Background: Uptake of the COVID-19 booster vaccine among ethnic minority individuals has been lower than in the general population. However, there is little research examining the psychosocial factors that contribute to COVID-19 booster vaccine hesitancy in this population.Aim: Our study aimed to determine which factors predicted COVID-19 vaccination intention in minority ethnic individuals in Middlesbrough, using Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs, in addition to demographic variables.Method: We used a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected using an online survey. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews. 64 minority ethnic individuals (33 females, 31 males; mage = 31.06, SD = 8.36) completed the survey assessing PMT constructs, COVID-19conspiracy beliefs and demographic factors. 42.2% had received the booster vaccine, 57.6% had not. 16 survey respondents were interviewed online to gain further insight into factors affecting booster vaccineacceptance. Results: Multiple regression analysis showed that perceived susceptibility to COVID-19 was a significant predictor of booster vaccination intention, with higher perceived susceptibility being associated with higher intention to get the booster. Additionally, COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs significantly predictedintention to get the booster vaccine, with higher conspiracy beliefs being associated with lower intention to get the booster dose. Thematic analysis of the interview data showed that barriers to COVID-19 booster vaccination included time constraints and a perceived lack of practical support in the event ofexperiencing side effects. Furthermore, there was a lack of confidence in the vaccine, with individuals seeing it as lacking sufficient research. Participants also spoke of medical mistrust due to historical events involving medical experimentation on minority ethnic individuals. Conclusion: PMT and conspiracy beliefs predict COVID-19 booster vaccination in minority ethnic individuals. To help increase vaccine uptake, community leaders need to be involved in addressing people’s concerns, misassumptions, and lack of confidence in COVID-19 vaccination

The aim of this paper is to discuss the unexploited forces of user-orientation and shared responsibility to promote sustainable value co-creation during service innovation projects in welfare service ecosystems. The framework is based on the theoretical field of public service logic (PSL) and our thesis is that service innovation seriously requires a user-oriented approach, and that such an approach enables resource integration based on the service-user’s needs and lifeworld. In our findings, we identify prerequisites and opportunities of collaborative service innovation projects in order to transform these projects into sustainable resource integration once they have ended

Towards a decolonial medical treatment team approach : the case of mental healthcare in South Africa

