    Field Utilization and Analysis of AIS 128-channel Imagery Using Microcomputers: Application to Yerington, Nevada Field Area

    Geologists in exploration need to be able to determine the mineral composition of a given outcrop, and then proceed to another in order to carry out the process of geologic mapping. Since April 1984 researchers have been developing a portable microcomputer-based imaging system (with a grey-scale of 16 shades of amber), which were demonstrated during the November 1984 GSA field trip in the field at Yerington, NV. A color-version of the same technology was recently demonstrated. The portable computer selected is a COLBY 10-Megabyte, hard disk-equipped repackaged-IBM/XT, which operates on either 110/220 VAC or on 12VDC from the cigarette lighter in a field vehicle. A COMPAQ PLUS or an IBM Portable will also work on modified software. The underlying concept is that the atmospheric transmission and surface albedo/slope terms are multiplicative, relating the spectral irradiance to the spectral color of the surface materials. Thus, the spectral color of a pixel remains after averaged log-albedo and log-irradiance have been estimated. All these steps can be carried out on the COLBY microcomputer, using 80 image lines of the 128-channel, 12-bit imagery. Results are shown for such an 80-line segment, showing the identification of an O-H bearing mineral group (of slightly varying specific characters) on the flight line

    Edge Impulse: An MLOps Platform for Tiny Machine Learning

    Edge Impulse is a cloud-based machine learning operations (MLOps) platform for developing embedded and edge ML (TinyML) systems that can be deployed to a wide range of hardware targets. Current TinyML workflows are plagued by fragmented software stacks and heterogeneous deployment hardware, making ML model optimizations difficult and unportable. We present Edge Impulse, a practical MLOps platform for developing TinyML systems at scale. Edge Impulse addresses these challenges and streamlines the TinyML design cycle by supporting various software and hardware optimizations to create an extensible and portable software stack for a multitude of embedded systems.     DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF PORTABLE PSYCHOACOUSTIC TESTING SYSTEMS

    There is an increasing demand for developing portable psychoacoustic testing systems to evaluate the hearing abilities of people. In this thesis, the design, development, and evaluation of portable, flexible, and versatile wired and wireless psychoacoustic testing systems will be presented. The design of the wired system utilizes a USB audio I/O controller chip for communicating with the application software on the host through a USB cable. The wireless system includes two units: a transmitter and a receiver. 2.4GHz RF transceiver chips are employed for wireless communication. Double-side PCBs populated with 0603 SMD were designed and fabricated. To go along with the hardware, software was developed on a handheld device to control and execute several psychoacoustic tests and to log subjective data. Objective measurements and small scale clinical trials were undertaken to test the efficiency of the proposed portable systems

    e-Health for Rural Areas in Developing Countries: Lessons from the Sebokeng Experience

    We report the experience gained in an e-Health project in the Gauteng province, in South Africa. A Proof-of-Concept of the project has been already installed in 3 clinics in the Sebokeng township. The project is now going to be applied to 300 clinics in the whole province. This extension of the Proof-of-Concept can however give rise to security aws because of the inclusion of rural areas with unreliable Internet connection. We address this problem and propose a safe solution
