    Development, Analysis, and Control of Series Elastic Actuator-Driven Robot Leg

    The mass-spring system-like behavior is a powerful analysis tool to simplify human running/locomotion and is also known as the Spring Loaded Inverted Pendulum (SLIP) model. Beyond being just an analysis tool, the SLIP model is utilized as a template for implementing human-like locomotion by using the articulated robot. Since the dynamics of the articulated robot exhibits complicated behavior when projected into the operational space of the SLIP template, various considerations are required, from the robot’s mechanical design to its control and analysis. Hence, the required technologies are the realization of pure mass-spring behavior during the interaction with the ground and the robust position control capability in the operational space of the robot. This paper develops a robot leg driven by the Series Elastic Actuator (SEA), which is a suitable actuator system for interacting with the environment, such as the ground. A robust hybrid control method is developed for the SEA-driven robot leg to achieve the required technologies. Furthermore, the developed robot leg has biarticular coordination, which is a human-inspired design that can effectively transmit the actuator torque to the operational space. This paper also employs Rotating Workspace (RW), which specializes in the control of the biarticulated robots.     Design and Evaluation of the LOPES Exoskeleton Robot for Interactive Gait Rehabilitation

    This paper introduces a newly developed gait rehabilitation device. The device, called LOPES, combines a freely translatable and 2-D-actuated pelvis segment with a leg exoskeleton containing three actuated rotational joints: two at the hip and one at the knee. The joints are impedance controlled to allow bidirectional mechanical interaction between the robot and the training subject. Evaluation measurements show that the device allows both a "pa- tient-in-charge" and "robot-in-charge" mode, in which the robot is controlled either to follow or to guide a patient, respectively. Electromyography (EMG) measurements (one subject) on eight important leg muscles, show that free walking in the device strongly resembles free treadmill walking; an indication that the device can offer task-specific gait training. The possibilities and limitations to using the device as gait measurement tool are also shown at the moment position measurements are not accurate enough for inverse-dynamical gait analysis

    Design of an Elastic Actuation System for a Gait-Assistive Active Orthosis for Incomplete Spinal Cord Injured Subjects

    A spinal cord injury severely reduces the quality of life of affected people. Following the injury, limitations of the ability to move may occur due to the disruption of the motor and sensory functions of the nervous system depending on the severity of the lesion. An active stance-control knee-ankle-foot orthosis was developed and tested in earlier works to aid incomplete SCI subjects by increasing their mobility and independence. This thesis aims at the incorporation of elastic actuation into the active orthosis to utilise advantages of the compliant system regarding efficiency and human-robot interaction as well as the reproduction of the phyisological compliance of the human joints. Therefore, a model-based procedure is adapted to the design of an elastic actuation system for a gait-assisitve active orthosis. A determination of the optimal structure and parameters is undertaken via optimisation of models representing compliant actuators with increasing level of detail. The minimisation of the energy calculated from the positive amount of power or from the absolute power of the actuator generating one human-like gait cycle yields an optimal series stiffness, which is similar to the physiological stiffness of the human knee during the stance phase. Including efficiency factors for components, especially the consideration of the electric model of an electric motor yields additional information. A human-like gait cycle contains high torque and low velocities in the stance phase and lower torque combined with high velocities during the swing. Hence, the efficiency of an electric motor with a gear unit is only high in one of the phases. This yields a conceptual design of a series elastic actuator with locking of the actuator position during the stance phase. The locked position combined with the series compliance allows a reproduction of the characteristics of the human gait cycle during the stance phase. Unlocking the actuator position for the swing phase enables the selection of an optimal gear ratio to maximise the recuperable energy. To evaluate the developed concept, a laboratory specimen based on an electric motor, a harmonic drive gearbox, a torsional series spring and an electromagnetic brake is designed and appropriate components are selected. A control strategy, based on impedance control, is investigated and extended with a finite state machine to activate the locking mechanism. The control scheme and the laboratory specimen are implemented at a test bench, modelling the foot and shank as a pendulum articulated at the knee. An identification of parameters yields high and nonlinear friction as a problem of the system, which reduces the energy efficiency of the system and requires appropriate compensation. A comparison between direct and elastic actuation shows similar results for both systems at the test bench, showing that the increased complexity due to the second degree of freedom and the elastic behaviour of the actuator is treated properly. The final proof of concept requires the implementation at the active orthosis to emulate uncertainties and variations occurring during the human gait

    A Dynamics and Stability Framework for Avian Jumping Take-off

    Jumping take-off in birds is an explosive behaviour with the goal of providing a rapid transition from ground to airborne locomotion. An effective jump is predicated on the need to maintain dynamic stability through the acceleration phase. The present study concerns understanding how birds retain control of body attitude and trajectory during take-off. Cursory observation suggests that stability is achieved with relatively little cost. However, analysis of the problem shows that the stability margins during jumping are actually very small and that stability considerations play a significant role in selection of appropriate jumping kinematics. We use theoretical models to understand stability in prehensile take-off (from a perch) and also in non-prehensile take-off (from the ground). The primary instability is tipping, defined as rotation of the centre of gravity about the ground contact point. Tipping occurs when the centre of pressure falls outside the functional foot. A contribution of the paper is the development of graphical tipping stability margins for both centre of gravity location and acceleration angle. We show that the nose-up angular acceleration extends stability bounds forward and is hence helpful in achieving shallow take-offs. The stability margins are used to interrogate simulated take-offs of real birds using published experimental kinematic data from a guinea fowl (ground take-off) and a diamond dove (perch take-off). For the guinea fowl the initial part of the jump is stable, however simulations exhibit a stuttering instability not observed experimentally that is probably due to absence of compliance in the idealised joints.     Design and Control of Compliant Actuation Topologies for Energy-Efficient Articulated Robots

