehicles while in a static or dynamic mode of operation. Significant research has been undertaken over the years in the development of efficient WPT topologies applicable to electric vehicles. A preliminary review of these revealed that the ferrite core WPT is a promising and efficient method of charging electric vehicles. The charging method is suitable for wireless charging of electric vehicles because of its low cost, high efficiency and high power output. This research proposed the use of the flux-pipe model as a suitable ferrite core, magnetic resonance coupled-based WPT system for the charging of the electric vehicle. The traditional flux-pipe model has some specific benefits which include high coupling coefficient, high misalignment tolerance and high efficiencies under misalignment conditions. However, it has a major drawback of low power output due to the generation of an equal amount of useful and non-useful fluxes. A set of governing equations guiding the performance output of a WPT system was presented. It was identified that the losses in the WPT system can be minimized by reducing the value of the maximum magnetic flux density while the power output and efficiency can be increased by increasing the value of the coupling factor and quality factor. Based on these findings, 3-D finite element modelling was employed for the optimal design and analysis of a typical flux-pipe model for higher coupling strength, high power output and low losses. The magnetic coupling performance of flux-pipe resonant coils was enhanced with an increased number of turns along the core length relative to increasing the width of each coil turns along the coil width. The high power transfer and efficiency was attained by splitting of the coil windings into two in order to reduce intrinsic coil resistances; copper sheet was employed as a shielding material in order to reduce the eddy current losses and finally, an air gap was introduced in the ferrite core in order to reduce the core losses and invariably increased the amount of excitation current required to drive the core into saturation. The proposed optimization methodology results in the creation of two models for application in static and dynamic charging operations respectively. From the simulation results presented, the model designed for static charging operations can transfer up to 11 kW of power across the airgap at a coil-to-coil efficiency of 99.12% while the model design for dynamic charging of electric vehicles can transfer up to 13 kW of power across the airgap at a coil-to-coil efficiency of 98.64% without exceeding the average limit specified for the exposure of human body to electromagnetic fields
