    Perturbation Analysis for Robust Damage Detection with Application to Multifunctional Aircraft Structures

    The most widely known form of multifunctional aircraft structure is smart structures for structural health monitoring (SHM). The aim is to provide automated systems whose purposes are to identify and to characterize possible damage within structures by using a network of actuators and sensors. Unfortunately, environmental and operational variability render many of the proposed damage detection methods difficult to successfully be applied. In this paper, an original robust damage detection approach using output-only vibration data is proposed. It is based on independent component analysis and matrix perturbation analysis, where an analytical threshold is proposed to get rid of statistical assumptions usually performed in damage detection approach. The effectiveness of the proposed SHM method is demonstrated numerically using finite element simulations and experimentally through a conformal load-bearing antenna structure and composite plates instrumented with piezoelectric ceramic materials.FUI MSIE (Pole Astech

    A new methodology for automating acoustic emission detection of metallic fatigue fractures in highly demanding aerospace environments: An overview

    The acoustic emission (AE) phenomenon has many attributes that make it desirable as a structural health monitoring or non-destructive testing technique, including the capability to continuously and globally monitor large structures using a sparse sensor array and with no dependency on defect size. However, AE monitoring is yet to fulfil its true potential, due mainly to limitations in location accuracy and signal characterisation that often arise in complex structures with high levels of background noise. Furthermore, the technique has been criticised for a lack of quantitative results and the large amount of operator interpretation required during data analysis. This paper begins by introducing the challenges faced in developing an AE based structural health monitoring system and then gives a review of previous progress made in addresing these challenges. Subsequently an overview of a novel methodology for automatic detection of fatigue fractures in complex geometries and noisy environments is presented, which combines a number of signal processing techniques to address the current limitations of AE monitoring. The technique was developed for monitoring metallic landing gear components during pre-flight certification testing and results are presented from a full-scale steel landing gear component undergoing fatigue loading. Fracture onset was successfully identify automatically at 49,000 fatigue cycles prior to final failure (validated by the use of dye penetrant inspection) and the fracture position was located to within 10. mm of the actual location

    A machine learning approach to Structural Health Monitoring with a view towards wind turbines

    The work of this thesis is centred around Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and is divided into three main parts. The thesis starts by exploring di�erent architectures of auto-association. These are evaluated in order to demonstrate the ability of nonlinear auto-association of neural networks with one nonlinear hidden layer as it is of great interest in terms of reduced computational complexity. It is shown that linear PCA lacks performance for novelty detection. The novel key study which is revealed ampli�es that single hidden layer auto-associators are not performing in a similar fashion to PCA. The second part of this study concerns formulating pattern recognition algorithms for SHM purposes which could be used in the wind energy sector as SHM regarding this research �eld is still in an embryonic level compared to civil and aerospace engineering. The purpose of this part is to investigate the e�ectiveness and performance of such methods in structural damage detection. Experimental measurements such as high frequency responses functions (FRFs) were extracted from a 9m WT blade throughout a full-scale continuous fatigue test. A preliminary analysis of a model regression of virtual SCADA data from an o�shore wind farm is also proposed using Gaussian processes and neural network regression techniques. The third part of this work introduces robust multivariate statistical methods into SHM by inclusively revealing how the in uence of environmental and operational variation a�ects features that are sensitive to damage. The algorithms that are described are the Minimum Covariance Determinant Estimator (MCD) and the Minimum Volume Enclosing Ellipsoid (MVEE). These robust outlier methods are inclusive and in turn there is no need to pre-determine an undamaged condition data set, o�ering an important advantage over other multivariate methodologies. Two real life experimental applications to the Z24 bridge and to an aircraft wing are analysed. Furthermore, with the usage of the robust measures, the data variable correlation reveals linear or nonlinear connections

    Machine learning at the interface of structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation

    While both non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) share the objective of damage detection and identification in structures, they are distinct in many respects. This paper will discuss the differences and commonalities and consider ultrasonic/guided-wave inspection as a technology at the interface of the two methodologies. It will discuss how data-based/machine learning analysis provides a powerful approach to ultrasonic NDE/SHM in terms of the available algorithms, and more generally, how different techniques can accommodate the very substantial quantities of data that are provided by modern monitoring campaigns. Several machine learning methods will be illustrated using case studies of composite structure monitoring and will consider the challenges of high-dimensional feature data available from sensing technologies like autonomous robotic ultrasonic inspection.     Correlating low energy impact damage with changes in modal parameters: diagnosis tools and FE validation

