    Experimental evaluation of a UWB-based cooperative positioning system for pedestrians in GNSS-denied environment

    Cooperative positioning (CP) utilises information sharing among multiple nodes to enable positioning in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environments. This paper reports the performance of a CP system for pedestrians using Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology in GNSS-denied environments. This data set was collected as part of a benchmarking measurement campaign carried out at the Ohio State University in October 2017. Pedestrians were equipped with a variety of sensors, including two different UWB systems, on a specially designed helmet serving as a mobile multi-sensor platform for CP. Different users were walking in stop-and-go mode along trajectories with predefined checkpoints and under various challenging environments. In the developed CP network, both Peer-to-Infrastructure (P2I) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) measurements are used for positioning of the pedestrians. It is realised that the proposed system can achieve decimetre-level accuracies (on average, around 20 cm) in the complete absence of GNSS signals, provided that the measurements from infrastructure nodes are available and the network geometry is good. In the absence of these good conditions, the results show that the average accuracy degrades to meter level. Further, it is experimentally demonstrated that inclusion of P2P cooperative range observations further enhances the positioning accuracy and, in extreme cases when only one infrastructure measurement is available, P2P CP may reduce positioning errors by up to 95%. The complete test setup, the methodology for development, and data collection are discussed in this paper. In the next version of this system, additional observations such as the Wi-Fi, camera, and other signals of opportunity will be included

    Fly, Wake-up, Find: UAV-based Energy-efficient Localization for Distributed Sensor Nodes

    A challenging application scenario in the field of industrial Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is the capability of a robot to find and query smart sensor nodes deployed at arbitrary locations in the mission area. This work explores the combination of different communication technologies, namely, Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Wake-Up Radio (WUR), with a UAV that acts as a "ubiquitous local-host"of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). First, the UAV performs the localization of the sensor node via multiple UWB range measurements, and then it flies in its proximity to perform energy-efficient data acquisition. We propose an energy-efficient and accurate localization algorithm - based on multi-lateration - that is computationally inexpensive and robust to in-field noise. Aiming at minimizing the sensor node energy consumption, we also present a communication protocol that leverages WUR technology to minimize ON-time of the power-hungry UWB transceiver on the sensors. In-field experimental evaluation demonstrates that our approach achieves a sub-meter localization precision of the sensor nodes - i.e., down to 0.6 m - using only three range measurements, and runs in 4 ms on a low power microcontroller (ARM Cortex-M4F). Due to the presence of the WUR and the proposed lightweight algorithm, the entire localization-acquisition cycle requires only 31 mJ on the sensor node. The approach is suitable for several emerging Industrial Internet of Things application scenarios where a mobile vehicle needs to estimate the location of static objects without any precise knowledge of their position

    A review of relay network on UAVS for enhanced connectivity

    One of the best evolution in technology breakthroughs is the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This aerial system is able to perform the mission in an agile environment and can reach the hard areas to perform the tasks autonomously. UAVs can be used in post-disaster situations to estimate damages, to monitor and to respond to the victims. The Ground Control Station can also provide emergency messages and ad-hoc communication to the Mobile Users of the disaster-stricken community using this network. A wireless network can also extend its communication range using UAV as a relay. Major requirements from such networks are robustness, scalability, energy efficiency and reliability. In general, UAVs are easy to deploy, have Line of Sight options and are flexible in nature. However, their 3D mobility, energy constraints, and deployment environment introduce many challenges. This paper provides a discussion of basic UAV based multi-hop relay network architecture and analyses their benefits, applications, and tradeoffs. Key design considerations and challenges are investigated finding fundamental issues and potential research directions to exploit them. Finally, analytical tools and frameworks for performance optimizations are presented

    An all-in-one dual band blade antenna for ads-b and 5g communications in uav assisted wireless networks

    This paper is aimed at the characterization and manufacturing of an SMA coaxial fed com-pact blade antenna with dual frequency characteristics for broadband applications on board of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs). This antenna is linearly polarized, and it combines the benefits of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and 5th Generation (5G) communications in one single element, covering both the 1.030–1.090 GHz and the 3.4–3.8 GHz bands thanks to a bent side and a ‘C’ shaped slot within the radiation element. Starting from the simulation outcomes on an ideal ground plane, the results are here extended to a bent ground plane and on two UAV com-mercial CAD models. Details of manufacturing of the antenna in both aluminium and FR-4 substrate materials are presented. The comparison between measurements and simulations is discussed in terms of return loss, bandwidth, gain, and radiation pattern. Results show an antenna with a low profile and a simple structure that can be employed in various wideband communication systems, suiting future UAV assisted 5G networks while being perfectly compliant with forthcoming ADS-B based Detect-And-Avoid (DAA) technologies in Unmanned Aerial Traffic Management (UTM)
