    3-D Seismic Methods for Shallow Imaging Beneath Pavement

    The research presented in this dissertation focuses on survey design and acquisition of near-surface 3D seismic reflection and surface wave data on pavement. Increased efficiency for mapping simple subsurface interfaces through a combined use of modified land survey designs and a hydraulically driven acquisition device are demonstrated. Using these techniques subsurface reflectors can be quickly and efficiently imaged in the course of an afternoon. The use of surface waves to analyze the upper several tens of meters of the subsurface has become an important technique for near-surface investigations. A new method for acquiring and visualizing surface wave information in three-dimensions is demonstrated. As will be shown, a volume of shear wave velocities can be created by acquiring surface waves along multiple, coincident lines. Using a series of computer algorithms the data can then be graphed in 2D or 3D space providing a method of visualization not previously available

    Space shuttle: Structural integrity and assessment study

    A study program was conducted to determine the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) requirements and to develop a preliminary nondestructive evaluation manual for the entire space shuttle vehicle. The rationale and guidelines for structural analysis and NDE requirements development are discussed. Recommendations for development of NDE technology for the orbiter thermal protection system and certain structural components are included. Recommendations to accomplish additional goals toward space shuttle inspection are presented

    A DMAIC integrated fuzzy FMEA model: A case study in the automotive industry

    The growing competitiveness in the automotive industry and the strict standards to which it is subject, require high quality standards. For this, quality tools such as the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) are applied to quantify the risk of potential failure modes. However, for qualitative defects with subjectivity and associated uncertainty, and the lack of specialized technicians, it revealed the inefficiency of the visual inspection process, as well as the limitations of the FMEA that is applied to it. The fuzzy set theory allows dealing with the uncertainty and subjectivity of linguistic terms and, together with the expert systems, allows modeling of the knowledge involved in tasks that require human expertise. In response to the limitations of FMEA, a fuzzy FMEA system was proposed. Integrated in the design, measure, analyze, improve and control (DMAIC) cycle, the proposed system allows the representation of expert knowledge and improves the analysis of subjective failures, hardly detected by visual inspection, compared to FMEA. The fuzzy FMEA system was tested in a real case study at an industrial manufacturing unit. The identified potential failure modes were analyzed and a fuzzy risk priority number (RPN) resulted, which was compared with the classic RPN. The main results revealed several differences between both. The main differences between fuzzy FMEA and classical FMEA come from the non-linear relationship between the variables and in the attribution of an RPN classification that assigns linguistic terms to the results, thus allowing a strengthening of the decision-making regarding the mitigation actions of the most “important” failure modes.publishersversionpublishe

    The effect of overloading on reliability of wheel loader structural components

    This research attempts to provide a fundamental understanding into the relationship between the productivity of material handling equipment, specifically wheel loaders, and their ability to operate reliably when subjected to high overload conditions. The overall aim is to determine the effect of overloading the bucket on wheel loader reliability. The specific objectives of the research are to: 1) evaluate the effect of overloading the bucket on wheel loader productivity; 2) examine the effect of overloading the bucket on hydraulic pressures in the hoist cylinders (used as a proxy for forces on a wheel loader); and 3) investigate the effect of overloading the bucket on the reliability of structural components of a wheel loader. To achieve these objectives, the research used data from on-board equipment monitors from the global fleet of ultra-class wheel loaders for a specific original equipment manufacturer to test the various research hypotheses. The data included production data, failure and repair data, and hydraulic cylinder pressures, which were used as a proxy for stresses on structural components. ANOVA and Pearson and Spearman correlations tests were performed on data samples to test the hypotheses. Duty-cycle relationships were established using linear life stress relationships ratios for the wheel loaders structural components. The research showed that, while higher bucket loads increase productivity, there is evidence that they slow down the loading cycle, may be detrimental to productivity. The hoist cylinder pressure increased with increasing payload weight. The reliability of the structural components was similar in both the standard and duty-cycle cases; although, the accuracy of the reliability models increased when the models accounted for duty-cycles --Abstract, page iii

    Applications of aerospace technology to petroleum extraction and reservoir engineering

    Through contacts with the petroleum industry, the petroleum service industry, universities and government agencies, important petroleum extraction problems were identified. For each problem, areas of aerospace technology that might aid in its solution were also identified, where possible. Some of the problems were selected for further consideration. Work on these problems led to the formulation of specific concepts as candidate for development. Each concept is addressed to the solution of specific extraction problems and makes use of specific areas of aerospace technology
