    Project quality management in virtual environments : a primer

    The rise of geographically dispersed project teams enabled by technology has made project quality management a significant challenge for organizations. This paper uses findings from a project on geographically dispersed, cooperating SMEs in the building trade, to explore whether concepts and artefacts from the Rational Unified Process&reg; (RUP&reg;) software development approach could be adapted and used to better manage quality in virtual projects. Our future research aims to explore the use of RUP artefacts in a virtual environment and their impact onproject management and quality.<br /

It has been estimated that these products consumed 99% of the worldwide production of microprocessors. I In general, "Embedded system" means a computer system sitting inside a product other than a computer to make the product more flexible and controllable. For example, a modem washing machine has a control software system to execute different "washing programs" for different types of clothes. Embedded systems usually have strict requirements on response time, and the response must be generated within a finite and specified period, though depending on the situation, the time could be within a few milliseconds or a few seconds. Because of the special requirement on response time, embedded systems are sometimes called real-time systems. Embedded systems can be divided into two categories: hard and soft, according to the degree of required "timeliness" 2 . A hard embedded system is stringent on that the response must occur within a specified timeline. Typical examples are flight-control systems and missile control systems. A soft embedded system is less strict: response time is important but the system still can function properly given occasionally missed deadline. Examples are mobile phones, printers, and medical devices. This paper is only concerned with development of the soft-embedded systems, and hence the term "embedded systems" in the paper means "soft embedded systems".by Wei Hu.S.M

    A Use-Case Model for a Knowledge Management System to Facilitate Disaster Relief Operations

    There are numerous disaster relief agencies poised to respond to disasters; however, coordinating the activities of these diverse and dispersed entities and capitalizing on their knowledge assets can be a challenge. All of these agencies are dedicated to serving survivors of disasters, but they at times lack the coordination necessary to respond efficiently. The Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) is an umbrella organization of existing agencies dedicated to working closely with other organizations to improve service and minimize duplication during disaster operations. To better cope with disasters, the Virginia VOAD needs to develop knowledge management strategies to coordinate its resources. The goal of this study was to design a use-case model of a web-based knowledge management system to support state and local level disaster recovery planning and operations in the aftermath of a disaster. The focus of this study was to support the disaster field office (DFO) operations. The use-case methodology outlined in the Rational Unified Process and supported by the Unified Modeling Language notation provided the means of systematically discovering and documenting system requirements. The resulting model provides a framework for a knowledge management system that has been adapted to the disaster recovery domain. Evaluation and validation of the model has shown this to be a viable concept. It is anticipated that this model could serve as the basis for developing a prototype knowledge management system that may also be adapted to similar state and local VOAD chapters around the country
