In Mendes, D., Fonseca, C., Lopes, M. J., García-Alonso, J., & Murillo, J. M. (Ed.), Exploring the Role of ICTs in Healthy Aging (pp. 148-165). IGI Global. http://doi:10.4018/978-1-7998-1937-0.ch009The rate at which the Internet is growing is unstoppable due to the large number of connected smart devices. Manufacturers often develop specific protocols for their own devices that do not usually follow any standards. This hinders the interconnection and coordination of devices from different manufacturers, limiting the number of daily activities that can be supported. Some works are proposing different techniques to reduce this barrier and avoid the vendor lock-in issue. Nevertheless, this interconnection should also depends on the context. In this chapter, the authors propose a system to dynamically identify the interconnections required each specific situation depending on the context. This proposal has been tested in case studies focused in elderly people with the aim of automating their daily tasks and improving their quality of life. Further, in a world with an accelerated population aging, there is an increasing interest on developing solutions for the elderly living assistance through IoT systems. This work was supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by 4IE project (0045-4IE-4-P) funded by the Interreg V-A España-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020 program, by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through project RTI2018-094591-B-I00 (MINECO/FEDER, UE) and by the Department of Economy and Infrastructure of the Government of Extremadura (GR18112, IB18030)

The population is getting older due to higher life expectancy and lower birth rates. Medication is becoming a bigger part of older adults’ lives. However, as all people do, it is easy to forget to take medication. This forgetfulness can bring a lot of consequences, specially in older adults. This is because of their more fragile health and the complexities in their medication, resulting in lower quality of life and higher number of hospital visits. Non adherence to medication is cause by 3 main factors: patient factors, medication factors and health care providers factors. These intertwine adding to the complexity of the problem, however they can be fixed. Technological solutions were developed along the years, some academically and some are available in the current market. Nevertheless, as all solution, there is always room for improvement. This document sets out to collect the needs of older adults regarding their medication and review current developed systems, in order to idealize an innovative system capable of meeting the needs of older adults while improving current systems. This took a systematic approach, mixing adequate product development methodologies, linear and more traditional, State-Gate, and cyclical and more innovative, Lean. This resulted in a idealization of a future proof system that tries to tackle the non adherence problem as whole. From this idealization it was possible to develop and build a prototype that demonstrates its main functionalities.

Community pharmacies deliver accessible and personalized health care to populations worldwide. Provision of medicine therapy is central to this business but the continuous interactions with clients in their homes is problematic. This paper models an ecosystem of wellness for community pharmacies and presents five generations of smart pharmaceutical care systems (SPCS) for home interventions. Our project follows the design science research paradigm and is supported in an extensive review of 56 recent information systems papers. Two key challenges of Health 5.0 are addressed: digital medication management and sustainable medicine use. SPCS reveal potential to change the business model of community pharmacies. However, spanning the pharmacy boundaries with digital technologies requires (1) socio-technical strategies to differentiate their offer, (2) technologies tailored to the needs of each client, (3) collective intelligence production in medicine supply chains, and (4) humanized telecare

Monitoring of medication boxes using wireless sensors

    Get PDF
Medication adherence is a real problem among older adults which can lead to serious repercussions on their health and life. Adherence is defined by the World Health Organization as the extent to which the behavior of a person corresponds with recommendations from a health care provider. A low medication adherence to a certain prescription can undermine the treatment benefits in many cases. Moreover, taking wrong medication may lead to unwanted secondary effects, adverse health conditions, and visits to the hospital. This dissertation describes the work focused on the design, development, and research of a solution for monitoring medication boxes using attached sensors. The main contributions of this work include the development of a mobile application, a study on how to classify data from medication box gestures, an implementation of the algorithm that retrieves data from sensor boxes, and an integration of the data classification algorithm into the mobile application. A medication reminder proof-of-concept was developed in the scope of this Master’s project. Sensor data is received by the prototype through a module that integrates the connection and data transference from the sensor boxes via wireless communication. Another module implements metric extraction functions that are applied to the inertial sensor data retrieved from the sensor box. The calculated metrics, herein corresponding to features, are passed to a machine learning algorithm, integrated in the data classification and feature extraction module, for posterior data identification. An in-depth analysis on how to classify inertial data from medication box gestures was conducted during the development of the solution. This in-depth analysis included the creation of two datasets with different characteristics which were preprocessed and fed to several machine learning algorithms. The analysis of the results outputted by the algorithms is included in this document. The dataset collection took place in two different locations, corresponding to a controlled environment and to a non-controlled environment. The obtained results showed that it is possible to identify the gestures in the dataset for the controlled environment, with the best results achieving a true positive rate of 97:9%. The results obtained for the dataset of the non-controlled environment (which was created with target users) showed that there are still many aspects that need to be improved before a final version of the solution is released.
