    The Art of Becoming

This study aims to bring attention to the ways in which Black womanhood is curated in the digital landscape by both Black women and non-Black women. Representations of Black women, often coded as negative, circulate mainstream media today, but when the same representations are taken up by non-Black woman bodies, they are regarded differently as unique, profitable, and desirable. In this context, Black womanhood is described as a specific performance assembled through cultural references popularized by Black women. To explore this topic, I analyze two Instagram accounts through visual analysis. The results show how my own curation of my image on Instagram account as a Black woman and Emma Hallberg’s, a white Swedish woman accused of “Blackfishing,” curation of her Instagram account are shaped by the performance of Black womanhood in digital space

    Temporary Contemporary

This is the first book that documents and reflects on an aspect of the Temporary Contemporary initiative. Launching in 2018, Temporary Contemporary is a collaboration between the School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield and Kirklees Council. This collaboration, in the form of an action research project, has sought to reflect on the efficacy, meanings and wider contribution of cultural activity in Huddersfield town and beyond. It is one small part of a bigger project about the future cultural heart of Huddersfield. The title Creating Vibrant Spaces to Support the Conditions for Creative and Cultural Activity refers to the aims of Temporary Contemporary in its entirety. The initiative achieves these aims through populating former retail spaces in the town with exhibitions and events, fostering partnerships and creating networking opportunities for cultural and creative producers, repurposing fine historic buildings and making connections with rich cultural traditions in the town including music, theatre and textiles. This book provides one contribution to the many discussions about the role of culture in towns and cities. The insights of our collaborative research may be of interest and use to policy makers, academics, artists, curators and anyone else with a concern about the cultural and social future of towns and cities in the UK and beyond

Arts practice MeYouAndUs will produce TILO, a hybrid display system for cultural venues. It uses digital screens situated in the public spaces of a venue, combined with live feeds and sensors to display engaging, interactive and personalised content. TILO aims to create a dialogue between the arts organisation, the building and its visitors, and will allow artists to carry out their own interventions. The system will be piloted at FACT, the popular cross-arts venue in Liverpool

Anticipating plausible futures for innovative experimental ecosystems using foresight approach. Case: Design Factory

    Get PDF
Change-makers are visionaries who wish to bring change in their respective fields. Design Factory at Aalto University, as an innovative experimental ecosystem with inter-disciplinary principles and new teaching methodologies has been successful and at the forefront in educating the students to be change-makers. The students learn skills, knowledge and are provided with a safe environment that guides them to become a change-maker in their respective fields such as social organizations, entrepreneurship, and careers in start-up or industry. Educating the students to be change-makers will evolve with future; the aim of the study is to holistically anticipate plausible futures for innovative experimental ecosystems utilizing foresight approach. The focus of the study is on Design Factory ways of working, spaces, and teaching methods which will support students in learning by year 20x6{x = 2, 3}. This study is about drawing virtual lines that connect the trends, future drivers, visions, and scenarios, using a contemporary approach that fuses qualitative and quantitative methods. The research on future trends and drivers were performed through semi structured interviews and environmental scanning. The drivers are evaluated through an online survey based on principles of the Delphi method. Further, the drivers are used to build mini scenarios which are further evaluated with the Design Factory stakeholders through a workshop. The results from the study are six future scenarios for the Aalto Design Factory. These results are expected to further foster or trigger new research and development experiments, directions on building radical environments, new teaching methods and ways of working

Expanded urban media: from discretized social collages to corrugated social brain

Big data, the mobile Internet, social media and the Internet of things (IOT) generate more information than ever but the aggregation of social intelligence remains far from realising it’s potential. Two exemplary works, mediated_moments and plasma_flow, exhibited at Beijing’s China Millennium Monument Museum of Digital Arts in 2012 model the scalable potential of urban media to weave itself into the city’s social fabric, mapping and visualizing individuals’ thinking/intelligence onto a mixed-reality urban canvas

Beyond Green: The Arts as a Catalyst for Sustainability

    Get PDF
The creative sector has played a significant role in efforts to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change and encourage sustainable social, economic, and environmental practices worldwide. Many artists and cultural organizations have embarked on remarkable projects that make us reflect on our behaviors, our carbon footprints, and the claims of infinite growth based on finite resources. Sometimes treading a fine line between arts and advocacy, they have sparked extraordinary collaborations that reveal new ways of living together on a shared planet. The 'art of the possible' will become even more relevant as 2016 dawns - bringing the challenge of how to implement the Sustainable Development Goals and the Climate Change Agreement adopted at the end of 2015. Yet with negotiations overshadowed by scientific controversy, political polemic and geographic polarization, individuals can easily lose faith in their own ability to shape change beyond the hyperlocal level. Against this challenging backdrop, could the arts and creative practice become a particle accelerator - to shift mindsets, embrace new ways of sharing space and resources, and catalyze more creative leadership in the public and private spheres? The goal of this Salzburg Global Seminar session was to build on path-breaking cultural initiatives to advance international and cross-sectoral links between existing arts and sustainability activities around the world, encourage bolder awareness-raising efforts, and recommend strategic approaches for making innovative grassroots to scale for greater, longer-term impact

The World as an Interface: Exploring the Ethical Challenges of the Emerging Metaverse

    Get PDF
Mixed reality is emerging as the next phase of personal computing. Once Apple Glass is released augmented and mixed reality will go mainstream and the impact on our behaviour will be as dramatic as when the iPhone was released. In parallel, what used to be 2D webpages are becoming 3D worlds, collectively forming a meta universe of virtual or mixed reality domains -the ‘Metaverse’. Mixed reality is precisely where the best affordances of the digital and analogue worlds should work together to create entirely new interactive learning, social and economic opportunities. In this paper we reflect on how the physical world will itself become an interface making reality even more machine-readable, click-able, and searchable. We further propose how society will need to ensure that the appropriate boundary management is in place to allow us as co-creators of the metaverse to protect our ethical rights of privacy, integrity, and autonomy
