    Get PDF
Drones/UAVs are able to perform air operations that are very difficult to be performed by manned aircrafts. In addition, drones' usage brings significant economic savings and environmental benefits, while reducing risks to human life. In this paper, we present key technologies that enable development of drone systems. The technologies are identified based on the usages of drones (driven by COMP4DRONES project use cases). These technologies are grouped into four categories: U-space capabilities, system functions, payloads, and tools. Also, we present the contributions of the COMP4DRONES project to improve existing technologies. These contributions aim to ease drones’ customization, and enable their safe operation. This project has received funding from the ECSEL Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 826610. With the increased threat of ransomware and the substantial growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) market, there is significant motivation for attackers to carry out IoT-based ransomware campaigns. In this thesis, the viability of such malware is tested. As part of this work, various techniques that could be used by ransomware developers to attack commercial IoT devices were explored. First, methods that attackers could use to communicate with the victim were examined, such that a ransom note was able to be reliably sent to a victim. Next, the viability of using "bricking" as a method of ransom was evaluated, such that devices could be remotely disabled unless the victim makes a payment to the attacker. Research was then performed to ascertain whether it was possible to remotely gain persistence on IoT devices, which would improve the efficacy of existing ransomware methods, and provide opportunities for more advanced ransomware to be created. Finally, after successfully identifying a number of persistence techniques, the viability of privacy-invasion based ransomware was analysed. For each assessed technique, proofs of concept were developed. A range of devices -- with various intended purposes, such as routers, cameras and phones -- were used to test the viability of these proofs of concept. To test communication hijacking, devices' "channels of communication" -- such as web services and embedded screens -- were identified, then hijacked to display custom ransom notes. During the analysis of bricking-based ransomware, a working proof of concept was created, which was then able to remotely brick five IoT devices. After analysing the storage design of an assortment of IoT devices, six different persistence techniques were identified, which were then successfully tested on four devices, such that malicious filesystem modifications would be retained after the device was rebooted. When researching privacy-invasion based ransomware, several methods were created to extract information from data sources that can be commonly found on IoT devices, such as nearby WiFi signals, images from cameras, or audio from microphones. These were successfully implemented in a test environment such that ransomable data could be extracted, processed, and stored for later use to blackmail the victim. Overall, IoT-based ransomware has not only been shown to be viable but also highly damaging to both IoT devices and their users. While the use of IoT-ransomware is still very uncommon "in the wild", the techniques demonstrated within this work highlight an urgent need to improve the security of IoT devices to avoid the risk of IoT-based ransomware causing havoc in our society. Finally, during the development of these proofs of concept, a number of potential countermeasures were identified, which can be used to limit the effectiveness of the attacking techniques discovered in this PhD research

Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her aşaması anlatılmıştır.

The place where curses are manufactured : four poets of the Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was unique among American wars. To pinpoint its uniqueness, it was necessary to look for a non-American voice that would enable me to articulate its distinctiveness and explore the American character as observed by an Asian. Takeshi Kaiko proved to be most helpful. From his novel, Into a Black Sun, I was able to establish a working pair of 'bookends' from which to approach the poetry of Walter McDonald, Bruce Weigl, Basil T. Paquet and Steve Mason. Chapter One is devoted to those seemingly mismatched 'bookends,' Walt Whitman and General William C. Westmoreland, and their respective anthropocentric and technocentric visions of progress and the peculiarly American concept of the "open road" as they manifest themselves in Vietnam. In Chapter, Two, I analyze the war poems of Walter McDonald. As a pilot, writing primarily about flying, his poetry manifests General Westmoreland's technocentric vision of the 'road' as determined by and manifest through technology. Chapter Three focuses on the poems of Bruce Weigl. The poems analyzed portray the literal and metaphorical descent from the technocentric, 'numbed' distance of aerial warfare to the world of ground warfare, and the initiation of a 'fucking new guy,' who discovers the contours of the self's interior through a set of experiences that lead from from aerial insertion into the jungle to the degradation of burning human feces. Chapter Four, devoted to the thirteen poems of Basil T. Paquet, focuses on the continuation of the descent begun in Chapter Two. In his capacity as a medic, Paquet's entire body of poems details his quotidian tasks which entail tending the maimed, the mortally wounded and the dead. The final chapter deals with Steve Mason's JohnnY's Song, and his depiction of the plight of Vietnam veterans back in "The World" who are still trapped inside the interior landscape of their individual "ghettoes" of the soul created by their war-time experiences

