    Towards Designing AI-Enabled Adaptive Learning Systems

    Paper I, III, IV and V are not available as a part of the dissertation due to the copyright.Among the many innovations driven by artificial intelligence (AI) are more advanced learning systems known as AI-enabled adaptive learning systems (AI-ALS). AI-ALS are platforms that adapt to the learning strategies of students by modifying the order and difficulty level of learning tasks based on the abilities of students. These systems support adaptive learning, which is the personalization of learning for students in a learning system, such that the system can deal with individual differences in aptitude. AI-ALS are gaining traction due to their ability to deliver learning content and adapt to individual student needs. While the potential and importance of such systems have been well documented, the actual implementation of AI-ALS and other AI-based learning systems in real-world teaching and learning settings has not reached the effectiveness envisaged on the level of theory. Moreover, AI-ALS lack transferable insights and codification of knowledge on their design and development. The reason for this is that many previous studies were experimental.     Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

    Creating a performance-oriented e-learning environment: A design science approach

    E-learning is now being used by many organizations as an approach for enhancing the skills of knowledge workers. However, most applications have performed poorly in motivating employee learning, being perceived as less effective due to a lack of alignment of learning with work performance. To help solve this problem, we developed a performance-oriented approach using design science research methods. It uses performance measurement to clarify organizational goals and individual learning needs and links them to e-learning applications. The key concept lies in a Key Performance Indicator model, where organizational mission and vision are translated into a set of targets that drive learning towards a goal of improving work performance. We explored the mechanisms needed to utilize our approach and examined the necessary conceptual framework and implementation details. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, a prototype workplace e-learning system was developed and used to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.     Mobile Games for Learning:A Pattern-Based Approach

    The core concern of this thesis is the design of mobile games for learning. The conditions and requirements that are vital in order to make mobile games suitable and effective for learning environments are investigated. The base for exploration is the pattern approach as an established form of templates that provide solutions for recurrent problems. Building on this acknowledged form of exchanging and re-using knowledge, patterns for game design are used to classify the many gameplay rules and mechanisms in existence. This research draws upon pattern descriptions to analyze learning game concepts and to abstract possible relationships between gameplay patterns and learning outcomes. The linkages that surface are the starting bases for a series of game design concepts and their implementations are subsequently evaluated with regard to learning outcomes. The findings and resulting knowledge from this research is made accessible by way of implications and recommendations for future design decisions

    Building University Relationships: A Holistic Approach to Student Success in Online Learning Environments

    Online learning in the higher education sector has grown exponentially over the past 15 years. Whereas online learning was once a viable alternative for the nontraditional adult student, enrollment trends now show an influx in traditional students opting for virtual education opportunities especially in the last three years during the COVID-19 pandemic. While there has been exponential growth in online learning, the rates of attrition have also significantly increased, making it difficult for institutions to retain their online students. This qualitative narrative inquiry study will explore the impact of authentic relationships on student success, engagement, and overall persistence in online learning environments. The research used in this review is timely and relevant for the current student climate that continues to reflect increases in online learning as well as enrollment of both traditional and nontraditional students who have conflicting priorities (work, personal life, and scholarly pursuits). Data compiled here will seek to provide details that support a teacher culture while considering authentic engagement, collective ownership, communication, and human centeredness as avenues for increased student success. It will explore internal and external factors contributing to and/or hindering student success and seek to identify effective and innovative student service practices that foster increased engagement and retention in online student learning environments.
