    Stress is a known contributor to several life-threatening medical conditions and a risk factor for triggering acute cardiovascular events, as well as a root cause of several social problems. The burden of stress is increasing globally and, with that, is the interest in developing effective stress-monitoring solutions for preventive and connected health, particularly with the help of wearable sensing technologies. The recent development of miniaturized and flexible biosensors has enabled the development of connected wearable solutions to monitor stress and intervene in time to prevent the progression of stress-induced medical conditions.     Early diagnosis of disorders based on behavioural shifts and biomedical signals

    There are many disorders that directly affect people’s behaviour. The people that are suffering from such a disorder are not aware of their situation, and too often the disorders are identified by relatives or co-workers because they notice behavioural shifts. However, when these changes become noticeable, it is often too late and irreversible damages have already been produced. Early detection is the key to prevent severe health-related damages and healthcare costs, as well as to improve people’s quality of life. Nowadays, in full swing of ubiquitous computing paradigm, users’ behaviour patterns can be unobtrusively monitored by means of interactions with many electronic devices. The application of this technology for the problem at hand would lead to the development of systems that are able to monitor disorders’ onset and progress in an ubiquitous and unobtrusive way, thus enabling their early detection. Some attempts for the detection of specific disorders based on these technologies have been proposed, but a global methodology that could be useful for the early detection of a wide range of disorders is still missing. This thesis aims to fill that gap by presenting as main contribution a global screening methodology for the early detection of disorders based on unobtrusive monitoring of physiological and behavioural data. The proposed methodology is the result of a cross-case analysis between two individual validation scenarios: stress in the workplace and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) at home, from which conclusions that contribute to each of the two research fields have been drawn. The analysis of similarities and differences between the two case studies has led to a complete and generalized definition of the steps to be taken for the detection of a new disorder based on ubiquitous computing.Jendearen portaeran eragin zuzena duten gaixotasun ugari daude.     Performance Evaluation of Network Anomaly Detection Systems

    Nowadays, there is a huge and growing concern about security in information and communication technology (ICT) among the scientific community because any attack or anomaly in the network can greatly affect many domains such as national security, private data storage, social welfare, economic issues, and so on. Therefore, the anomaly detection domain is a broad research area, and many different techniques and approaches for this purpose have emerged through the years. Attacks, problems, and internal failures when not detected early may badly harm an entire Network system. Thus, this thesis presents an autonomous profile-based anomaly detection system based on the statistical method Principal Component Analysis (PCADS-AD). This approach creates a network profile called Digital Signature of Network Segment using Flow Analysis (DSNSF) that denotes the predicted normal behavior of a network traffic activity through historical data analysis. That digital signature is used as a threshold for volume anomaly detection to detect disparities in the normal traffic trend. The proposed system uses seven traffic flow attributes: Bits, Packets and Number of Flows to detect problems, and Source and Destination IP addresses and Ports, to provides the network administrator necessary information to solve them. Via evaluation techniques, addition of a different anomaly detection approach, and comparisons to other methods performed in this thesis using real network traffic data, results showed good traffic prediction by the DSNSF and encouraging false alarm generation and detection accuracy on the detection schema. The observed results seek to contribute to the advance of the state of the art in methods and strategies for anomaly detection that aim to surpass some challenges that emerge from the constant growth in complexity, speed and size of today’s large scale networks, also providing high-value results for a better detection in real time.Atualmente, existe uma enorme e crescente preocupação com segurança em tecnologia da informação e comunicação (TIC) entre a comunidade científica. Isto porque qualquer ataque ou anomalia na rede pode afetar a qualidade, interoperabilidade, disponibilidade, e integridade em muitos domínios, como segurança nacional, armazenamento de dados privados, bem-estar social, questões econômicas, e assim por diante. Portanto, a deteção de anomalias é uma ampla área de pesquisa, e muitas técnicas e abordagens diferentes para esse propósito surgiram ao longo dos anos. Ataques, problemas e falhas internas quando não detetados precocemente podem prejudicar gravemente todo um sistema de rede. Assim, esta Tese apresenta um sistema autônomo de deteção de anomalias baseado em perfil utilizando o método estatístico Análise de Componentes Principais (PCADS-AD). Essa abordagem cria um perfil de rede chamado Assinatura Digital do Segmento de Rede usando Análise de Fluxos (DSNSF) que denota o comportamento normal previsto de uma atividade de tráfego de rede por meio da análise de dados históricos. Essa assinatura digital é utilizada como um limiar para deteção de anomalia de volume e identificar disparidades na tendência de tráfego normal. O sistema proposto utiliza sete atributos de fluxo de tráfego: bits, pacotes e número de fluxos para detetar problemas, além de endereços IP e portas de origem e destino para fornecer ao administrador de rede as informações necessárias para resolvê-los. Por meio da utilização de métricas de avaliação, do acrescimento de uma abordagem de deteção distinta da proposta principal e comparações com outros métodos realizados nesta tese usando dados reais de tráfego de rede, os resultados mostraram boas previsões de tráfego pelo DSNSF e resultados encorajadores quanto a geração de alarmes falsos e precisão de deteção. Com os resultados observados nesta tese, este trabalho de doutoramento busca contribuir para o avanço do estado da arte em métodos e estratégias de deteção de anomalias, visando superar alguns desafios que emergem do constante crescimento em complexidade, velocidade e tamanho das redes de grande porte da atualidade, proporcionando também alta performance. Ainda, a baixa complexidade e agilidade do sistema proposto contribuem para que possa ser aplicado a deteção em tempo real

