    Verification of communicative types in the judicial public space of media discourse in the USA, Kazakhstan and Russia as a psycholinguistic marker of fact-checking

    Modern psycholinguistic research and fact-checking actively explore the space of media discourse. However, the representation of the judicial space in the mass media has not been sufficiently studied due to the peculiarities of communicative behavior in the judicial and legal space of the ethno-socius and the attitude to the judiciary. The authors hypothesize that the differences in public behavior in court and the coverage of the work of courts in the American, Kazakh and Russian media are due to the socio-cultural features of the phenomena of judicial and legal communication in public space under the influence of established traditions in such coordinate systems as “person – judicial system”, “openness – closeness of society”, “unity – disunity of society”, “accessibility – stigmatization”, “court – journalistic investigation”, etc. The results confirm the hypothesis of the authors' team, revealing the difference in the perception of the judicial system in the USA, Kazakhstan and Russia, illustrating the "rejection" of the Soviet and post-Soviet stigmatization of the judicial and legal space by the Kazakh society towards democratic norms. The prospects of the study are related to the subsequent development of an automatic system for evaluating speech behavior strategies in court and their coverage in the media as a category of fact-checking

    Checking the fact-checkers in 2008: predicting political ad scrutiny and assessing consistency

    Which types of political ads are most likely to draw criticism from fact-checkers? Are fact-checkers consistent in their evaluations of political ads? Examining general election television ads from the 2008 U.S. presidential race, and based upon the evaluations of FactCheck.org, PolitiFact.com, and the Washington Post's Fact Checker, this study demonstrates it was the attack ads from candidates that were most likely to draw scrutiny from the fact-checkers. Most importantly, a high level of agreement between the fact-checkers indicates their success at selecting political claims that can be consistently evaluated. While political advertisers are increasingly using evidence to support their claims, what may be more critical in drawing evaluations from fact-checkers is the verifiability of a claim. The implications of consistent fact-checking on the public, political actors, journalism and democracy are discussed. With the revelation that fact-checking can be consistently practiced, localized efforts at fact-checking need encouragement, particularly as political TV ads increasingly drown out other potential sources of information for the public and increasingly are used in downballot races, local initiatives, referendums and judicial races

    Due to the explosion of news materials available through broadcast and other channels, there is an increasing need for personalised news video retrieval. In this work, we introduce a semantic-based user modelling technique to capture users’ evolving information needs. Our approach exploits implicit user interaction to capture long-term user interests in a profile. The organised interests are used to retrieve and recommend news stories to the users. In this paper, we exploit the Linked Open Data Cloud to identify similar news stories that match the users’ interest. We evaluate various recommendation parameters by introducing a simulation-based evaluation scheme

    Issues in Automatic Video Biography Editing are similar to those in Video Scene Detection and Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT). The techniques of Video Scene Detection and TDT can be applied to interviews to reduce the time necessary to edit a video biography. The system has attacked the problems of extraction of video text, story segmentation, and correlation. This thesis project was divided into three parts: extraction, scene detection, and correlation.
