    TURTLE-P: a UML profile for the formal validation of critical and distributed systems

    The timed UML and RT-LOTOS environment, or TURTLE for short, extends UML class and activity diagrams with composition and temporal operators. TURTLE is a real-time UML profile with a formal semantics expressed in RT-LOTOS. Further, it is supported by a formal validation toolkit. This paper introduces TURTLE-P, an extended profile no longer restricted to the abstract modeling of distributed systems. Indeed, TURTLE-P addresses the concrete descriptions of communication architectures, including quality of service parameters (delay, jitter, etc.). This new profile enables co-design of hardware and software components with extended UML component and deployment diagrams. Properties of these diagrams can be evaluated and/or validated thanks to the formal semantics given in RT-LOTOS. The application of TURTLE-P is illustrated with a telecommunication satellite system

    Engineering model transformations with transML

The increasing complexity of systems and modelling languages has dramatically raised the complexity and size of model transformations as well. Even though many transformation languages and tools have been proposed in the last few years, most of them are directed to the implementation phase of transformation development. In this way, even though transformations should be built using sound engineering principles—just like any other kind of software—there is currently a lack of cohesive support for the other phases of the transformation development, like requirements, analysis, design and testing. In this paper, we propose a unified family of languages to cover the life cycle of transformation development enabling the engineering of transformations. Moreover, following an MDE approach, we provide tools to partially automate the progressive refinement of models between the different phases and the generation of code for several transformation implementation languages.This work has been sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation with project METEORIC (TIN2008-02081), and by the R&D program of the Community of Madrid with projects “e-Madrid" (S2009/TIC-1650).     A UML/OCL framework for the analysis of fraph transformation rules

    In this paper we present an approach for the analysis of graph transformation rules based on an intermediate OCL representation. We translate different rule semantics into OCL, together with the properties of interest (like rule applicability, conflicts or independence). The intermediate representation serves three purposes: (i) it allows the seamless integration of graph transformation rules with the MOF and OCL standards, and enables taking the meta-model and its OCL constraints (i.e. well-formedness rules) into account when verifying the correctness of the rules; (ii) it permits the interoperability of graph transformation concepts with a number of standards-based model-driven development tools; and (iii) it makes available a plethora of OCL tools to actually perform the rule analysis. This approach is especially useful to analyse the operational semantics of Domain Specific Visual Languages. We have automated these ideas by providing designers with tools for the graphical specification and analysis of graph transformation rules, including a backannotation mechanism that presents the analysis results in terms of the original language notation

    Compilation of Heterogeneous Models: Motivations and Challenges

    International audienceThe widespread use of model driven engineering in the development of software-intensive systems, including high-integrity embedded systems, gave rise to a "Tower of Babel" of modeling languages. System architects may use languages such as OMG SysML and MARTE, SAE AADL or EAST-ADL; control and command engineers tend to use graphical tools such as MathWorks Simulink/Stateflow or Esterel Technologies SCADE, or textual languages such as MathWorks Embedded Matlab; software engineers usually rely on OMG UML; and, of course, many in-house domain specific languages are equally used at any step of the development process. This heterogeneity of modeling formalisms raises several questions on the verification and code generation for systems described using heterogeneous models: How can we ensure consistency across multiple modeling views? How can we generate code, which is optimized with respect to multiple modeling views? How can we ensure model-level verification is consistent with the run-time behavior of the generated executable application?In this position paper we describe the motivations and challenges of analysis and code generation from heterogeneous models when intra-view consistency, optimization and safety are major concerns. We will then introduce Project P 2 and Hi-MoCo 3-respectively FUI and Eurostars-funded collaborative projects tackling the challenges above. This work continues and extends, in a wider context, the work carried out by the Gene-Auto 4 project [1], [2]. Hereby we will present the key elements of Project P and Hi-MoCo, in particular: (i) the philosophy for the identification of safe and minimal practical subsets of input modeling languages; (ii) the overall architecture of the toolsets, the supported analysis techniques and the target languages for code generation; and finally, (iii) the approach to cross-domain qualification for an open-source, community-driven toolset

    An Interactive System Level Simulation Environment for Systems- on-Chip

    International audienceThis article presents an interactive simulation environment for high level models intended for Design Space Exploration of Systems-On-Chip. The existing open source development environment TTool supports the MARTE compliant UML profile DIPLODOCUS and enables the designer to create, simulate and formally verify models. The goal is to obtain first performance estimations of the system intended for design while minimizing the modeling effort. The contribution outlined in this paper is an additional module providing means for controlling the simulation in real time by performing step wise execution, saving and restoring simulation states as well as animating UML models of the system. Moreover the paper elaborates on the integration of these new features into the existing framework consisting of a simulation engine on the one hand and a graphical user interface on the other hand

    (User-friendly) formal requirements verification in the context of ISO26262

    Abstract In order to achieve the highest safety integrity levels, ISO26262 recommends the use of formal methods for various verification activities, throughout the lifecycle of safety-related embedded systems for road vehicles. Since formal methods are known to be difficult to use, one of the main challenges raised by these ISO26262 requirements is to find cost-effective approaches for being compliant with them. This paper proposes an approach for requirements formal verification where formal methods, languages, and tools are only minimally exposed to the user, and are integrated into one of the commonly used system modeling environments based on SysML. This approach does not require particular expertise in formal methods still allowing to apply them. Hence, personnel training costs and development costs should be kept limited. The proposed approach has been implemented as a plugin of the Topcased environment. Although it is limited to discrete system models, it has been successfully experimented on an industrial use case