This study examined the experiences of educators in a small, rural elementary school who provided live instruction in an online setting during the COVID-19 pandemic. The scholarly practitioner collaborated with inquiry partners to enhance student engagement, teacher self-efficacy, and principal leadership skills by implementing Morning Meeting, a social and emotional learning program from Responsive Classroom®, when students participated in remote online learning. The scholarly practitioner used over four decades of research about efficacy and identified leadership strategies and approaches that assisted in building individual and collective teacher efficacy so that teachers could effectively engage students. Behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement were identified in research and used by teachers to determine the quality of participation in Morning Meeting. Teachers took daily and weekly attendance to measure engagement, and the scholarly practitioner facilitated team meetings with groups of teachers to compile comments and statements regarding student engagement. These statements were coded using pre-selected codes based on research about types of student engagement. The scholarly practitioner facilitated the administration of a pre-study and post-study Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale so that individual, grade-span, and full-school efficacy data could be compiled. In addition, the scholarly practitioner held team meetings with the teachers to compile comments and categorize those statements into four areas: job accomplishment, skill development, social interaction, and coping with job stress. These four areas were also coded using the four categories described on the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale. The scholarly practitioner also maintained a journal using a self-reflection tool about the lived experiences before, during, and after the study. The emphasis on this journal was about the development and growth of leadership skills, and the categories were pre-coded using Bernard Bass’s categories of transformational leadership: individualized consideration, inspirational motivation, idealized influence, and intellectual stimulation. Student engagement increased throughout the study, and 77 percent of students were fully engaged during the study. Teachers expressed an increase in collective efficacy at the conclusion of the study, and six of the eight teachers reported individual increases in efficacy. The scholarly practitioner’s use of differentiation within the context of transformational leadership was observed most frequently in the study

This report summarizes a review of technologies used to monitor bridge scour with an emphasis on techniques appropriate for testing during and immediately after design flood conditions. The goal of this study is to identify potential technologies and strategies for Illinois Department of Transportation that may be used to enhance the reliability of bridge safety monitoring during floods from local to state levels. The research team conducted a literature review of technologies that have been explored by state departments of transportation (DOTs) and national agencies as well as state-of-the-art technologies that have not been extensively employed by DOTs. This review included informational interviews with representatives from DOTs and relevant industry organizations. Recommendations include considering (1) acquisition of tethered kneeboard or surf ski-mounted single-beam sonars for rapid deployment by local agencies, (2) acquisition of remote-controlled vessels mounted with single-beam and side-scan sonars for statewide deployment, (3) development of large-scale particle image velocimetry systems using remote-controlled drones for stream velocity and direction measurement during floods, (4) physical modeling to develop Illinois-specific hydrodynamic loading coefficients for Illinois bridges during flood conditions, and (5) development of holistic risk-based bridge assessment tools that incorporate structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, and scour measurements to provide rapid feedback for bridge closure decisions.IDOT-R27-SP50Ope

Increased lifetime of Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs) and the impact of degradation, efficiency and costs in the LCOE of Emerging PVs

    Get PDF
Emerging photovoltaic (PV) technologies such as organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and perovskites (PVKs) have the potential to disrupt the PV market due to their ease of fabrication (compatible with cheap roll-to-roll processing) and installation, as well as their significant efficiency improvements in recent years. However, rapid degradation is still an issue present in many emerging PVs, which must be addressed to enable their commercialisation. This thesis shows an OPV lifetime enhancing technique by adding the insulating polymer PMMA to the active layer, and a novel model for quantifying the impact of degradation (alongside efficiency and cost) upon levelized cost of energy (LCOE) in real world emerging PV installations. The effect of PMMA morphology on the success of a ternary strategy was investigated, leading to device design guidelines. It was found that either increasing the weight percent (wt%) or molecular weight (MW) of PMMA resulted in an increase in the volume of PMMA-rich islands, which provided the OPV protection against water and oxygen ingress. It was also found that adding PMMA can be effective in enhancing the lifetime of different active material combinations, although not to the same extent, and that processing additives can have a negative impact in the devices lifetime. A novel model was developed taking into account realistic degradation profile sourced from a literature review of state-of-the-art OPV and PVK devices. It was found that optimal strategies to improve LCOE depend on the present characteristics of a device, and that panels with a good balance of efficiency and degradation were better than panels with higher efficiency but higher degradation as well. Further, it was found that low-cost locations were more favoured from reductions in the degradation rate and module cost, whilst high-cost locations were more benefited from improvements in initial efficiency, lower discount rates and reductions in install costs

Reactivation of a hyperextended rift system: the Basque‐Cantabrian Pyrenees case.

This contribution investigates the role of a hyperextended rift system in the formation of the Basque-Cantabrian Pyrenees by discussing their present-day architecture as well as the inherited rift template. Moreover, this work attempts to decipher the onset of reactivation of a hyperextended system and to discuss the related processes during collision. To carry out this study, two regional, crustal-scale cross-sections are presented that provide geological and geophysical information and interpretations across the Central and Western Basque-Cantabrian Pyrenees. Moreover, the two sections are restored back to the Cenomanian and Barremian, corresponding to the end of two independent rift stages respectively. The two sections document different structural styles observed along the orogenic belt. The Central section, involving the Iberian and European plates, shows a thin-skinned structural style, where the Upper Triassic salt acted as a decoupling level between the sedimentary cover and the underlying basement during both extension and reactivation. The Western section, by contrast, crosses only the Iberian plate (i.e., intra-plate section) and displays a hybrid situation showing both thin- and thick-skinned structural styles that were conditioned by the irregular distribution of Triassic salt. Extensional deformation was localised in the north (i.e., Bay of Biscay) and less important in the south. Despite compressional reactivation, the northern part of the Western section preserves its rift template, which provides key insights to restore the internal part of the Central section. In contrast to the Western section, the Central section shows stacked depocenters, resulting from overprinted Mesozoic rift events that had a first order control on the subsequent reactivation. This study corroborates the importance of rift inheritance during the onset of convergence by reactivating the most distal and weak part of the rift system (i.e., serpentinised mantle) before starting the collision phase. A key learning is that the understanding of the nature and distribution of decoupling levels at a crustal scale is fundamental to reconstruct the structural evolution during the formation and reactivation of a hyperextended rift system

