Object-based 2D-to-3D video conversion for effective stereoscopic content generation in 3D-TV applications
Three-dimensional television (3D-TV) has gained increasing popularity in the broadcasting domain, as it enables enhanced viewing experiences in comparison to conventional two-dimensional (2D) TV. However, its application has been constrained due to the lack of essential contents, i.e., stereoscopic videos. To alleviate such content shortage, an economical and practical solution is to reuse the huge media resources that are available in monoscopic 2D and convert them to stereoscopic 3D. Although stereoscopic video can be generated from monoscopic sequences using depth measurements extracted from cues like focus blur, motion and size, the quality of the resulting video may be poor as such measurements are usually arbitrarily defined and appear inconsistent with the real scenes. To help solve this problem, a novel method for object-based stereoscopic video generation is proposed which features i) optical-flow based occlusion reasoning in determining depth ordinal, ii) object segmentation using improved region-growing from masks of determined depth layers, and iii) a hybrid depth estimation scheme using content-based matching (inside a small library of true stereo image pairs) and depth-ordinal based regularization. Comprehensive experiments have validated the effectiveness of our proposed 2D-to-3D conversion method in generating stereoscopic videos of consistent depth measurements for 3D-TV applications
Learning how to be robust: Deep polynomial regression
Polynomial regression is a recurrent problem with a large number of
applications. In computer vision it often appears in motion analysis. Whatever
the application, standard methods for regression of polynomial models tend to
deliver biased results when the input data is heavily contaminated by outliers.
Moreover, the problem is even harder when outliers have strong structure.
Departing from problem-tailored heuristics for robust estimation of parametric
models, we explore deep convolutional neural networks. Our work aims to find a
generic approach for training deep regression models without the explicit need
of supervised annotation. We bypass the need for a tailored loss function on
the regression parameters by attaching to our model a differentiable hard-wired
decoder corresponding to the polynomial operation at hand. We demonstrate the
value of our findings by comparing with standard robust regression methods.
Furthermore, we demonstrate how to use such models for a real computer vision
problem, i.e., video stabilization. The qualitative and quantitative
experiments show that neural networks are able to learn robustness for general
polynomial regression, with results that well overpass scores of traditional

Optical Flow in Mostly Rigid Scenes
The optical flow of natural scenes is a combination of the motion of the
observer and the independent motion of objects. Existing algorithms typically
focus on either recovering motion and structure under the assumption of a
purely static world or optical flow for general unconstrained scenes. We
combine these approaches in an optical flow algorithm that estimates an
explicit segmentation of moving objects from appearance and physical
constraints. In static regions we take advantage of strong constraints to
jointly estimate the camera motion and the 3D structure of the scene over
multiple frames. This allows us to also regularize the structure instead of the
motion. Our formulation uses a Plane+Parallax framework, which works even under
small baselines, and reduces the motion estimation to a one-dimensional search
problem, resulting in more accurate estimation. In moving regions the flow is
treated as unconstrained, and computed with an existing optical flow method.
The resulting Mostly-Rigid Flow (MR-Flow) method achieves state-of-the-art

A Neural Model of How the Brain Computes Heading from Optic Flow in Realistic Scenes
Animals avoid obstacles and approach goals in novel cluttered environments using visual information, notably optic flow, to compute heading, or direction of travel, with respect to objects in the environment. We present a neural model of how heading is computed that describes interactions among neurons in several visual areas of the primate magnocellular pathway, from retina through V1, MT+, and MSTd. The model produces outputs which are qualitatively and quantitatively similar to human heading estimation data in response to complex natural scenes. The model estimates heading to within 1.5° in random dot or photo-realistically rendered scenes and within 3° in video streams from driving in real-world environments. Simulated rotations of less than 1 degree per second do not affect model performance, but faster simulated rotation rates deteriorate performance, as in humans. Cavlectometry: Towards Holistic Reconstruction of Large Mirror Objects
We introduce a method based on the deflectometry principle for the
reconstruction of specular objects exhibiting significant size and geometric
complexity. A key feature of our approach is the deployment of an Automatic
Virtual Environment (CAVE) as pattern generator. To unfold the full power of
this extraordinary experimental setup, an optical encoding scheme is developed
which accounts for the distinctive topology of the CAVE. Furthermore, we devise
an algorithm for detecting the object of interest in raw deflectometric images.
The segmented foreground is used for single-view reconstruction, the background
for estimation of the camera pose, necessary for calibrating the sensor system.
Experiments suggest a significant gain of coverage in single measurements
compared to previous methods. To facilitate research on specular surface
