    A Model-Based Development and Verification Framework for Distributed System-on-Chip Architecture

    The capabilities and thus, design complexity of VLSI-based embedded systems have increased tremendously in recent years, riding the wave of Moore’s law. The time-to-market requirements are also shrinking, imposing challenges to the designers, which in turn, seek to adopt new design methods to increase their productivity. As an answer to these new pressures, modern day systems have moved towards on-chip multiprocessing technologies. New architectures have emerged in on-chip multiprocessing in order to utilize the tremendous advances of fabrication technology. Platform-based design is a possible solution in addressing these challenges. The principle behind the approach is to separate the functionality of an application from the organization and communication architecture of hardware platform at several levels of abstraction. The existing design methodologies pertaining to platform-based design approach don’t provide full automation at every level of the design processes, and sometimes, the co-design of platform-based systems lead to sub-optimal systems. In addition, the design productivity gap in multiprocessor systems remain a key challenge due to existing design methodologies. This thesis addresses the aforementioned challenges and discusses the creation of a development framework for a platform-based system design, in the context of the SegBus platform - a distributed communication architecture. This research aims to provide automated procedures for platform design and application mapping. Structural verification support is also featured thus ensuring correct-by-design platforms. The solution is based on a model-based process. Both the platform and the application are modeled using the Unified Modeling Language. This thesis develops a Domain Specific Language to support platform modeling based on a corresponding UML profile. Object Constraint Language constraints are used to support structurally correct platform construction. An emulator is thus introduced to allow as much as possible accurate performance estimation of the solution, at high abstraction levels. VHDL code is automatically generated, in the form of “snippets” to be employed in the arbiter modules of the platform, as required by the application.     Semantic programming model-based design

    For a generic flexible efficient array antenna receiver platform a hierarchical tiled architecture has been proposed, giving a heterogeneous multi-processor system-on-chip (MPSoC), multiple chips on a board (MCoB) and multiple boards in a system (MBiS). A wide range of MPSoCs are predicted to be used in the near future but how to efficiently apply these designs remains an issue. We will advocate a model-based design approach and propose a single semantic (programming) model for representing the specification, design and implementation and allowing for verification, simulation, architecture definition and design space exploration.\ud \ud A single model for specification, (formal or functional) verification, simulation and programming an MPSoC has obvious as well as some less obvious advantages. It allows for model-based design down to the implementation, especially for hierarchical MPSoC architectures. Partitioning and mapping of the functionality to an architecture is commonly done manually. Using the proposed approach the feasibility of (partly) automated design space exploration is discussed for determining either a partitioning and mapping for a given architecture or an optimal architecture based on set constraints.\ud \ud The proposed hierarchical tiled architecture provides a flexible reconfigurable solution, however partitioning, mapping, modeling and programming such systems remains an issue. The proposed approach tackles these problems at a higher conceptual level, thereby exploiting the inherent composability and parallelism available in the formalism. Design space explorations is facilitated by allowing transformations between different partitionings and mappings. However, the generic applicability and limitations of this approach will need to be researched further.\ud \u

    From MARTE to Reconfigurable NoCs: A model driven design methodology

    Due to the continuous exponential rise in SoC's design complexity, there is a critical need to find new seamless methodologies and tools to handle the SoC co-design aspects. We address this issue and propose a novel SoC co-design methodology based on Model Driven Engineering and the MARTE (Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time and Embedded Systems) standard proposed by Object Management Group, to raise the design abstraction levels. Extensions of this standard have enabled us to move from high level specifications to execution platforms such as reconfigurable FPGAs. In this paper, we present a high level modeling approach that targets modern Network on Chips systems. The overall objective: to perform system modeling at a high abstraction level expressed in Unified Modeling Language (UML); and afterwards, transform these high level models into detailed enriched lower level models in order to automatically generate the necessary code for final FPGA synthesis

    High level modeling of Partially Dynamically Reconfigurable FPGAs based on MDE and MARTE

    International audienceSystem-on-Chip (SoC) architectures are becoming the preferred solution for implementing modern embedded systems. However their design complexity continues to augment due to the increase in integrated hardware resources requiring new design methodologies and tools. In this paper we present a novel SoC co-design methodology based on aModel Driven Engineering framework while utilizing the MARTE (Modeling and Analysis of Real-time and Embedded Systems) standard. This methodology permits us to model fine grain reconfigurable architectures such as FPGAs and allows to extend the standard for integrating new features such as Partial Dynamic Reconfiguration supported by modern FPGAs. The overall objective is to carry out modeling at a high abstraction level expressed in a graphical language like UML (Unified Modeling Language) and afterwards transformations of these models, automatically generate the necessary specifications required for FPGA implementation

    Intelligent Embedded Software: New Perspectives and Challenges

    Intelligent embedded systems (IES) represent a novel and promising generation of embedded systems (ES). IES have the capacity of reasoning about their external environments and adapt their behavior accordingly. Such systems are situated in the intersection of two different branches that are the embedded computing and the intelligent computing. On the other hand, intelligent embedded software (IESo) is becoming a large part of the engineering cost of intelligent embedded systems. IESo can include some artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems such as expert systems, neural networks and other sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) models to guarantee some important characteristics such as self-learning, self-optimizing and self-repairing. Despite the widespread of such systems, some design challenging issues are arising. Designing a resource-constrained software and at the same time intelligent is not a trivial task especially in a real-time context. To deal with this dilemma, embedded system researchers have profited from the progress in semiconductor technology to develop specific hardware to support well AI models and render the integration of AI with the embedded world a reality

    Joint Algorithm Developing and System-Level Design: Case Study on Video Encoding

    Abstract. System-Level Design Environments (SLDEs) are often utilized for tackling the design complexity of modern embedded systems. SLDEs typically start with a specification capturing core algorithms. Algorithm development itself largely occurs in Algorithm Design Environments (ADE) with little or no hardware concern. Currently, algorithm and system design environments are disjoint; system level specifications are manually implemented which leads to the specification gap. In this paper, we bridge algorithm and system design environments creating a unified design flow facilitating algorithm and system co-design. It enables algorithm realizations over heterogeneous platforms, while still tuning the algorithm according to platform needs. Our design flow starts with algorithm design in Simulink, out of which a System Level Design Language (SLDL)-based specification is synthesized. This specification then is used for design space exploration across heterogeneous target platforms and abstraction levels, and, after identifying a suitable platform, synthesized to HW/SW implementations. It realizes a unified development cycle across algorithm modeling and system-level design with quick responses to design decisions on algorithm-, specification-and system exploration level. It empowers the designer to combine analysis results across environments, apply cross layer optimizations, which will yield an overall optimized design through rapid design iterations. We demonstrate the benefits on a MJPEG video encoder case study, showing early computation/communication estimation and rapid prototyping from Simulink models. Results from Virtual Platform performance analysis enable the algorithm designer to improve model structure to better match the heterogeneous platform in an efficient and fast design cycle. Through applying our unified design flow, an improved HW/SW is found yielding 50% performance gain compared to a pure software solution
