Fast Algorithms for Parameterized Problems with Relaxed Disjointness Constraints
In parameterized complexity, it is a natural idea to consider different
generalizations of classic problems. Usually, such generalization are obtained
by introducing a "relaxation" variable, where the original problem corresponds
to setting this variable to a constant value. For instance, the problem of
packing sets of size at most into a given universe generalizes the Maximum
Matching problem, which is recovered by taking . Most often, the
complexity of the problem increases with the relaxation variable, but very
recently Abasi et al. have given a surprising example of a problem ---
-Simple -Path --- that can be solved by a randomized algorithm with
running time . That is, the complexity of the
problem decreases with . In this paper we pursue further the direction
sketched by Abasi et al. Our main contribution is a derandomization tool that
provides a deterministic counterpart of the main technical result of Abasi et
al.: the algorithm for -Monomial
Detection, which is the problem of finding a monomial of total degree and
individual degrees at most in a polynomial given as an arithmetic circuit.
Our technique works for a large class of circuits, and in particular it can be
used to derandomize the result of Abasi et al. for -Simple -Path. On our
way to this result we introduce the notion of representative sets for
multisets, which may be of independent interest. Finally, we give two more
examples of problems that were already studied in the literature, where the
same relaxation phenomenon happens. The first one is a natural relaxation of
the Set Packing problem, where we allow the packed sets to overlap at each
element at most times. The second one is Degree Bounded Spanning Tree,
where we seek for a spanning tree of the graph with a small maximum degree
Coloring random graphs online without creating monochromatic subgraphs
Consider the following random process: The vertices of a binomial random
graph are revealed one by one, and at each step only the edges
induced by the already revealed vertices are visible. Our goal is to assign to
each vertex one from a fixed number of available colors immediately and
irrevocably without creating a monochromatic copy of some fixed graph in
the process. Our first main result is that for any and , the threshold
function for this problem is given by , where
denotes the so-called \emph{online vertex-Ramsey density} of
and . This parameter is defined via a purely deterministic two-player game,
in which the random process is replaced by an adversary that is subject to
certain restrictions inherited from the random setting. Our second main result
states that for any and , the online vertex-Ramsey density
is a computable rational number. Our lower bound proof is algorithmic, i.e., we
obtain polynomial-time online algorithms that succeed in coloring as

An Algorithmic Metatheorem for Directed Treewidth
The notion of directed treewidth was introduced by Johnson, Robertson,
Seymour and Thomas [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, Vol 82, 2001] as
a first step towards an algorithmic metatheory for digraphs. They showed that
some NP-complete properties such as Hamiltonicity can be decided in polynomial
time on digraphs of constant directed treewidth. Nevertheless, despite more
than one decade of intensive research, the list of hard combinatorial problems
that are known to be solvable in polynomial time when restricted to digraphs of
constant directed treewidth has remained scarce. In this work we enrich this
list by providing for the first time an algorithmic metatheorem connecting the
monadic second order logic of graphs to directed treewidth. We show that most
of the known positive algorithmic results for digraphs of constant directed
treewidth can be reformulated in terms of our metatheorem. Additionally, we
show how to use our metatheorem to provide polynomial time algorithms for two
classes of combinatorial problems that have not yet been studied in the context
of directed width measures. More precisely, for each fixed , we show how to count in polynomial time on digraphs of directed
treewidth , the number of minimum spanning strong subgraphs that are the
union of directed paths, and the number of maximal subgraphs that are the
union of directed paths and satisfy a given minor closed property. To prove
our metatheorem we devise two technical tools which we believe to be of
independent interest. First, we introduce the notion of tree-zig-zag number of
a digraph, a new directed width measure that is at most a constant times
directed treewidth. Second, we introduce the notion of -saturated tree slice
language, a new formalism for the specification and manipulation of infinite

Walking Through Waypoints
We initiate the study of a fundamental combinatorial problem: Given a
capacitated graph , find a shortest walk ("route") from a source to a destination that includes all vertices specified by a set
: the \emph{waypoints}. This waypoint routing problem
finds immediate applications in the context of modern networked distributed
systems. Our main contribution is an exact polynomial-time algorithm for graphs
of bounded treewidth. We also show that if the number of waypoints is
logarithmically bounded, exact polynomial-time algorithms exist even for
general graphs. Our two algorithms provide an almost complete characterization
of what can be solved exactly in polynomial-time: we show that more general
problems (e.g., on grid graphs of maximum degree 3, with slightly more
waypoints) are computationally intractable
Observer Placement for Source Localization: The Effect of Budgets and Transmission Variance
When an epidemic spreads in a network, a key question is where was its
source, i.e., the node that started the epidemic. If we know the time at which
various nodes were infected, we can attempt to use this information in order to
identify the source. However, maintaining observer nodes that can provide their
infection time may be costly, and we may have a budget on the number of
observer nodes we can maintain. Moreover, some nodes are more informative than
others due to their location in the network. Hence, a pertinent question
arises: Which nodes should we select as observers in order to maximize the
probability that we can accurately identify the source? Inspired by the simple
setting in which the node-to-node delays in the transmission of the epidemic
are deterministic, we develop a principled approach for addressing the problem
even when transmission delays are random. We show that the optimal
observer-placement differs depending on the variance of the transmission delays
and propose approaches in both low- and high-variance settings. We validate our
methods by comparing them against state-of-the-art observer-placements and show
that, in both settings, our approach identifies the source with higher

Solving weighted and counting variants of connectivity problems parameterized by treewidth deterministically in single exponential time
It is well known that many local graph problems, like Vertex Cover and
Dominating Set, can be solved in 2^{O(tw)}|V|^{O(1)} time for graphs G=(V,E)
with a given tree decomposition of width tw. However, for nonlocal problems,
like the fundamental class of connectivity problems, for a long time we did not
know how to do this faster than tw^{O(tw)}|V|^{O(1)}. Recently, Cygan et al.
(FOCS 2011) presented Monte Carlo algorithms for a wide range of connectivity
problems running in time $c^{tw}|V|^{O(1)} for a small constant c, e.g., for
Hamiltonian Cycle and Steiner tree. Naturally, this raises the question whether
randomization is necessary to achieve this runtime; furthermore, it is
desirable to also solve counting and weighted versions (the latter without
incurring a pseudo-polynomial cost in terms of the weights).
We present two new approaches rooted in linear algebra, based on matrix rank
and determinants, which provide deterministic c^{tw}|V|^{O(1)} time algorithms,
also for weighted and counting versions. For example, in this time we can solve
the traveling salesman problem or count the number of Hamiltonian cycles. The
rank-based ideas provide a rather general approach for speeding up even
straightforward dynamic programming formulations by identifying "small" sets of
representative partial solutions; we focus on the case of expressing
connectivity via sets of partitions, but the essential ideas should have
further applications. The determinant-based approach uses the matrix tree
theorem for deriving closed formulas for counting versions of connectivity
problems; we show how to evaluate those formulas via dynamic programming.Comment: 36 page