    Considerable advances have been made in the field of robotic actuation in recent years. At the heart of this has been increased use of compliance. Arguably the most common approach is that of Series-Elastic Actuation (SEA), and SEAs have evolved to become the core component of many articulated robots. Another approach is integration of compliance in parallel to the main actuation, referred to as Parallel- Elastic Actuation (PEA). A wide variety of such systems has been proposed. While both approaches have demonstrated significant potential benefits, a number of key challenges remain with regards to the design and control of such actuators. This thesis addresses some of the challenges that exist in design and control of compliant actuation systems. First, it investigates the design, dynamics, and control of SEAs as the core components of next-generation robots. We consider the influence of selected physical stiffness on torque controllability and backdrivability, and propose an optimality criterion for impedance rendering. Furthermore, we consider disturbance observers for robust torque control. Simulation studies and experimental data validate the analyses. Secondly, this work investigates augmentation of articulated robots with adjustable parallel compliance and multi-articulated actuation for increased energy efficiency. Particularly, design optimisation of parallel compliance topologies with adjustable pretension is proposed, including multi-articulated arrangements. Novel control strategies are developed for such systems.     Design and Implement Towards Enhanced Physical Interactive Performance Robot Bodies

    In this thesis, it will introduce the design principle and implement details towards enhanced physical interactive performance robot bodies, which are more specically focused on under actuated principle robotic hands and articulated leg robots. Since they both signicantly function as the physical interactive robot bodies against external environment, while their current performance can hardly satisfy the requirement of undertaking missions in real application. Regarding to the enhanced physical interactive performances, my work will emphasis on the three following specific functionalities, high energy efficiency, high strength and physical sturdiness in both robotics actuation and mechanism. For achieving the aforementioned targets, multiple design methods have been applied, rstly the elastic energy storage elements and compliant actuation have been adopted in legged robots as Asymmetrical Compliant Actuation (ACA), implemented for not only single joint but also multiple joints as mono and biarticulation congurations in order to achieve higher energy effciency motion. Secondly the under actuated principle and modular nger design concept have been utilized on the development of robotic hands for enhancing the grasping strength and physical sturdiness meanwhile maintaining the manipulation dexterity. Lastly, a novel high payload active tuning Parallel Elastic Actuation (PEA) and Series Elastic Actuation (SEA) have been adopted on legged robots for augmenting energy eciency and physical sturdiness.     Understanding and Improving Locomotion: The Simultaneous Optimization of Motion and Morphology in Legged Robots

    There exist many open design questions in the field of legged robotics. Should leg extension and retraction occur with a knee or a prismatic joint? Will adding a compliant ankle lead to improved energetics compared to a point foot? Should quadrupeds have a flexible or a rigid spine? Should elastic elements in the actuation be placed in parallel or in series with the motors? Though these questions may seem basic, they are fundamentally difficult to approach. A robot with either discrete choice will likely need very different components and use very different motion to perform at its best. To make a fair comparison between two design variations, roboticists need to ask, is the best version of a robot with a discrete morphological variation better than the best version of a robot with the other variation? In this dissertation, I propose to answer these type of questions using an optimization based approach. Using numerical algorithms, I let a computer determine the best possible motion and best set of parameters for each design variation in order to be able to compare the best instance of each variation against each other. I developed and implemented that methodology to explore three primary robotic design questions. In the first, I asked if parallel or series elastic actuation is the more energetically economical choice for a legged robot. Looking at a variety of force and energy based cost functions, I mapped the optimal motion cost landscape as a function of configurable parameters in the hoppers. In the best case, the series configuration was more economical for an energy based cost function, and the parallel configuration was better for a force based cost function. I then took this work a step further and included the configurable parameters directly within the optimization on a model with gear friction. I found, for the most realistic cost function, the electrical work, that series was the better choice when the majority of the transmission was handled by a low-friction rotary-to-linear transmission. In the second design question, I extended this analysis to a two-dimensional monoped moving at a forward velocity with either parallel or series elastic actuation at the hip and leg. In general it was best to have a parallel elastic actuator at the hip, and a series elastic actuator at the leg. In the third design question, I asked if there is an energetic benefit to having an articulated spinal joint instead of a rigid spinal joint in a quadrupedal legged robot. I found that the answer was gait dependent. For symmetrical gaits, such as walking and trotting, the rigid and articulated spine models have similar energetic economy. For asymmetrical gaits, such as bounding and galloping, the articulated spine led to significant energy savings at high speeds. The combination of the above studies readily presents a methodology for simultaneously optimizing for motion and morphology in legged robots. Aside from giving insight into these specific design questions, the technique can also be extended to a variety of other design questions.
