Identifying Suitable Projects For Rapid Development: Some Proposed Selection Criteria

    Get PDF
The use of rapid development techniques allows building high quality systems in short timeframes while reducing project costs and adding flexibility to the development process so it can be easily adapted to meet customer needs in a volatile market. In order to obtain the benefits of implementing rapid development methods, the development organization and the processes utilized need to be congruent with rapid development methodologies and techniques. A problem encountered by product development organizations is how to identify which projects are suitable for the rapid development approach. An extensive academic research about the implementation of rapid development techniques in Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) processes resulted in the identification of selection criteria for the determination of project suitability for rapid development methods. The selection criteria identified by this research are essential elements that must be present in every rapid development environment in order to obtain the benefits of implementing rapid development techniques

The importance that the self-determination construct has in people with intellectual disabilities’ life projects is the main paradigm of reflection of this paper. The most significant criticalities, identified by the scientific literature of reference, within the application of the construct in people with disabilities, push the author of this work towards the consideration of which are the operative modalities that are able to promote the construct. For this reason, an international overview is carried out of the most cited published reviews, meta-analyses and syntheses of research concerning programs, interventions, strategies, and activities that the studies identify as being able to implement the construct. In line with the current challenges of special pedagogy, we are outlining someof self-determination’s implementation hypotheses, in order to offer to people with intellectual disabilities the necessary opportunities to properly enter into the adulthood route

Systematic Procedures to Determine Incentive / Disincentive Dollar Amounts for Highway Transportation Construction Projects, Research Report 11-22

The Federal Highway Administration has encouraged state transportation agencies to implement Incentive/Disincentive (I/D) contracting provisions for early project completion. Although general guidelines to determine the I/D dollar amount for a project are available, there is no systematic and practical tool in use to determine optimum I/D dollar amounts for I/D projects considering road user cost, agency cost, contractor’s acceleration cost, and contractor’s cost savings. Therefore, systematic procedures and models to assist project planners and engineers in determining an appropriate I/D dollar amount are essential to optimizing the use of I/D contracting techniques. This research performed a literature review related to the determination of daily I/D dollar amounts. Caltrans I/D project data were then collected and evaluated. Project performance data were analyzed with regard to project outcomes in two key areas: project time and project cost. Statistical analyses were performed to identify the impact of I/D dollar amount on project time and cost performance. Using Construction Analysis for Pavement Rehabilitation Strategies (CA4PRS) software, Caltrans I/D projects were analyzed to introduce three different levels of CA4PRS implementations for the I/D dollar amounts calculation. Based on the results of the I/D project case studies, the systematic procedures to determine appropriate I/D dollar amounts were developed using the CA4PRS schedule-traffic-cost integration process for the new I-5 rehabilitation project in LA. The proposed procedures were applied to a typical highway pavement rehabilitation project using HMA (hot mix asphalt) materials. Further research is needed to apply the proposed model to other types of highway projects, with adjustment for the type of project

Assessing the feasibility of using value management to accelerate the implementation of sustainability

The present demand for economically viable buildings in the Saudi Public Sector is coupled with the need to maximise the efficient use of Saudi Arabian natural resources. The lack of consideration paid to sustainability issues during the concept phase has resulted in higher consumption of materials and energy during both the construction and operational phases of many building projects. Although there is extensive Value Management (VM) knowledge and experience, many who work in the Saudi Public Sector appear to have less experience of sustainable development, consequently sustainable construction is all too often not a major consideration. This paper is part of an ongoing research which aims to exploit the VM experiences and skills of those in the Saudi Public Sector in order to accelerate the understanding and implementation of sustainable development in the country. It provides an overview of the current situation of VM and sustainability in the Saudi Public Sector by investigating in-depth the: application of VM and sustainability; clients’ attitudes towards both subjects; identification of the barriers that impede their application and the determination of the level of existent knowledge about both topics in the Saudi Public Sector

Word Sense Determination from Wikipedia Data Using Neural Networks

Many words have multiple meanings. For example, “plant” can mean a type of living organism or a factory. Being able to determine the sense of such words is very useful in natural language processing tasks, such as speech synthesis, question answering, and machine translation. For the project described in this report, we used a modular model to classify the sense of words to be disambiguated. This model consisted of two parts: The first part was a neural-network-based language model to compute continuous vector representations of words from data sets created from Wikipedia pages. The second part classified the meaning of the given word without explicitly knowing what the meaning is. In this unsupervised word sense determination task, we did not need human-tagged training data or a dictionary of senses for each word. We tested the model with some naturally ambiguous words, and compared our experimental results with the related work by Schütze in 1998. Our model achieved similar accuracy as Schütze’s work for some words

UVaFTLE: Lagrangian finite time Lyapunov exponent extraction for fluid dynamic applications

Producción CientíficaThe determination of Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) is becoming very important in several disciplines, including cardiovascular engineering, aerodynam- ics, and geophysical fluid dynamics. From the computational point of view, the extraction of LCS consists of two main steps: The flowmap computation and the resolution of Finite Time Lyapunov Exponents (FTLE). In this work, we focus on the design, implementation, and parallelization of the FTLE resolution. We offer an in-depth analysis of this procedure, as well as an open source C implementation (UVaFTLE) parallelized using OpenMP directives to attain a fair parallel efficiency in shared-memory environments. We have also implemented CUDA kernels that allow UVaFTLE to leverage as many NVIDIA GPU devices as desired in order to reach the best parallel efficiency. For the sake of reproducibility and in order to con- tribute to open science, our code is publicly available through GitHub. Moreover, we also provide Docker containers to ease its usage.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad, Consejo Asesor de Educación de Castilla y León y Programas del Fondo de Desarrollo (FEDER): Proyecto PCAS (TIN2017-88614-R) y Proyecto PROPHET-2 (VA226P20).Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Agencia Estatal de Investigación y “European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR” : (MCIN/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033) - (grant TED2021-130367B-I00)Junta de Castilla y León (project VA182P20)Red Española de Supercomputación (RES) (projects IM-2022-2-0015 and IM-2022-3-0021)Publicación en abierto financiada por el Consorcio de Bibliotecas Universitarias de Castilla y León (BUCLE), con cargo al Programa Operativo 2014ES16RFOP009 FEDER 2014-2020 DE CASTILLA Y LEÓN, Actuación:20007-CL - Apoyo Consorcio BUCL
