Real-time and Probabilistic Temporal Logics: An Overview
Over the last two decades, there has been an extensive study on logical
formalisms for specifying and verifying real-time systems. Temporal logics have
been an important research subject within this direction. Although numerous
logics have been introduced for the formal specification of real-time and
complex systems, an up to date comprehensive analysis of these logics does not
exist in the literature. In this paper we analyse real-time and probabilistic
temporal logics which have been widely used in this field. We extrapolate the
notions of decidability, axiomatizability, expressiveness, model checking, etc.
for each logic analysed. We also provide a comparison of features of the
temporal logics discussed
A decidable weakening of Compass Logic based on cone-shaped cardinal directions
We introduce a modal logic, called Cone Logic, whose formulas describe
properties of points in the plane and spatial relationships between them.
Points are labelled by proposition letters and spatial relations are induced by
the four cone-shaped cardinal directions. Cone Logic can be seen as a weakening
of Venema's Compass Logic. We prove that, unlike Compass Logic and other
projection-based spatial logics, its satisfiability problem is decidable
(precisely, PSPACE-complete). We also show that it is expressive enough to
capture meaningful interval temporal logics - in particular, the interval
temporal logic of Allen's relations "Begins", "During", and "Later", and their
transposes
Real-Time Synthesis is Hard!
We study the reactive synthesis problem (RS) for specifications given in
Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL). RS is known to be undecidable in a very
general setting, but on infinite words only; and only the very restrictive BRRS
subcase is known to be decidable (see D'Souza et al. and Bouyer et al.). In
this paper, we precise the decidability border of MITL synthesis. We show RS is
undecidable on finite words too, and present a landscape of restrictions (both
on the logic and on the possible controllers) that are still undecidable. On
the positive side, we revisit BRRS and introduce an efficient on-the-fly
algorithm to solve it
Path Checking for MTL and TPTL over Data Words
Metric temporal logic (MTL) and timed propositional temporal logic (TPTL) are
quantitative extensions of linear temporal logic, which are prominent and
widely used in the verification of real-timed systems. It was recently shown
that the path checking problem for MTL, when evaluated over finite timed words,
is in the parallel complexity class NC. In this paper, we derive precise
complexity results for the path-checking problem for MTL and TPTL when
evaluated over infinite data words over the non-negative integers. Such words
may be seen as the behaviours of one-counter machines. For this setting, we
give a complete analysis of the complexity of the path-checking problem
depending on the number of register variables and the encoding of constraint
numbers (unary or binary). As the two main results, we prove that the
path-checking problem for MTL is P-complete, whereas the path-checking problem
for TPTL is PSPACE-complete. The results yield the precise complexity of model
checking deterministic one-counter machines against formulae of MTL and TPTL
