Detecting events and key actors in multi-person videos
Multi-person event recognition is a challenging task, often with many people
active in the scene but only a small subset contributing to an actual event. In
this paper, we propose a model which learns to detect events in such videos
while automatically "attending" to the people responsible for the event. Our
model does not use explicit annotations regarding who or where those people are
during training and testing. In particular, we track people in videos and use a
recurrent neural network (RNN) to represent the track features. We learn
time-varying attention weights to combine these features at each time-instant.
The attended features are then processed using another RNN for event
detection/classification. Since most video datasets with multiple people are
restricted to a small number of videos, we also collected a new basketball
dataset comprising 257 basketball games with 14K event annotations
corresponding to 11 event classes. Our model outperforms state-of-the-art
methods for both event classification and detection on this new dataset.
Additionally, we show that the attention mechanism is able to consistently
localize the relevant players.Comment: Accepted for publication in CVPR'1
A multichannel thiacalix[4]arene-based fluorescent chemosensor for ZnÂČâș, Fâ» ions and imaging of living cells
The fluorescent sensor (3) based on the 1,3-alternate conformation of the thiacalix[4]arene bearing the coumarin fluorophore, appended via an imino group, has been synthesised. Sensing properties were evaluated in terms of a colorimetric and fluorescence sensor for Zn 2+ and F - . High selectivity and excellent sensitivity were exhibited, and off-on optical behaviour in different media was observed. All changes were visible to the naked eye, whilst the presence of the Zn 2+ and F - induces fluorescence enhancement and the formation of a 1:1 complex with 3. In addition, 3 exhibits low cytotoxicity and good cell permeability and can readily be employed for assessing the change of intracellular levels of Zn 2+ and F -
Effects of dance therapy on balance, gait and neuro-psychological performances in patients with Parkinson's disease and postural instability
Postural Instability (PI) is a core feature of
Parkinsonâs Disease (PD) and a major cause of falls and disabilities. Impairment of executive functions has been called as an aggravating factor on motor performances. Dance therapy has been shown effective for improving gait and has been suggested as an alternative rehabilitative method.
To evaluate gait performance, spatial-temporal (S-T) gait
parameters and cognitive performances in a cohort of patients with PD and PI modifications in balance after a cycle of dance therapy
Sclerite formation in the hydrothermal-vent âscaly-footâ gastropod â possible control of iron sulfide biomineralization by the animal
A gastropod from a deep-sea hydrothermal field at the Rodriguez triple junction, Indian Ocean, has scale-shaped structures, called sclerites, mineralized with iron sulfides on its foot. No other organisms are known to produce a skeleton consisting of iron sulfides. To investigate whether iron sulfide mineralization is mediated by the gastropod for the function of the sclerites, we performed a detailed physical and chemical characterization. Nanostructural characterization of the iron sulfide sclerites reveals that the iron sulfide minerals pyrite (FeS2) and greigite (Fe3S4) form with unique crystal habits inside and outside of the organic matrix, respectively. The magnetic properties of the sclerites, which are mostly consistent with those predicted from their nanostructual features, are not optimized for magnetoreception and instead support use of the magnetic minerals as structural elements. The mechanical performance of the sclerites is superior to that of other biominerals used in the vent environment for predation as well as protection from predation. These characteristics, as well as the co-occurrence of brachyuran crabs, support the inference that the mineralization of iron sulfides might be controlled by the gastropod to harden the sclerites for protection from predators. Sulfur and iron isotopic analyses indicate that sulfur and iron in the sclerites originate from hydrothermal fluids rather than from bacterial metabolites, and that iron supply is unlikely to be regulated by the gastropod for iron sulfide mineralization. We propose that the gastropod may control iron sulfide mineralization by modulating the internal concentrations of reduced sulfur compounds
The Third Dimension of Reading the Sugar Code by Lectins
Coding of biological information is not confined to nucleic acids and proteins. Endowed with the highest level of structural versatility among biomolecules, the glycan chains of cellular glycoconjugates are well-suited to generate molecular messages/signals in a minimum of space. The sequence and shape of oligosaccharides as well as spatial aspects of multivalent presentation are assumed to underlie the natural specificity/selectivity that cellular glycans have for endogenous lectins. In order to eventually unravel structure-activity profiles cyclic scaffolds have been used as platforms to produce glycoclusters and afford valuable tools. Using adhesion/growth-regulatory galectins and the pan-galectin ligand lactose as a model, emerging insights into the potential of cyclodextrins, cyclic peptides, calixarenes and glycophanes for this purpose are presented herein. The systematic testing of lectin panels with spatially defined ligand presentations can be considered as a biomimetic means to help clarify the mechanisms, which lead to the exquisite accuracy at which endogenous lectins select their physiological counterreceptors from the complexity of the cellular glycome
Tracing Noble Gas Radionuclides in the Environment
Trace analysis of radionuclides is an essential and versatile tool in modern
science and technology. Due to their ideal geophysical and geochemical
properties, long-lived noble gas radionuclides, in particular, 39Ar (t1/2 = 269
yr), 81Kr (t1/2 = 2.3x10^5 yr) and 85Kr (t1/2 = 10.8 yr), have long been
recognized to have a wide range of important applications in Earth sciences. In
recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of
practical analytical methods, and has led to applications of these isotopes in
the hydrosphere (tracing the flow of groundwater and ocean water). In this
article, we introduce the applications of these isotopes and review three
leading analytical methods: Low-Level Counting (LLC), Accelerator Mass
Spectrometry (AMS) and Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA)
From bust to boom: towards a strategic cognition perspective on Australian mining firms' adaption
While the role of executivesâ cognition in organisationsâ responses to change is a central topic in strategic cognition research, changes in firmsâ environment are typically not measured directly but described either as an event (for example, new industry legislation) or represented by a time period (e.g. when a new technology impacted an industry). The Australian mining sector has witnessed a historically significant change in demand for its products and we begin by developing measures of changes in supply and demand for key commodities during the period 1992-2008. We identify sub-groups of firms based on their activities and commodity sector and examine the relation of these variables to executivesâ cognition and to firmsâ CapEx. We find industry, firm and cognitive variables are related to both strategic cognition and firmsâ CapEx
