Strategies Small Business Owners Use to Remain Sustainable

In the United States, 41% of small retail businesses fail to succeed for longer than 5 years. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies small retail business owners used to remain sustainable for more than 5 years. The conceptual framework that grounded this study was Schumpeter\u27s innovation theory. The sample size of this research included 4 successful retail business owners located in the southeastern region of the United States who have successfully started and managed their business activities for more than 5 years. Data were collected using semistructured face-to-face interviews with successful owners of small retail businesses and reviews of the organizations\u27 internal documents. Data were coded, categorized, and labeled using coding techniques, and then validated using member checking. Data analysis processes included a thematic analysis method to identify emerging themes. The results of data analysis revealed 3 significant themes: passion and determination for doing business, market development and customer satisfaction, and business model innovation. The results indicated that the use of innovation theory enabled small retail business owners to develop innovative strategies to sustain the business for more than 5 years. The results also showed that innovation increases sales and profits for the longer term. The implications of this study for positive social change include the potential to create new jobs, enhance tax revenues and growth for governments, and improve social environments from revenue generated by employment

The objective of this paper is the conceptual review of the strategic thinking of different perceptions, thus generating a reflection of its meaning that intends to contribute to the construction of the topic of strategic planning. Those who daily face the challenge of having people (strategists) capable of designing and implementing the best strategy; which implies adaptability, flexibility, change and learning. Organizations, as a whole, are faced with the difficult task of promoting change, of establishing a clear and compelling vision, of devising and articulating the best way to achieve that vision, and to achieve this they need to find the people who are willing to lead effectively. innovative and creative, aligning the personal and organizational interests of its employees, which often requires fundamental changes in the way of acting, in the culture, in the organizational style of doing things in the strategy.El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo la revisión conceptual del pensamiento estratégico de diferentes percepciones generando así una reflexión de su significado que pretende abonar a la construcción del tema de la planeación estratégica. Quienes se enfrentan cotidianamente al reto de contar con personas (estrategas) capaces de diseñar e implementar la mejor estrategia; lo que implica capacidad de adaptación, flexibilidad, cambio y aprendizaje. Las organizaciones, en su conjunto, se enfrentan a la difícil tarea de promover cambios, de establecer una visión clara y atractiva, de idear y articular la mejor manera de lograr esa visión y para lograrlo necesitan encontrar las personas que estén dispuestas a liderar de manera innovadora y creativa, alineando los intereses personales y organizacionales de sus empleados, lo que requiere en muchas ocasiones cambios fundamentales en la forma de actuar, en la cultura, en el estilo organizacional de  hacer las cosas en la estrategia

Effective Strategies Processing Companies Use to Sustain Business Operations Beyond 5 Years

Some small food processing businesses in the United States lack strategies to remain financially viable beyond 5 years of operation. Owners and managers of small food processing businesses could benefit from an improved understanding of the importance of effective strategies to improve small business sustainability. Grounded in systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies small food processing companies use to sustain operations beyond 5 years. The participants were 1 small-business owner and 8 managers in Lexington, Kentucky, who used effective strategies to sustain business operations beyond 5 years. Data collected came from semi-structured interviews, company documents, and observations of participants during a morning staff huddle and a staff meeting. Thematic analysis and methodological triangulation were the means of analyzing the data. Three themes emerged from this study: customer service, strategic planning, and effective leadership. A key recommendation is for small business owners to identify customer expectations through active engagement and recognize the importance of customer retention. The implications for social change include the potential for food processing companies to contribute to the economic sustainability of a community, providing income to farmers, local jobs, and food to consumers
