    Sulautettu ohjelmistototeutus reaaliaikaiseen paikannusjärjestelmään

    Asset tracking often necessitates wireless, radio-frequency identification (RFID). In practice, situations often arise where plain inventory operations are not sufficient, and methods to estimate movement trajectory are needed for making reliable observations, classification and report generation. In this thesis, an embedded software application for an industrial, resource-constrained off-the-shelf RFID reader device in the UHF frequency range is designed and implemented. The software is used to configure the reader and its air-interface operations, accumulate read reports and generate events to be reported over network connections. Integrating location estimation methods to the application facilitates the possibility to make deploying middleware RFID solutions more streamlined and robust while reducing network bandwidth requirements. The result of this thesis is a functional embedded software application running on top of an embedded Linux distribution on an ARM processor. The reader software is used commercially in industrial and logistics applications. Non-linear state estimation features are applied, and their performance is evaluated in empirical experiments.Tavaroiden seuranta edellyttää usein langatonta radiotaajuustunnistustekniikkaa (RFID). Käytännön sovelluksissa tulee monesti tilanteita joissa pelkkä inventointi ei riitä, vaan tarvitaan menetelmiä liikeradan estimointiin luotettavien havaintojen ja luokittelun tekemiseksi sekä raporttien generoimiseksi. Tässä työssä on suunniteltu ja toteutettu sulautettu ohjelmistosovellus teolliseen, resursseiltaan rajoitettuun ja kaupallisesti saatavaan UHF-taajuusalueen RFID-lukijalaitteeseen. Ohjelmistoa käytetään lukijalaitteen ja sen ilmarajapinnan toimintojen konfigurointiin, lukutapahtumien keräämiseen ja raporttien lähettämiseen verkkoyhteyksiä pitkin. Paikkatiedon estimointimenetelmien integroiminen ohjelmistoon mahdollistaa välitason RFID-sovellusten toteuttamisen aiempaa suoraviivaisemin ja luotettavammin, vähentäen samalla vaatimuksia tietoverkon kaistanleveydelle. Työn tuloksena on toimiva sulautettu ohjelmistosovellus, jota ajetaan sulautetussa Linux-käyttöjärjestelmässä ARM-arkkitehtuurilla.     Intelligent Feature Selection Techniques for Pattern Classification of Time-Domain Signals

    Time-domain signals form the basis of analysis for a variety of applications, including those involving variable conditions or physical changes that result in degraded signal quality. Typical approaches to signal analysis fail under these conditions, as these types of changes often lie outside the scope of the domain\u27s basic analytic theory and are too complex for modeling. Sophisticated signal processing techniques are required as a result. In this work, we develop a robust signal analysis technique that is suitable for a wide variety of time-domain signal analysis applications. Statistical pattern classification routines are applied to problems of interest involving a physical change in the domain of the problem that translate into changes in the signal characteristics. The basis of this technique involves a signal transformation known as the Dynamic Wavelet Fingerprint, used to generate a feature space in addition to features related to the physical domain of the individual application. Feature selection techniques are explored that incorporate the context of the problem into the feature space reduction in an attempt to identify optimal representations of these data sets

    Capacitive coupled RFID tag using a new dielectric droplet encapsulation approach

    Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a well-known and fast-growing technology used to identify people, animals and products. RFID tags are used to replace bar codes in a wide range of applications, to mention just a few, retail, transportation, logistics and healthcare. The two main driving aspects for most of research and development projects concerning RFID tags are the reduction of assembly costs and the downsizing of microchips. In that respect and considering an Industry 4.0 scenario, the study of a new assembly approach for passive and high frequency RFID tags has been proposed and studied in this thesis. In this new approach, which is based on the inkjet printing technology, a specifically designed radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) will be delivered, inside a liquid dielectric droplet, onto the antenna and no longer placed and oriented precisely as it happens nowadays with pick-and-place and flip chip machines. After a landing phase, the liquid droplet (with the encapsulated chip) will self-aligns with respect to the contact thanks to capillary forces driven by specifically designed wetting conditions on the substrate of the antenna. Finally, with few additional steps, the complete RFID tag is created. This research project brings to light a considerable simplification and a very high potential of parallelization, compatible with large volume manufacturing methods, in comparison to nowadays existing technologies. This may substantially drive down the fabrication costs. An in-depth analysis of electrical performances have been carefully undertaken and compliance with the ISO/IEC 144443 standard has been verified. Mathematical models have been developed showing fundamental limits for the maximum tag reading range and power requirements of the RFID reader

    RFID in Supply Chains

    A critical factor in increasing the widespread adoption of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for different supply chain applications is the ability to achieve a high level of read accuracy. The read accuracy is dependent on the size of the region that receives sufficient power from the reader. While most current research considers the powering region of a reader to be determined only by its read range, in reality read accuracy can be complicated by such issues as polarizations and the relative orientations of reader antennas and tags. In particular, when tag positions are not fixed, the specific placement of reader antennas and their interaction with the polarization and the orientation of the tags can have a significant effect on the success of the interrogation processes. This research uses Friis' equation for both the forward link and the backward link to explicitly consider orientations and polarizations while addressing the problem of optimizing the locations of a set of reader antennas at a scanning portal. The objective is to maximize the size of the powering region satisfying a particular read accuracy requirement. This research develops different methodologies and provides results for obtaining the best antenna locations to address different scenarios in supply chain applications. It addresses the case where items are static within a read portal, as well as when they might be moving on some type of material handling equipment. Various scenarios are considered for the tag orientations, including item-level applications where any orientation might be possible and case-level and pallet-level scenarios where the number of possible tag orientations might be limited

    Development and Experimental Analysis of Wireless High Accuracy Ultra-Wideband Localization Systems for Indoor Medical Applications

    This dissertation addresses several interesting and relevant problems in the field of wireless technologies applied to medical applications and specifically problems related to ultra-wideband high accuracy localization for use in the operating room. This research is cross disciplinary in nature and fundamentally builds upon microwave engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, and biomedical engineering. A good portion of this work has been published in peer reviewed microwave engineering and biomedical engineering conferences and journals. Wireless technologies in medicine are discussed with focus on ultra-wideband positioning in orthopedic surgical navigation. Characterization of the operating room as a medium for ultra-wideband signal transmission helps define system design requirements. A discussion of the first generation positioning system provides a context for understanding the overall system architecture of the second generation ultra-wideband positioning system outlined in this dissertation. A system-level simulation framework provides a method for rapid prototyping of ultra-wideband positioning systems which takes into account all facets of the system (analog, digital, channel, experimental setup). This provides a robust framework for optimizing overall system design in realistic propagation environments. A practical approach is taken to outline the development of the second generation ultra-wideband positioning system which includes an integrated tag design and real-time dynamic tracking of multiple tags. The tag and receiver designs are outlined as well as receiver-side digital signal processing, system-level design support for multi-tag tracking, and potential error sources observed in dynamic experiments including phase center error, clock jitter and drift, and geometric position dilution of precision. An experimental analysis of the multi-tag positioning system provides insight into overall system performance including the main sources of error. A five base station experiment shows the potential of redundant base stations in improving overall dynamic accuracy. Finally, the system performance in low signal-to-noise ratio and non-line-of-sight environments is analyzed by focusing on receiver-side digitally-implemented ranging algorithms including leading-edge detection and peak detection. These technologies are aimed at use in next-generation medical systems with many applications including surgical navigation, wireless telemetry, medical asset tracking, and in vivo wireless sensors