    PhD thesisThis thesis focuses on the design and implementation of a novel security domain surveillance system framework that incorporates multimodal information sources to assist the task of event detection from video and social media sources. The comprehensive framework consists of four modules including Data Source, Content Extraction, Parsing and Semantic Knowledge. The security domain ontology conceptual model is proposed for event representation and tailored in conformity with elementary aspects of event description. The adaptation of DOLCE foundational ontology promotes flexibility for heterogeneous ontologies to interoperate. The proposed mapping method using eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT) stylesheet approach is presented to allow ontology enrichment and instance population to be executed efficiently. The dataset for visual semantic analysis utilizes video footage of 2011 London Riots obtained from Scotland Yard. The concepts person, face, police, car, fire, running, kicking and throwing are chosen to be analysed. The visual semantic analysis results demonstrate successful persons, actions and events detection in the video footage of riot events. For social semantic analysis, a collection of tweets from twitter channels that was actively reporting during the 2011 London Riots was compiled to create a Twitter corpus. The annotated data are mapped in the ontology based on six concepts: token, location, organization, sentence, verb, and noun. Several keywords related to the event that has been presented in the visual and social media sources are chosen to examine the correlation between both sources and to draw supplementary information regarding the event. The chosen keywords describe actions running, throwing, and kicking; activity attack, smash and loot; event fire; and location Hackney and Croydon. An experiment in respect to concept-noun relations are also been executed. The ontology-based visual and social media analysis yields a promising result in analysing long content surveillance videos and lengthy text corpus of social media user-generated content. Adopting ontology-based approach, the proposed novel security domain surveillance system framework enables a large amount of visual and social media data to be analysed systematically and automatically, and promotes a better method for event detection and understanding

    An Analytic Training Approach for Recognition in Still Images and Videos

    This dissertation proposes a general framework to efficiently identify the objects of interest (OI) in still images and its application can be further extended to human action recognition in videos. The frameworks utilized in this research to process still images and videos are similar in architecture except they have different content representations. Initially, global level analysis is employed to extract distinctive feature sets from an input data. For the global analysis of data the bidirectional two dimensional principal component analysis (2D-PCA) is employed to preserve correlation amongst neighborhood pixels. Furthermore, to cope with the inherent limitations within the holistic approach local information is introduced into the framework. The local information of OI is identified utilizing FERNS and affine SIFT (ASIFT) approaches for spatial and temporal datasets, respectively. For supportive local information, the feature detection is followed by an effective pruning strategy to divide these features into inliers and outliers. A cluster of inliers represents local features which exhibit stable behavior and geometric consistency. Incremental learning is a significant but often overlooked problem in action recognition. The final part of this dissertation proposes a new action recognition algorithm based on sequential learning and adaptive representation of the human body using Pyramid of Histogram of Oriented Gradients (PHOG) features. The changing shape and appearance of human body parts is tracked based on the weak appearance constancy assumption. The constantly changing shape of an OI is maximally covered by the small blocks to approximate the body contour of a segmented foreground object. In addition, the analytically determined learning phase guarantees lower computational burden for classification. The utilization of a minimum number of video frames in a causal way to recognize an action is also explored in this dissertation. The use of PHOG features adaptively extracted from individual frames allows the recognition of an incoming action video using a small group of frames which eliminates the need of large look-ahead
