Multi-Stop Routing Optimization: A Genetic Algorithm Approach

In this research, we investigate and propose new operators to improve Genetic Algorithm’s performance to solve the multi-stop routing problem. In a multi-stop route, a user starts at point x, visits all destinations exactly once, and then return to the same starting point. In this thesis, we are interested in two types of this problem. The first type is when the distance among destinations is fixed. In this case, it is called static traveling salesman problem. The second type is when the cost among destinations is affected by traffic congestion. Thus, the time among destinations changes during the day. In this case, it is called time-dependent traveling salesman problem. This research proposes new improvements on genetic algorithm to solve each of these two optimization problems. First, the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the most important and attractive combinatorial optimization problems. There are many meta-heuristic algorithms that can solve this problem. In this paper, we use a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to solve it. GA uses different operators: selection, crossover, and mutation. Sequential Constructive Crossover (SCX) and Bidirectional Circular Constructive Crossover (BCSCX) are efficient to solve TSP. Here, we propose a modification to these crossovers. The experimental results show that our proposed adjustment is superior to SCX and BCSCX as well as to other conventional crossovers (e.g. Order Crossover (OX), Cycle Crossover (CX), and Partially Mapped Crossover (PMX)) in term of solution quality and convergence speed. Furthermore, the GA solver, that is improved by applying inexpensive local search operators, can produce solutions that have much better quality within reasonable computational time. Second, the Time-Dependent Traveling Salesman Problem (TDTSP) is an interesting problem and has an impact on real-life applications such as a delivery system. In this problem, time among destinations fluctuates during the day due to traffic, weather, accidents, or other events. Thus, it is important to recommend a tour that can save driver’s time and resources. In this research, we propose a Multi-Population Genetic Algorithm (MGA) where each population has different crossovers. We compare the proposed MG against Single-Population Genetic Algorithm (SGA) in terms of tour time solution quality. Our finding is that MGA outperforms SGA. Our method is tested against real-world traffic data [1] where there are 200 different instances with different numbers of destinations. For all tested instances, MGA is superior on average by at least 10% (for instances with size less than 50) and 20% (for instances of size 50) better tour time solution compared to SGA with OX and SGA with PMX operators, and at least 4% better tour time compared toga with SCX operator

    Traveling Salesman Problem

The idea behind TSP was conceived by Austrian mathematician Karl Menger in mid 1930s who invited the research community to consider a problem from the everyday life from a mathematical point of view. A traveling salesman has to visit exactly once each one of a list of m cities and then return to the home city. He knows the cost of traveling from any city i to any other city j. Thus, which is the tour of least possible cost the salesman can take? In this book the problem of finding algorithmic technique leading to good/optimal solutions for TSP (or for some other strictly related problems) is considered. TSP is a very attractive problem for the research community because it arises as a natural subproblem in many applications concerning the every day life. Indeed, each application, in which an optimal ordering of a number of items has to be chosen in a way that the total cost of a solution is determined by adding up the costs arising from two successively items, can be modelled as a TSP instance. Thus, studying TSP can never be considered as an abstract research with no real importance

This thesis will use the traveling salesman problem (TSP) as a tool to help present and investigate several new techniques that improve the overall performance of genetic algorithms (GA). Improvements include a new parent selection algorithm, harem select, that outperforms all other parent selection algorithms tested, some by up to 600%. Other techniques investigated include population seeding, random restart, heuristic crossovers, and hybrid genetic algorithms, all of which posted improvements in the range of 1% up to 1100%. Also studied will be a new algorithm, GRASP, that is just starting to enjoy a lot of interest in the research community and will also been applied to the traveling salesman problem (TSP). Given very little time to run, relative to other popular metaheuristic algorithms, GRASP was able to come within 5% of optimal on several of the TSPLIB maps used for testing. Both the GA and the GRASP algorithms will be compared with commonly used metaheuristic algorithms such as simulated annealing (SA) and reactive tabu search (RTS) as well as a simple neighborhood search - greedy search

Developing Programming Tools to Handle Traveling Salesman Problem by the Three Object-Oriented Languages

The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is one of the most famous problems. Many applications and programming tools have been developed to handle TSP. However, it seems to be essential to provide easy programming tools according to state-of-theart algorithms. Therefore, we have collected and programmed new easy tools by the three object-oriented languages. In this paper, we present ADT (abstract data type) of developed tools at first; then we analyze their performance by experiments. We also design a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) by developed tools. Experimental results show that the proposed HGA is comparable with the recent state-of-the-art applications

[Extract] Population based optimization algorithms are the techniques which are in the set of the nature based optimization algorithms. The creatures and natural systems which are working and developing in nature are one of the interesting and valuable sources of inspiration for designing and inventing new systems and algorithms in different fields of science and technology. Evolutionary Computation (Eiben& Smith, 2003), Neural Networks (Haykin, 99), Time Adaptive Self-Organizing Maps (Shah-Hosseini, 2006), Ant Systems (Dorigo & Stutzle, 2004), Particle Swarm Optimization (Eberhart & Kennedy, 1995), Simulated Annealing (Kirkpatrik, 1984), Bee Colony Optimization (Teodorovic et al., 2006) and DNA Computing (Adleman, 1994) are among the problem solving techniques inspired from observing nature. In this chapter population based optimization algorithms have been introduced. Some of these algorithms were mentioned above. Other algorithms are Intelligent Water Drops (IWD) algorithm (Shah-Hosseini, 2007), Artificial Immune Systems (AIS) (Dasgupta, 1999) and Electromagnetism-like Mechanisms (EM) (Birbil & Fang, 2003). In this chapter, every section briefly introduces one of these population based optimization algorithms and applies them for solving the TSP. Also, we try to note the important points of each algorithm and every point we contribute to these algorithms has been stated. Section nine shows experimental results based on the algorithms introduced in previous sections which are implemented to solve different problems of the TSP using well-known datasets
