    This open access book as one of the fastest-growing areas of research in machine learning, metalearning studies principled methods to obtain efficient models and solutions by adapting machine learning and data mining processes. This adaptation usually exploits information from past experience on other tasks and the adaptive processes can involve machine learning approaches. As a related area to metalearning and a hot topic currently, automated machine learning (AutoML) is concerned with automating the machine learning processes. Metalearning and AutoML can help AI learn to control the application of different learning methods and acquire new solutions faster without unnecessary interventions from the user. This book offers a comprehensive and thorough introduction to almost all aspects of metalearning and AutoML, covering the basic concepts and architecture, evaluation, datasets, hyperparameter optimization, ensembles and workflows, and also how this knowledge can be used to select, combine, compose, adapt and configure both algorithms and models to yield faster and better solutions to data mining and data science problems. It can thus help developers to develop systems that can improve themselves through experience. This book is a substantial update of the first edition published in 2009.     The Generation of a Physics Informed Machine Learning Model to Predict Defect Evolution in Materials & On the Thermally Activated Regime of Dislocation Motion: A Simulation Driven Study on the Mechanical Behavior of Crystals

    Line defects in crystals, known as dislocations, govern the mechanisms of plastic deformation at the micro-meso scale. The study of dislocations has proliferated the field of materials science and engineering for since the 1950’s, and modern studies show increasing utilization of computational methods to model the evolution of line defects in material systems. In keeping with modern research practice, the studies herewith demonstrate the use of advanced computing to generate models which can be used to better understand the behaviors of dislocations within crystal matrices. An advanced high-throughput model for a physically informed machine learning graph neural network (PIML-GNN) is outlined, which draws upon the output provided from Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and the computational efficacy of Dislocation Dynamics (DD). The intention of the study is to improve the dynamical prediction of DD mobility laws using the evolution of dislocation structures extracted from MD and processed using Ovito DXA analysis [29]. Each configuration is provided to the DD framework such that the local stress state can be embedded into the information passed to the ML model for training. The extracted dislocation mobility is then validated analytically by comparing regimes of phonon drag and thermal activation. In a separate study, the energetics of thermal activation are analyzed via a stochastic dislocation dynamics (SDD) approach. To impose stochasticity, which simulates the effects of thermal energy in the system, a Langevin thermostat overlays a white noise profile to the dislocation stress field whose amplitude scales directly with the absolute temperature of the simulation. Specific dislocation configurations are designed such that local energy minima are easily recognizable, and the stress state of the simulation is varied such that energy barriers can be overcome in thermally activated processes. From these studies, the bypass of local obstacles can be analyzed by extracting activation volumes and energies necessary to facilitate thermally activated processes in dislocation motion

    This paper begins with an analysis of trends - over the period 2012-2018 - for total bank loans, non-performing loans, and the number of active, working enterprises. A review survey was done on national data from Italy with a comparison developed on a local subset from the Sardinia Region. Empirical evidence appears to support the hypothesis of the paper: can the rating class assigned by banks - using current IRB and A-IRB systems - to micro and very small enterprises, whose ability to replace financial resources using endogenous means is structurally impaired, ipso facto orient the results of performance in the same terms of PD assigned by the algorithm, thereby upending the principle of cause and effect? The thesis is developed through mathematical modeling that demonstrates the interaction of the measurement tool (the rating algorithm applied by banks) on the collapse of the loan status (default, performing, or some intermediate point) of the assessed micro-entity. Emphasis is given, in conclusion, to the phenomenon using evidence of the intrinsically mutualistic link of the two populations of banks and (micro) enterprises provided by a system of differential equation

    A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC

    Pre-service Teachers’ Motivational Orientations and the Impact of Self-Regulated Learning on their Academic Achievement: A Mixed Method Study.

    This convergent parallel mixed methods study investigated pre-service teachers’ motivation and self-regulation learning and its impact on their academic achievement during their professional training in colleges of education. In addition, the contributory factors of beliefs and values that lay behind some pre-service teachers’ motivational orientations were examined through episodic narratives. The multi-stage sampling technique was used in selecting 500 teacher trainees from 40 residential colleges of education in Ghana and data sources included surveys, archival and interview data. The results from the study indicated that taken as a set, the motivation component of pre-service teachers’ self-regulation learning construct mediated the relationship between prior performances (entry aggregates) and academic achievement (GPA). The learning strategies component intervened significantly in the influence of prior performance on academic achievement. In the final model, prior performance showed a moderately large indirect effect on academic achievement through ten out of the fifteen variables of the self-regulation learning construct. The research findings indicated that desirable attributes such as critical thinking, metacognitive strategy use, and students’ value for task on the courses on the teacher training programme were non-existing and did not predict pre-service teachers’ academic performance in college. The pre-service teachers’ narratives suggested that family members and friends, instead of candidates themselves, played a significant role in their choice of colleges of education for training and accordingly the teaching profession; motivation was principally external and teaching was mainly perceived as a means of imparting knowledge to young ones. However, participants held some positive values such as recognizing diversity among children, collaborating with parents to achieve optimal learning for children and holding high the ethical principles of the teaching profession. This study provides an ecological and empirical foundation for the specification and explanation of the theoretical connections between pre-service teachers’ prior attainment, motivational orientations and self-regulation learning strategy use and their academic achievement in professional training context

    Complying with norms. a neurocomputational exploration

    The subject matter of this thesis can be summarized by a triplet of questions and answers. Showing what these questions and answers mean is, in essence, the goal of my project. The triplet goes like this: Q: How can we make progress in our understanding of social norms and norm compliance? A: Adopting a neurocomputational framework is one effective way to make progress in our understanding of social norms and norm compliance. Q: What could the neurocomputational mechanism of social norm compliance be? A: The mechanism of norm compliance probably consists of Bayesian - Reinforcement Learning algorithms implemented by activity in certain neural populations. Q: What could information about this mechanism tell us about social norms and social norm compliance? A: Information about this mechanism tells us that: a1: Social norms are uncertainty-minimizing devices. a2: Social norm compliance is one trick that agents employ to interact coadaptively and smoothly in their social environment. Most of the existing treatments of norms and norm compliance (e.g. Bicchieri 2006; Binmore 1993; Elster 1989; Gintis 2010; Lewis 1969; Pettit 1990; Sugden 1986; Ullmann‐Margalit 1977) consist in what Cristina Bicchieri (2006) refers to as “rational reconstructions.” A rational reconstruction of the concept of social norm “specifies in which sense one may say that norms are rational, or compliance with a norm is rational” (Ibid., pp. 10-11). What sets my project apart from these types of treatments is that it aims, first and foremost, at providing a description of some core aspects of the mechanism of norm compliance. The single most original idea put forth in my project is to bring an alternative explanatory framework to bear on social norm compliance. This is the framework of computational cognitive neuroscience. The chapters of this thesis describe some ways in which central issues concerning social norms can be fruitfully addressed within a neurocomputational framework. In order to qualify and articulate the triplet above, my strategy consists firstly in laying down the beginnings of a model of the mechanism of norm compliance behaviour, and then zooming in on specific aspects of the model. Such a model, the chapters of this thesis argue, explains apparently important features of the psychology and neuroscience of norm compliance, and helps us to understand the nature of the social norms we live by
