    Detection and optimization of suspension-free logic programs

    AbstractIn recent years, language mechanisms to suspend, or delay, the execution of goals until certain variables become bound have become increasingly popular in logic programming languages. While convenient, such mechanisms can make control flow within a program difficult to predict at compile time, and therefore render many traditional compiler optimizations inapplicable. Unfortunately, this performance cost is also incurred by programs that do not use any delay primitives. In this paper, we describe a simple dataflow analysis for detecting computations where suspension effects can be ignored, and discuss several low-level optimizations that rely on this information. Our algorithm has been implemented in the jc system. Optimizations based on information it produces result in significant performance improvements, demonstrating speed comparable to or exceeding that of optimized C programs

    The characteristics of CC and CLP systems are in principle very dierent However a recent trend towards convergence in the implementation techniques for these systems can be observed While CLP and Prolog systems have been incorporating capabilities to deal with userdened suspension and coroutining CC compilers have been trying to coalesce negrained tasks into coarsergrained sequential threads This convergence of techniques opens up the possibility of having a general purpose kernel language and abstract machine to serve as a compilation target for a variety of userlevel languages We propose a transformation technique directed towards such an objective In particular we report on techniques to support the Andorra computational model essentially emulating the AndorraI system via program transformation into a sequential language with delay primitives The system is automatic comprising an optional program analyzer and a basic transformer to the kernel language It turns out that a simple parallel CLP or Prolog system with dynamic scheduling is sucient as a kernel language for this purpose The preliminary results are quite encouraging performance of the resulting system is comparable to the current AndorraI implementation

    Independence in CLP Languages

    Studying independence of goals has proven very useful in the context of logic programming. In particular, it has provided a formal basis for powerful automatic parallelization tools, since independence ensures that two goals may be evaluated in parallel while preserving correctness and eciency. We extend the concept of independence to constraint logic programs (CLP) and prove that it also ensures the correctness and eciency of the parallel evaluation of independent goals. Independence for CLP languages is more complex than for logic programming as search space preservation is necessary but no longer sucient for ensuring correctness and eciency. Two additional issues arise. The rst is that the cost of constraint solving may depend upon the order constraints are encountered. The second is the need to handle dynamic scheduling. We clarify these issues by proposing various types of search independence and constraint solver independence, and show how they can be combined to allow dierent optimizations, from parallelism to intelligent backtracking. Sucient conditions for independence which can be evaluated \a priori" at run-time are also proposed. Our study also yields new insights into independence in logic programming languages. In particular, we show that search space preservation is not only a sucient but also a necessary condition for ensuring correctness and eciency of parallel execution

    Using global analysis, partial specifications, and an extensible assertion language for program validation and debugging

    We discuss a framework for the application of abstract interpretation as an aid during program development, rather than in the more traditional application of program optimization. Program validation and detection of errors is first performed statically by comparing (partial) specifications written in terms of assertions against information obtained from (global) static analysis of the program. The results of this process are expressed in the user assertion language. Assertions (or parts of assertions) which cannot be checked statically are translated into run-time tests. The framework allows the use of assertions to be optional. It also allows using very general properties in assertions, beyond the predefined set understandable by the static analyzer and including properties defined by user programs. We also report briefly on an implementation of the framework. The resulting tool generates and checks assertions for Prolog, CLP(R), and CHIP/CLP(fd) programs, and integrates compile-time and run-time checking in a uniform way. The tool allows using properties such as types, modes, non-failure, determinacy, and computational cost, and can treat modules separately, performing incremental analysis

    FUZZY LOGIC VELOCITY OPTIMIZATION OF AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES BASED ON ROAD BUMP GEOMETRY

    In today’s world of fast developing technologies, semi-autonomous vehicles are becoming a common sight and increasing in numbers. Some feature autopilot systems that drive the vehicle without any intervention from the driver in certain situations or warn the driver of dangers ahead. A fully autonomous vehicle is yet to come due to old fashioned road infrastructures that would convey challenging scenarios for it. From speed bumps and traffic lights to road lanes and warning signs, current autopilot systems will have to cope with all. A system that ensures safe crossing of speed bumps when in autopilot mode is discussed in this paper. Crossing a speed bump at high speeds may result in loss of control, suspension failure, onboard cargo damage, and/or compromised passenger comfort. The proposed system can detect a speed bump from a distance, calculate the suitable crossing speed by studying vertical acceleration disturbances, and apply the brakes automatically using a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to reduce the speed before the car reaches the speed bump
