    Knowledge Flows and Capability Building in the Indian IT Sector: A Comparative Analysis of Cluster and Non-Cluster Locations

    The role of industrial clusters in the industrialization of many emerging economies continues to dominate the debate among policy makers and researchers worldwide. While recent discussions on this debate have focused on knowledge spillovers among participants within clusters, knowledge flows between non local networks and the cluster actors have not been accorded due attention in the literature. Further, the literature does not compare the relative impact of knowledge flows among firms within clusters and firms outside clusters. In this study, we attempt a comparative analysis of the role of knowledge flows in capability formation among firms in the Indian Information Technology sector (IT sector) across cluster and non-cluster locations. The empirical results suggest that at the firm level, leveraging of capabilities to enhance performance and networks to build capabilities is not automatic; structural features of the firms’ location enable this transformation. Moreover, while capabilities affect performance of firms positively only in clusters, economies of scale and some strategies like quality certification used by firms impact performance of firms outside clusters. Interestingly, although economies of scale do not impact the performance of firms within clusters, they do, however affect the capability formation of firms within clusters only. Further, we found that local and national non-customer networks affect capability formation of firms within and outside clusters whereas international customer networks affect capability formation of firms within clusters only.     Development of IoT Service Classification Algorithm for Integrated Service Platform

    Recently, with the appearance of the IoT paradigm, the existing Internet environment has changed with various things that connect with the Internet. The IoT paradigm is applied to various service such as smart homes, building management, surveillance services, smart farm, and so on. The environment of IoT services concerned on communication and interaction processes between different devices. To solve these complex problems, many researchers and service providers are focused on integrated service platform. However, previous studies did not consider problems such as service similarity and module reusability. In this paper, we focused on classification of services for providing reusability. And we propose classification algorithm that is based on detail operation steps of IoT services. To proof proposed classification algorithm, surveyed over 100 commercial IoT services are classified into 19 groups. The experimental results present each group is grouped together by their purpose

    Design of composable services

    Service composition methods range from industry standard approaches based on Web Services and BPEL to Semantic Web approaches that rely on AI techniques to automate service discovery and composition. Service composition research mostly focuses on the dynamic (workflow) aspects of compositions. In this paper we consider the static component of service composition and discuss the importance of compatibility of service interfaces in ensuring the composability of services. Using a flight booking scenario example we show that reducing the granularity of services by decomposition into service operations with normalized interfaces produces compatible interfaces that facilitate service assembly. We then show how relational algebra can be used to represent service operations and provide a framework for service assembly. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg

    Simplified Life Cycle Analysis. A Rural School in La Pampa, Argentina

    This study case is a rural school in La Pampa, Argentina, where we compare two energy efficiency systems for construction: the local traditional building type and a proposed one, based on passive system design during its life cycle. In addition, we assume that savings of emissions of greenhousegases are valued in terms of Argentina’s energy matrix. The efficiency, in terms of energy, involves the consumption for its manufacture (extraction, transport and assembly of materials), construction, maintenance and dismantling, recycling and final disposal of waste. Knowing this information at the preliminary stage can be advantageous to evaluate the selected materials in terms of energy and cost savings to amortize its value over the life cycle, and introduce other types of design. At present, there are significant problems of resource scarcity.     The effect of reusability on perceived competitive performance of Australian software firms

    This study set out to investigate how software firms can manage their software development efforts in order to compete effectively. Based on previous studies, a research model was developed. Reusability was expected to positively influence process flexibility, process productivity and process predictability. In turn these software process performance dimensions were expected to influence perceived competitive performance, assessed in terms of market responsiveness and product cost efficiency. Three hundred and twenty organisations were surveyed. In the data reduction stage, the research model was revised and process efficiency, technoregulatory flexibility, process effectiveness and labour flexibility resulted as the new software process performance variables. The revised model was tested and findings indicate that there is a relationship between reusability and techno-regulatory flexibility and market responsiveness

    Designing for short life: industry response to the proposed reuse of building services components

    Business activity is increasingly subject to influences such as technological advancement and rising consumer expectations which necessitate a flexible approach to working practices particularly in the short-term. Organisations subject to frequent change must be supported by buildings that can readily accommodate changes in the use of internal spaces. Changing the use of a serviced usable space often necessitates alteration of supporting services installations. The functional, rather than physical, obsolescence of building services components will become more common as the rate of space use change increases. Current practice causes functionally obsolete components to be discarded when altering services installations. Reusing such functionally obsolete components, however, will recover the value of their embodied residual un-depreciated capital investment and under utilised physical life, thereby reducing the cost of services installation alteration and, indirectly, increasing serviced usable space flexibility

    A Metrics-based Framework for Measuring the Reusability of Object-Oriented Software Components

    The critical role played by software in socioeconomic advancement, has seen a rapid demand for software; creating a large backlog in affordable and quality software that needs to be written.  Although software reuse is capable of addressing this issue, effective reuse is seldom to come by, thus the issue still remains unresolved. In order to achieve effective reuse, practitioners need to focus on reusability: the property that makes software reusable. Although Object Oriented Software Development (OOSD) approach is capable of improving software reusability, a way of ascertaining if the required degree of reusability is being achieved during the OOSD process is required. This can be achieved through measurement. The task involved in measuring reusability of Object oriented (OO) software is to; determine major reusability attributes of reusable components, relate these characteristics with factors that influence them, link each factor with measurable OO design features that determines them, relate each feature with appropriate metrics, and find out how these metrics collectively determine the reusability of components.
