    General guidelines for designing bilingual low cost digital library services suitable for special library users in developing countries and the Arabic speaking world

    The World is witnessing a considerable transformation from print based-formats to elec-tronic-based formats thanks to advanced computing technology, which has a profound impact on the dissemination of nearly all previous formats of publications into digital formats on computer networks. Text, still and moving images, sound tracks, music, and almost all known formats can be stored and retrieved on computer magnetic disk. Over the last two decades, a number of special libraries and information centres in the Arab world have introduced electronic resources into their library services. Very few have implemented automated and integrated systems. Despite the im-portance of designing digital libraries not merely for accessing to or retrieval of information but rather for the provision of electronic services, hardly any special library has started the design of digital library services. Managers of special libraries and information centres in developing countries in general and in the Arab world in particular should start building their local digital libraries, as the benefit of establishing such electronic services is considerably massive and well known for expansion of re-search activities and for delivering services that satisfy the needs of targeted end-users. The aim of this paper is to provide general guideline for design of special low cost digital library providing ser-vices that are most frequently required by various categories of special library users in developing countries. This paper also aims at illustrating strategies and method approaches that can be adopted for building such projects. Seeing the importance of designing an inexpensive digital li-brary as basic principle for the design accordingly, the utilisation of today's ICTs and freely avail-able open sources software is the right path for accomplishing such goal. The paper intends to de-scribe the phases and stages required for building such projects from scratch. It also aims at high-lighting the barriers and obstacles facing Arabic content and how could such problems overcome

    Open mentor: Supporting tutors with their feedback to students

    Assessment is one of the major challenges for higher education today. This is partly because it traditionally squares the desire for improved constructivist learning against the demand for institutional reliability and accountability. The call for a pedagogically-driven model for e-Assessment was acknowledged as part of a vision for teaching and learning in 2014 (Whitelock and Brasher 2006). Experts believe that such a model will allow students in Higher Education to take more control of their learning and hence become more reflective. These are indeed laudable aims but how can they be implemented in practice? One of the problems with tutor feedback to students is that a balanced combination of socio-emotive and cognitive support is required from the teaching staff, and the feedback needs to be relevant to the assigned grade. Is it possible to capitalise on technology to build training systems for tutors in Higher Education, that will support them with their feedback to students, and which will encourage their students to become more reflective learners

    Adversarial-Playground: A Visualization Suite Showing How Adversarial Examples Fool Deep Learning

    Recent studies have shown that attackers can force deep learning models to misclassify so-called "adversarial examples": maliciously generated images formed by making imperceptible modifications to pixel values. With growing interest in deep learning for security applications, it is important for security experts and users of machine learning to recognize how learning systems may be attacked. Due to the complex nature of deep learning, it is challenging to understand how deep models can be fooled by adversarial examples. Thus, we present a web-based visualization tool, Adversarial-Playground, to demonstrate the efficacy of common adversarial methods against a convolutional neural network (CNN) system. Adversarial-Playground is educational, modular and interactive. (1) It enables non-experts to compare examples visually and to understand why an adversarial example can fool a CNN-based image classifier. (2) It can help security experts explore more vulnerability of deep learning as a software module. (3) Building an interactive visualization is challenging in this domain due to the large feature space of image classification (generating adversarial examples is slow in general and visualizing images are costly). Through multiple novel design choices, our tool can provide fast and accurate responses to user requests. Empirically, we find that our client-server division strategy reduced the response time by an average of 1.5 seconds per sample. Our other innovation, a faster variant of JSMA evasion algorithm, empirically performed twice as fast as JSMA and yet maintains a comparable evasion rate.     Developing Educational Software: a professional tool perspective

    The selection, and use of educational software and its impact in schools are still controversial issues. In this paper we present an alternative conceptualisation of educational software based on considering the software as an instrument for teachers’ professional performance. We review previous work in the areas of the design, development and evaluation of educational software and of the process of educational innovation. The review of these four areas converges to demonstrate the need for knowing and considering the context of use of educational software and for understanding users' perspectives about its roles and possibilities and hence supports a consideration a perspective on educational software which sees it as a professional tool for teachers performance of their teaching role

Results, grouped by Carnegie Classification type, indicated that larger schools were not necessarily working with more resources or more advanced levels of technology than other institutions

    Subject Specific Information Literacy Curriculum and Assessment

    Academic libraries have been changing the traditional instructional framework of library instruction teaching modules to information literacy teaching modules. National standards for information literacy increased the possibility to unify such efforts throughout the country and clarify for librarians, administrators, and faculty the desired student learning outcomes. This paper presents findings of a quantitative research study developed to provide documentation for a regional accrediting body, college administration, and faculty on the efficacy of a subject specific information literacy curriculum and assessment instrument. The study took place within a seminary and began with an initial needs assessment. A previously developed instrument, B-TILED, which had been through a rigorous process of reliability and validity testing was applied to conduct the needs assessment. The findings of the needs assessment indicated a requirement for intervention which led to the development and implementation of a formal course of instruction in information literacy. The course was developed and taught by the researcher in the fall of 2010. All incoming 1st year students were required to take, complete, and pass a one-unit class in information literacy. In order to assess the effectiveness of the course, and to provide supportive documented data to the accrediting body, pretests and posttests were administered. The instrument used, B-TILED, was the same as that used in the needs assessment study
