    Integral Sensor Fault Detection and Isolation for Railway Traction Drive

    Due to the increasing importance of reliability and availability of electric traction drives in Railway applications, early detection of faults has become an important key for Railway traction drive manufacturers. Sensor faults are important sources of failures. Among the different fault diagnosis approaches, in this article an integral diagnosis strategy for sensors in traction drives is presented. Such strategy is composed of an observer-based approach for direct current (DC)-link voltage and catenary current sensors, a frequency analysis approach for motor current phase sensors and a hardware redundancy solution for speed sensors. None of them requires any hardware change requirement in the actual traction drive. All the fault detection and isolation approaches have been validated in a Hardware-in-the-loop platform comprising a Real Time Simulator and a commercial Traction Control Unit for a tram. In comparison to safety-critical systems in Aerospace applications, Railway applications do not need instantaneous detection, and the diagnosis is validated in a short time period for reliable decision. Combining the different approaches and existing hardware redundancy, an integral fault diagnosis solution is provided, to detect and isolate faults in all the sensors installed in the traction drive

    A robust diagnosis method for speed sensor fault based on stator currents in the RFOC induction motor drive

    A valid diagnosis method for the speed sensor failure (SSF) is an essential requirement to ensure the reliability of Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) models in induction motor drive (IMD) systems. Most recent researches have focused on directly comparing the measured and estimated rotor speed signal to detect the speed sensor fault. However, using that such estimated value in both the fault diagnosis and the controller reconfiguration phases leads to the insufficient performance of FTC modes. In this paper, a novel diagnosis-technique based on the stator current model combined with a confusion prevention condition is proposed to detect the failure states of the speed sensor in the IMD systems. It helps the FTC mode to separate between the diagnosis and reconfiguration phases against a speed sensor fault. This proposed SSF diagnosis method can also effectively apply for IMs’ applications at the low-speed range where the speed sensor signal often suffers from noise. MATLAB/Simulink software has been used to implement the simulations in various speed ranges. The achieved results have demonstrated the capability and effectiveness of the proposed SSF method against speed sensor faults

    Improved Sensor Fault-Tolerant Control Technique Applied to Three-Phase Induction Motor Drive

    An improved fault-tolerant control (FTC) method using mathematical functions is applied to the induction motor drive (IMD) against current sensors and speed encoder failures, which occur when the sensor is disconnected or completely damaged. The IMD with two current sensors and an encoder is speed controlled based on the field-oriented control (FOC) technique in regular operation. In this paper, an FTC unit is implemented in the FOC controller to detect and solve the sensor fault to increase the reliability of the speed control process. The measured stator currents and the feedback speed signal are integrated into the diagnosis algorithms to create a sensor fault-tolerant control function. Three diagnosis functions operating in a defined sequence are proposed for determining the health status of current and speed sensors. The FTC function performs isolation and replaces the faulty sensor signals with the proper estimated signals; then, the IMD will operate in the corresponding sensorless mode. Simulations will be performed to verify the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method under various sensor faults

    Real-Time Fault Diagnosis of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and Drive System

    Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) have gained massive popularity in industrial applications such as electric vehicles, robotic systems, and offshore industries due to their merits of efficiency, power density, and controllability. PMSMs working in such applications are constantly exposed to electrical, thermal, and mechanical stresses, resulting in different faults such as electrical, mechanical, and magnetic faults. These faults may lead to efficiency reduction, excessive heat, and even catastrophic system breakdown if not diagnosed in time. Therefore, developing methods for real-time condition monitoring and detection of faults at early stages can substantially lower maintenance costs, downtime of the system, and productivity loss. In this dissertation, condition monitoring and detection of the three most common faults in PMSMs and drive systems, namely inter-turn short circuit, demagnetization, and sensor faults are studied. First, modeling and detection of inter-turn short circuit fault is investigated by proposing one FEM-based model, and one analytical model. In these two models, efforts are made to extract either fault indicators or adjustments for being used in combination with more complex detection methods. Subsequently, a systematic fault diagnosis of PMSM and drive system containing multiple faults based on structural analysis is presented. After implementing structural analysis and obtaining the redundant part of the PMSM and drive system, several sequential residuals are designed and implemented based on the fault terms that appear in each of the redundant sets to detect and isolate the studied faults which are applied at different time intervals. Finally, real-time detection of faults in PMSMs and drive systems by using a powerful statistical signal-processing detector such as generalized likelihood ratio test is investigated. By using generalized likelihood ratio test, a threshold was obtained based on choosing the probability of a false alarm and the probability of detection for each detector based on which decision was made to indicate the presence of the studied faults. To improve the detection and recovery delay time, a recursive cumulative GLRT with an adaptive threshold algorithm is implemented. As a result, a more processed fault indicator is achieved by this recursive algorithm that is compared to an arbitrary threshold, and a decision is made in real-time performance. The experimental results show that the statistical detector is able to efficiently detect all the unexpected faults in the presence of unknown noise and without experiencing any false alarm, proving the effectiveness of this diagnostic approach.publishedVersio

    DC-Link Voltage and Catenary Current Sensors Fault Reconstruction for Railway Traction Drives

    Due to the importance of sensors in control strategy and safety, early detection of faults in sensors has become a key point to improve the availability of railway traction drives. The presented sensor fault reconstruction is based on sliding mode observers and equivalent injection signals, and it allows detecting defective sensors and isolating faults. Moreover, the severity of faults is provided. The proposed on-board fault reconstruction has been validated in a hardware-in-the-loop platform, composed of a real-time simulator and a commercial traction control unit for a tram. Low computational resources, robustness to measurement noise, and easiness to tune are the main requirements for industrial acceptance. As railway applications are not safety-critical systems, compared to aerospace applications, a fault evaluation procedure is proposed, since there is enough time to perform diagnostic tasks. This procedure analyses the fault reconstruction in the steady state, delaying the decision-making in some seconds, but minimising false detections