    This paper presents a basic experimental technique and simplified FE based models for the detection, localization and quantification of impact damage in composite beams around the BVID level. Detection of damage is carried out by shift in modal parameters. Localization of damage is done by a topology optimization tool which showed that correct damage locations can be found rather efficiently for low-level damage. The novelty of this paper is that we develop an All In One (AIO) package dedicated to impact identification by modal analysis. The damaged zones in the FE models are updated by reducing the most sensitive material property in order to improve the experimental/numerical correlation of the frequency response functions. These approximate damage models(in term of equivalent rigidity) give us a simple degradation factor that can serve as a warning regarding structure safety

    Damage assessment in a stiffened composite panel using non-linear data-driven modelling and ultrasonic guided waves

    Structural components made of composite materials are being used more often in aerospace and aeronautic structures due to their well-known properties such as high mass specific stiffness and strength. However, their application also increases the analysis complexity of such structures. Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for these structures aim to determine the status of the system in real time such that a longer safe life and lower operational costs can be guaranteed. On that account, this paper is concerned with the experimental validation of a structural health monitoring methodology where a damage detection and classification scheme based on an acousto-ultrasonic (AU) approach is applied to a composite panel incorporating stiffening elements using a piezoelectric active sensor network in conjunction with time-frequency multiresolution analysis and non-linear feature extraction. Therefore, structural dynamic responses from the simplified aircraft composite skin panel are collected and signal features are then extracted with a signal processing and data fusion methodology in terms of the wavelet transform technique and hierarchical non-linear principal component analysis. A critical comparison with linear feature extraction methods indicates that the proposed method outperforms the traditional linear methods for the purpose of damage classification. Additionally, results show that all the damages were detectable and classifiable, and the selected features proved capable of separating all damage conditions from the undamaged state.Postprint (published version

    Distributed piezoelectric sensor system for damage identification in structures subjected to temperature changes

    Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a very important area in a wide spectrum of fields and engineering applications. With an SHM system, it is possible to reduce the number of non-necessary inspection tasks, the associated risk and the maintenance cost in a wide range of structures during their lifetime. One of the problems in the detection and classification of damage are the constant changes in the operational and environmental conditions. Small changes of these conditions can be considered by the SHM system as damage even though the structure is healthy. Several applications for monitoring of structures have been developed and reported in the literature, and some of them include temperature compensation techniques. In real applications, however, digital processing technologies have proven their value by: (i) offering a very interesting way to acquire information from the structures under test; (ii) applying methodologies to provide a robust analysis; and (iii) performing a damage identification with a practical useful accuracy. This work shows the implementation of an SHM system based on the use of piezoelectric (PZT) sensors for inspecting a structure subjected to temperature changes. The methodology includes the use of multivariate analysis, sensor data fusion and machine learning approaches. The methodology is tested and evaluated with aluminum and composite structures that are subjected to temperature variations.     Design and validation of a structural health monitoring system for aeronautical structures.

    Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an area where the main objective is the verification of the state or the health of the structures in order to ensure proper performance and maintenance cost savings using a sensor network attached to the structure, continuous monitoring and algorithms. Different benefits are derived from the implementation of SHM, some of them are: knowledge about the behavior of the structure under different loads and different environmental changes, knowledge of the current state in order to verify the integrity of the structure and determine whether a structure can work properly or whether it needs to be maintained or replaced and, therefore, to reduce maintenance costs. The paradigm of damage identification (comparison between the data collected from the structure without damages and the current structure in orderto determine if there are any changes) can be tackled as a pattern recognition problem. Some statistical techniques as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) or Independent Component Analysis (ICA) are very useful for this purpose because they allow obtaining the most relevant information from a large amount of variables. This thesis uses an active piezoelectric system to develop statistical data driven approaches for the detection, localization and classification of damages in structures. This active piezoelectric system is permanently attached to the surface of the structure under test in order to apply vibrational excitations and sensing the dynamical responses propagated through the structure at different points. As pattern recognition technique, PCA is used to perform the main task of the proposed methodology: to build a base-line model of the structure without damage and subsequentlyto compare the data from the current structure (under test) with this model. Moreover, different damage indices are calculated to detect abnormalities in the structure under test. Besides, the localization of the damage can be determined by means of the contribution of each sensor to each index. This contribution is calculated by several different methods and their comparison is performed. To classify different damages, the damage detection methodology is extended using a Self-Organizing Map (SOM), which is properly trained and validated to build a pattern baseline model using projections of the data onto the PCAmodel and damage detection indices. This baseline is further used as a reference for blind diagnosis tests of structures. Additionally, PCA is replaced by ICAas pattern recognition technique. A comparison between the two methodologies is performed highlighting advantages and disadvantages. In order to study the performance of the damage classification methodology under different scenarios, the methodology is tested using data from a structure under several different temperatures. The methodologies developed in this work are tested and validated using different structures, in particular an aircraft turbine blade, an aircraft wing skeleton, an aircraft fuselage,some aluminium plates and some composite matarials plates.La monitorización de daños en estructuras (SHM por sus siglas en inglés) es un área que tiene como principal objetivo la verificación del estado o la salud de la estructura con el fin de asegurar el correcto funcionamiento de esta y ahorrar costos de mantenimiento. Para esto se hace uso de sensores que son adheridos a la estructura, monitorización continua y algoritmos. Diferentes beneficios se obtienen de la aplicación de SHM, algunos de ellos son: el conocimiento sobre el desempeño de la estructura cuando esta es sometida a diversas cargas y cambios ambientales, el conocimiento del estado actual de la estructura con el fin de determinar la integridad de la estructura y definir si esta puede trabajar adecuadamente o si por el contrario debe ser reparada o reemplazada con el correspondiente beneficio del ahorro de gastos de mantenimiento. El paradigma de la identificación de daños (comparación entre los datos obtenidos de la estructura sin daños y la estructura en un estado posterior para determinar cambios) puede ser abordado como un problema de reconocimiento de patrones. Algunas técnicas estadísticas tales como Análisis de Componentes Principales (PCA por sus siglas en inglés) o Análisis de Componentes Independientes (ICA por sus siglas en ingles) son muy útiles para este propósito puesto que permiten obtener la información más relevante de una gran cantidad de variables. Esta tesis hace uso de un sistema piezoeléctrico activo para el desarrollo de algoritmos estadísticos de manejo de datos para la detección, localización y clasificación de daños en estructuras. Este sistema piezoeléctrico activo está permanentemente adherido a la superficie de la estructura bajo prueba con el objeto de aplicar señales vibracionales de excitación y recoger las respuestas dinámicas propagadas a través de la estructura en diferentes puntos. Como técnica de reconocimiento de patrones se usa Análisis de Componentes Principales para realizar la tarea principal de la metodología propuesta: construir un modelo PCA base de la estructura sin daño y posteriormente compararlo con los datos de la estructura bajo prueba. Adicionalmente, algunos índices de daños son calculados para detectar anormalidades en la estructura bajo prueba. Para la localización de daños se usan las contribuciones de cada sensor a cada índice, las cuales son calculadas mediante varios métodos de contribución y comparadas para mostrar sus ventajas y desventajas. Para la clasificación de daños, se amplia la metodología de detección añadiendo el uso de Mapas auto-organizados, los cuales son adecuadamente entrenados y validados para construir un modelo patrón base usando proyecciones de los datos sobre el modelo PCA base e índices de detección de daños. Este patrón es usado como referencia para realizar un diagnóstico ciego de la estructura. Adicionalmente, dentro de la metodología propuesta, se utiliza ICA en lugar de PCA como técnica de reconocimiento de patrones. Se incluye también una comparación entre la aplicación de las dos técnicas para mostrar las ventajas y desventajas. Para estudiar el desempeño de la metodología de clasificación de daños bajo diferentes escenarios, esta se prueba usando datos obtenidos de una estructura sometida a diferentes temperaturas.
