    Towards an Indexical Model of Situated Language Comprehension for Cognitive Agents in Physical Worlds

    We propose a computational model of situated language comprehension based on the Indexical Hypothesis that generates meaning representations by translating amodal linguistic symbols to modal representations of beliefs, knowledge, and experience external to the linguistic system. This Indexical Model incorporates multiple information sources, including perceptions, domain knowledge, and short-term and long-term experiences during comprehension. We show that exploiting diverse information sources can alleviate ambiguities that arise from contextual use of underspecific referring expressions and unexpressed argument alternations of verbs. The model is being used to support linguistic interactions in Rosie, an agent implemented in Soar that learns from instruction.Comment: Advances in Cognitive Systems 3 (2014

    Abstract Pronominal Anaphora in Three Registers of English

    Identifying the expressions in a text that refer to the same entity, or coreference resolution, is an important problem in natural language processing. Abstract anaphora are distinct from other types of reference because they refer to abstract entities in discourse such as events, facts, and propositions, and their antecedents can have non-nominal phrase structure. Non-nominal antecedents are an interesting challenge in coreference resolution because the pronoun provides little information about the syntactic structure or semantics of the antecedent. A great deal of work in corpus annotation for coreference and coreference resolution has focused on newspaper text, and the goal of this study is to investigate how patterns in the use of abstract pronominal anaphora vary in three text types. I compiled a corpus of newswire text, spontaneous dialog and planned speech and annotated all instances of the pronouns ‘it’, this’, and ‘that’. I also annotated any non-nominal antecedents used with these pronouns. I compared frequencies of these pronouns, their referential functions, and characteristics of their non-nominal antecedents. I found variation in the frequencies of referential functions, the choice of pronoun and its referential function, the grammatical structure of non-nominal antecedents and the difficulty of the annotation task. The results indicate that the range of pronominal reference, pronominal anaphora and non-nominal antecedents in spoken discourse may not be retrievable from even very large collections of newswire texts

    Focusing for Pronoun Resolution in English Discourse: An Implementation

    Anaphora resolution is one of the most active research areas in natural language processing. This study examines focusing as a tool for the resolution of pronouns which are a kind of anaphora. Focusing is a discourse phenomenon like anaphora. Candy Sidner formalized focusing in her 1979 MIT PhD thesis and devised several algorithms to resolve definite anaphora including pronouns. She presented her theory in a computational framework but did not generally implement the algorithms. Her algorithms related to focusing and pronoun resolution are implemented in this thesis. This implementation provides a better comprehension of the theory both from a conceptual and a computational point of view.     From Verbs to Tasks: An Integrated Account of Learning Tasks from Situated Interactive Instruction.

    Intelligent collaborative agents are becoming common in the human society. From virtual assistants such as Siri and Google Now to assistive robots, they contribute to human activities in a variety of ways. As they become more pervasive, the challenge of customizing them to a variety of environments and tasks becomes critical. It is infeasible for engineers to program them for each individual use. Our research aims at building interactive robots and agents that adapt to new environments autonomously by interacting with human users using natural modalities. This dissertation studies the problem of learning novel tasks from human-agent dialog. We propose a novel approach for interactive task learning, situated interactive instruction (SII), and investigate approaches to three computational challenges that arise in designing SII agents: situated comprehension, mixed-initiative interaction, and interactive task learning. We propose a novel mixed-modality grounded representation for task verbs which encompasses their lexical, semantic, and task-oriented aspects. This representation is useful in situated comprehension and can be learned through human-agent interactions. We introduce the Indexical Model of comprehension that can exploit extra-linguistic contexts for resolving semantic ambiguities in situated comprehension of task commands. The Indexical model is integrated with a mixed-initiative interaction model that facilitates a flexible task-oriented human-agent dialog. This dialog serves as the basis of interactive task learning. We propose an interactive variation of explanation-based learning that can acquire the proposed representation. We demonstrate that our learning paradigm is efficient, can transfer knowledge between structurally similar tasks, integrates agent-driven exploration with instructional learning, and can acquire several tasks.     Centering, Anaphora Resolution, and Discourse Structure

    Centering was formulated as a model of the relationship between attentional state, the form of referring expressions, and the coherence of an utterance within a discourse segment (Grosz, Joshi and Weinstein, 1986; Grosz, Joshi and Weinstein, 1995). In this chapter, I argue that the restriction of centering to operating within a discourse segment should be abandoned in order to integrate centering with a model of global discourse structure. The within-segment restriction causes three problems. The first problem is that centers are often continued over discourse segment boundaries with pronominal referring expressions whose form is identical to those that occur within a discourse segment. The second problem is that recent work has shown that listeners perceive segment boundaries at various levels of granularity. If centering models a universal processing phenomenon, it is implausible that each listener is using a different centering algorithm.The third issue is that even for utterances within a discourse segment, there are strong contrasts between utterances whose adjacent utterance within a segment is hierarchically recent and those whose adjacent utterance within a segment is linearly recent. This chapter argues that these problems can be eliminated by replacing Grosz and Sidner's stack model of attentional state with an alternate model, the cache model. I show how the cache model is easily integrated with the centering algorithm, and provide several types of data from naturally occurring discourses that support the proposed integrated model.     Towards a Computational Model of Anaphora in Discourse: Reference to Events and Actions

    When people talk or write, they refer to things, objects, events, actions, facts and/or states that have been mentioned before. Such context-dependent reference is called anaphora. In general, linguists and researchers working in artificial intelligence have looked at the problem of anaphora interpretation as that one of finding the correct antecedent for anaphor - that is, the previous words or phrases to which the anaphor is linked. Lately, people working in the area of anaphora have suggested that in order for anaphors to be interpreted correctly, they must be interpreted by reference to entities evoked by the previous discourse rather than in terms of their antecedents. In this recent work, people have focused on entities of type concrete individual (an x) or set of such individuals (some xs) or generic class of such individuals (xs). This proposal focuses on anaphora interpreted as referring to entities of type event and action. It considers four issues: (i) what aspects of the discourse give evidence of the events and actions the speaker is talking about, (ii) how actions and events are represented in the listener\u27s discourse model, (iii) how to delimit the set of events and actions which correspond to possible choices for a particular anaphor, and (iv) how to obtain the speaker\u27s intended referent to an action or event from that set of possible choices. Anaphoric forms that are used to refer to entities of type action and event include sentential-it, sentential-that pronominalizations as well as do it, do that, and do this forms. I will concentrate on the four previously mentioned issues along with other mechanisms that will provide us with better tools for the successful interpretation of anaphoric reference in discourse