A Molecular Approach to the Diagnosis, Assessment, Monitoring and Treatment of Pulmonary Non-Tuberculous Mycobacterial Disease

    Get PDF
Introduction: Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) can cause disease of the lungs and sinuses, lymph nodes, joints and central nervous system as well as disseminated infections in immunocompromised individuals. Efforts to tackle infections in NTM are hampered by a lack of reliable biomarkers for diagnosis, assessment of disease activity, and prognostication. Aims: The broad aims of this thesis are: 1. to develop molecular assays capable of quantifying the 6 most common pathogenic mycobacteria (M. abscessus, M. avium, M. intracellulare, M. malmoense, M. kansasii, M. xenopi) and calculate comparative sensitivities and specificities for each assay. 2. to assess patients’ clinical course over 12 – 18 months by performing the developed molecular assays against DNA extracted from sputum from patients with NTM infection. 3. to assess dynamic bacterial changes of the lung microbiome in patients on treatment for NTM disease and those who are treatment na ve. Methods: DNA was extracted from a total of 410 sputum samples obtained from 38 patients who were either: • commencing treatment for either M. abscessus or Mycobacterium avium complex. • considered colonised with M. abscessus or Mycobacterium avium complex (i.e. cultured NTM but were not deemed to have infection as they did not meet ATS or BTS criteria for disease). • Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) or non-CF bronchiectasis but had never cultured NTM. For the development of quantitative molecular assays, NTM hsp65 gene sequences were aligned and interrogated for areas of variability. These variable regions enabled the creation of species specific probes. In vitro sensitivity and specificity for each probe was determined by testing each probe against a panel of plasmids containing hsp65 gene inserts from different NTM species. Quantification accuracy was determined by using each assay against a mock community containing serial dilutions of target DNA. Each sample was tested with the probes targeting: M. abscessus, M. avium and M. intracellulare producing a longitudinal assessment of NTM copy number during each patient’s clinical course. In addition, a total of 64 samples from 16 patients underwent 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterise longitudinal changes in the microbiome of both NTM disease and controls. Results: In vitro sensitivity for the custom assays were 100% and specificity ranged from 91.6% to 100%. In terms of quantification accuracy, there was no significant difference between the measured results of each assay and the expected values when performed in singleplex. The assays were able to accurately determine NTM copy number to a theoretical limit of 10 copies/μl. When used against samples derived from human sputum and using culture results as a gold standard, the sensitivity of the assay for M. abscessus was found to be 0.87 and 0.86 for MAC. The specificity of the assay for M. abscessus was 0.95 and 0.62 for MAC. The negative predictive value of the assay for M. abscessus was 0.98 and 0.95 for MAC. This resulted in an AUC of 0.92 for M. abscessus and 0.74 for MAC. Longitudinal analysis of the lung microbiome using 16SrRNA gene sequencing showed that bacterial burden initially decreases after initiation of antibiotic therapy but begins to return to normal levels over several months of antibiotic therapy. This effect is mirrored by changes in alpha diversity. The decrease in bacterial burden and loss of alpha diversity was found to be secondary to significant changes in specific genera such as Veillonella and Streptococcus. The abundance of other Proteobacteria such as Pseudomonas remain relatively constant. Conclusion: The molecular assay has shown high in vitro sensitivity and specificity for the detection and accurate quantification of the 6 most commonly pathogenic NTM species. The assays successfully identified NTM DNA from human sputum samples. A notable association between NTM copy number and the cessation of one or more antibiotics existed (i.e. when one antibiotic was stopped because of patient intolerance, NTM copy number increased, often having been unrecordable prior to this). The qPCR assays developed in this thesis provide an affordable, real time and rapid measurement of NTM burden allowing clinicians to act on problematic results sooner than currently possible. There was no significant difference between the microbiome in bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis nor was there a significant difference between the microbiome in patients requiring treatment for NTM and those who did not. Patients receiving treatment experienced an initial decrease in bacterial burden over the first weeks of treatment followed by a gradual increase towards baseline over the next weeks to months. This change was mirrored in measures of alpha diversity. Changes in abundance and diversity were accounted for by decreases in specific bacteria whilst the abundance of other bacteria increased, occupying the microbial niche created. These bacteria (for example Pseudomonas spp) are often associated with morbidity.Open Acces