    Robust fault tolerant control of induction motor system

    Research into fault tolerant control (FTC, a set of techniques that are developed to increase plant availability and reduce the risk of safety hazards) for induction motors is motivated by practical concerns including the need for enhanced reliability, improved maintenance operations and reduced cost. Its aim is to prevent that simple faults develop into serious failure. Although, the subject of induction motor control is well known, the main topics in the literature are concerned with scalar and vector control and structural stability. However, induction machines experience various fault scenarios and to meet the above requirements FTC strategies based on existing or more advanced control methods become desirable. Some earlier studies on FTC have addressed particular problems of 3-phase sensor current/voltage FTC, torque FTC, etc. However, the development of these methods lacks a more general understanding of the overall problem of FTC for an induction motor based on a true fault classification of possible fault types.In order to develop a more general approach to FTC for induction motors, i.e. not just designing specific control approaches for individual induction motor fault scenarios, this thesis has carried out a systematic research on induction motor systems considering the various faults that can typically be present, having either “additive” fault or “multiplicative” effects on the system dynamics, according to whether the faults are sensor or actuator (additive fault) types or component or motor faults (multiplicative fault) types.To achieve the required objectives, an active approach to FTC is used, making use of fault estimation (FE, an approach that determine the magnitude of a fault signal online) and fault compensation. This approach of FTC/FE considers an integration of the electrical and mechanical dynamics, initially using adaptive and/or sliding mode observers, Linear Parameter Varying (LPV, in which nonlinear systems are locally decomposed into several linear systems scheduled by varying parameters) and then using back-stepping control combined with observer/estimation methods for handling certain forms of nonlinearity.In conclusion, the thesis proposed an integrated research of induction motor FTC/FE with the consideration of different types of faults and different types of uncertainties, and validated the approaches through simulations and experiments

    Self-tuning observer for sensor fault-tolerant control of induction motor drive

    This paper introduces a new solution for the speed and current sensor fault-tolerant direct field-oriented control of induction motor drives. Two self-adjusting observers derived from a modified current-based model reference adaptive system (CB-MRAS) are presented. Finally, the recursive least squares method was used to estimate the parameters of the used observers. The method, in the proposed solution, provides a very fast and accurate finding of the observer parameters while maintaining relative simplicity and ease of implementation. The presented algorithm eliminates the CB-MRAS observer dependence on the induction motor parameters and also compensates for the inaccuracies in the evaluation of the stator voltage vector. The proposed fault-tolerant control offers the drive operation while either a speed sensor or one/two current sensors fault occurs. The drive still works with the direct field-oriented control even when no current sensors are healthy. The proposed scheme was simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink software environment. Then the algorithm was implemented in a floating-point digital signal controller (DSC) TMS320F28335 and tested on an induction motor drive prototype of rated power of 2.2 kW to validate the proposed schemes.Web of Science149art. no. 256

    Comprehensive Diagnosis and Tolerance Strategies for Electrical Faults and Sensor Faults in Dual Three-Phase PMSM Drives

    IEEE In this paper, fault diagnosis and tolerant control strategies have been studied comprehensively for dual-three phase PMSM drives to improve the reliability. Based on direct torque control (DTC) with space vector modulation (SVM), a series of diagnostic and tolerant control methods have been proposed for five types of faults, namely speed-sensor fault, DC-link voltage-sensor fault, current-sensor fault, open-phase fault and open-switch fault. Firstly, diagnosis and tolerant schemes are proposed for speed-sensor fault by estimating the rotor angle speed with the rotating speed of stator flux. Secondly, diagnosis and tolerant schemes are proposed for DC-link voltage-sensor fault by combining the current model based stator flux observer with the voltage model based stator flux observer. Thirdly, a three-step method is designed to diagnose three types of faults related to current signals, namely current-sensor fault, open-phase fault and open-switch fault simultaneously. A vector space decomposition (VSD) based current estimation method is proposed to achieve fault-tolerant control for the current-sensor fault, and the voltage compensation based fault-tolerant control is presented for both open-phase fault and open-switch fault. The experiments have been taken on a laboratory prototype to verify the effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis and tolerance schemes

All of them had their specificities, but the last ones, starting in 2011, were more connected to relevant events organized on the topic. In fact, these events have been clearly the only international forums fully dedicated to diagnostics techniques in power electrical engineering. For this particular issue, it has been decided to separate the different submissions into six parts: state of the art; general methods; induction machines (IMs); synchronous machines (SMs); . electrical drives; power components and power converters. The second section includes only one state-of-the-art paper, which is dedicated to actual techniques implemented in both industry and research laboratories. The third section includes three papers on diagnostic techniques not specifically aimed at a particular type of machine. The fourth section includes three papers devoted to diagnostics of rotor faults, two dedicated to stator insulation issues, and four papers dealing with mechanical faults diagnosis in IMs. The fifth section includes papers focusing on different types of SMs. The first two papers deal with wound-rotor SMs, the following three papers are dedicated to permanent-magnet radial flux machines, and the last one deals with permanent-magnet axial flux machines. Regarding the types of faults analyzed, there are three papers devoted to the diagnosis of interturn short circuits in the stator windings, i.e., one dedicated to the detection and location of field-winding-to-ground faults and a paper devoted to the diagnosis of static eccentricities. In the sixth section, two papers investigate issues related to faults in drive sensors, and one is devoted to fault detections in the coupling inductors.