Collaborative medical treatment teamwork through effective communication can enhance mental healthcare. Therefore, medical treatment teamwork is widely advocated as an approach for treating mentally ill patients, since diverse healthcare professionals, contribute expertise for patient care. Effective communication amongst members of the medical treatment team, is fundamental for effective medical treatment teamwork. Therefore, this research focused on exploring how the medical treatment team interacted in order to achieve effective patient care, from a South African perspective. Approximately 80 per cent South Africans are influenced by socio-cultural factors when approaching and treating mental illness. Hence, a decolonial medical treatment team approach to mental healthcare, enables the medical treatment team to cater for important aspects such as cultural diversity within the medical treatment team, medical treatment team collaboration with traditional healers, and catering for the patient’s cultural context in mental healthcare. This focus caters effectively for mental healthcare in a South African context. However, there is no single model or theory that caters for important aspects (such as the medical treatment teamwork context and socio-cultural aspects catering for diversity) that influence mental healthcare. Hence, the aim of this study was to propose a comprehensive conceptual framework that was synthesised from literature, which included various health communication theories, medical treatment teamwork theories, decolonial theories and cultural theories. The conceptual framework was verified using four data collection methods namely, document analysis, observation, face-to-face semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions. Data was analysed using specific steps from Braun and Clarke (2006) via a thematic analysis. The key findings from this study indicated that collaborative medical treatment teamwork which considers the socio-cultural context in mental healthcare, is beneficial in achieving effective mental healthcare. As a result, a comprehensive conceptual framework for a medical treatment team approach to mental healthcare was proposed as a contribution for this study. Ukusebenzisana kwethimba lokwelashwa ngokuxhumana okuphumelelayo kungathuthukisa ukunakekelwa kwezempilo yengqondo. Ngakho-ke, ukusebenzisana kwethimba lokwelashwa kukhuthazwa kabanzi njengendlela yokwelapha iziguli ezigula ngengqondo, njengoba ochwepheshe abahlukahlukene bezokunakekelwa kwempilo, benikela ngobuchwepheshe bokunakekelwa kwesiguli. Ukuxhumana okuphumelelayo phakathi kwamalungu ethimba lezokwelapha, kubalulekile ekusebenzeni kwethimba lokwelashwa okuphumelelayo. Ngakho-ke, lolu cwaningo lugxile ekuhloleni ukuthi ithimba lezokwelapha lisebenzisana kanjani ukuze kuzuzwe ukunakekelwa kwesiguli okusebenzayo, ngokombono waseNingizimu Afrika. Cishe amaphesenti angama-80 abantu baseNingizimu Afrika bathonywa yizici zezenhlalo namasiko lapho besondela futhi belapha ukugula ngengqondo. Ngakho-ke, indlela yethimba lezokwelapha elingasekho ekunakekelweni ngokwengqondo, yenza ithimba lezokwelapha likwazi ukubhekelela izici ezibalulekile njengokuhlukahluka kwamasiko eqenjini lezokwelapha, ithimba lezokwelapha ukusebenzisana nabelaphi bendabuko, kanye nokubhekelela amasiko esiguli ekunakekelweni kwengqondo. Lokhu kugxila kusiza ngempumelelo ekunakekelweni kwengqondo esimeni saseNingizimu Afrika. Kodwa-ke, asikho isifanekiso esisodwa noma umbono obhekelela izici ezibalulekile (njengomongo wethimba lokwelashwa kanye nezici zenhlalonhle-zamasiko ezibhekelela ukuhlukahluka) ezinomthelela ekunakekelweni kwengqondo. Ngakho-ke, inhloso yalolu cwaningo kwakuwukuphakamisa uhlaka lomqondo olubanzi olwahlanganiswa ezincwadini, olwaluhlanganisa imibono yezokuxhumana yezempilo ehlukahlukene, imibono yethimba lezokwelapha, imibono yokuqeda ubukoloni kanye nemibono yamasiko. Uhlaka lomqondo lwaqinisekiswa kusetshenziswa izindlela ezine zokuqoqwa kwemininingwane okungukuthi, ukuhlaziya imibhalo, ukubuka, izingxoxo zobuso nobuso ezihlelwe kancane, kanye nezingxoxo zamaqembu agxilile. Imininingwane yahlaziywa kusetshenziswa izinyathelo ezithile ezivela ku-Braun and Clarke (2006) ngokuhlaziywa kwendikimba. Okutholiwe okubalulekile okuvela kulolu cwaningo kubonise ukuthi ukusebenzisana kwethimba lokwelashwa okucabangela umongo wenhlalonhle-ngokwesiko ekunakekelweni kwezengqondo, kunenzuzo ekuzuzeni ukunakekelwa kwezempilo yengqondo okusebenzayo. Ngenxa yalokho, kwahlongozwa uhlaka olubanzi lomqondo wethimba lezokwelapha ekunakekelweni ngokwengqondo njengomnikelo walolu cwaningo.Communication ScienceD. Litt. et Phil. (Communication

Using an emotional intelligence framework to enhance early childhood development caregivers’ job performance : a case study

    Get PDF
The case study explored how Early Childhood Development caregivers utilise emotional intelligence framework competences to enhance their job performance. The caregivers have a central and significant role in education given that they are leaders, role models and parents. Their emotional intelligence affects their teaching procedures and supports their educator duties. Goleman’s mixed and Mayer and Salovey’s emotional intelligence ability models served as the framework for this study. The qualitative approach, embedded in interpretivism, was utilised to explore behaviour, perspectives, experiences and feelings of participants on their use of emotional intelligence framework competences. An explanatory case design was employed to explain the link between ECD caregivers’ emotional intelligence and what transpired in the classroom environment. Nine schools with ECD centres from Gweru urban in Zimbabwe were purposefully sampled resulting in eighteen purposefully sampled female, qualified, experienced ECD caregivers aged between twenty- five and fifty- two years and nine female experienced teachers-in-charge aged from fifty years and above. Data generation methods included in-depth semi-structured interviews, focus groups and unstructured observations. A research dairy to record details of events and researcher’s views was used. Thematic analysis was applied to analyse the data for patterns and relatedness of participants’ lived experiences. The findings reveal that emotional intelligence framework dimensions of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management and the competencies within them, are useful to caregivers. Caregivers utilise competences to understand their own strengths and shortcomings, create environments conducive to learning, promote learner engagement, motivate and reduce absenteeism in children, develop competences in children, facilitate attachment between them and learners, allow effective teaching and learning enabling them to achieve their goals. The diverse emotional competencies were utilised to improve their teaching methods and in turn their job performance. Teachers-in-charge found several emotional intelligence framework competences to be useful in creating relations between caregivers and learners. However, high teacher pupil ratio affected utilisation of the competences. The study recommends incorporating emotional intelligence topics in in-service and pre-service teacher training and development to equip caregivers with expertise and ability to utilise emotional competences for the success of their teaching profession. Emotional intelligence competencies need to be given due consideration during recruitment and selection of ECD teachers. The 1: 20 policy on the teacher pupil ratio needs to be maintained and enforced to facilitate utilisation of emotion competences effectively to benefit children under caregivers’ care.Psychology of EducationPh.
