    Most traffic accidents may be attributed to driver impairment as a consequence of factors such as inattention, fatigue, intoxication, etc. It is now technically feasible to monitor and diagnose driver behaviour with respect to impairment with the aid of a limited number of in-vehicle sensors, however, a valid framework for the evaluation of driver impairment is still lacking. In order to provide an acceptable definition of driver impairment, a method is needed to assess both absolute and relative criteria.     Automatic Driver Fatigue Monitoring Using Hidden Markov Models and Bayesian Networks

    The automotive industry is growing bigger each year. The central concern for any automotive company is driver and passenger safety. Many automotive companies have developed driver assistance systems, to help the driver and to ensure driver safety. These systems include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane change assistance, collision avoidance, night vision, automatic parking, traffic sign recognition, and driver fatigue detection. In this thesis, we aim to build a driver fatigue detection system that advances the research in this area. Using vision in detecting driver fatigue is commonly the key part for driver fatigue detection systems. We have decided to investigate different direction. We examine the driver's voice, heart rate, and driving performance to assess fatigue level. The system consists of three main modules: the audio module, the heart rate and other signals module, and the Bayesian network module. The audio module analyzes an audio recording of a driver and tries to estimate the level of fatigue for the driver. A Voice Activity Detection (VAD) module is used to extract driver speech from the audio recording. Mel-Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients, (MFCC) features are extracted from the speech signal, and then Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Hidden Markov Models (HMM) classifiers are used to detect driver fatigue. Both classifiers are tuned for best performance, and the performance of both classifiers is reported and compared. The heart rate and other signals module uses heart rate, steering wheel position, and the positions of the accelerator, brake, and clutch pedals to detect the level of fatigue. These signals' sample rates are then adjusted to match, allowing simple features to be extracted from the signals, and SVM and HMM classifiers are used to detect fatigue level. The performance of both classifiers is reported and compared. Bayesian networks' abilities to capture dependencies and uncertainty make them a sound choice to perform the data fusion. Prior information (Day/Night driving and previous decision) is also incorporated into the network to improve the final decision. The accuracies of the audio and heart rate and other signals modules are used to calculate certain CPTs for the Bayesian network, while the rest of the CPTs are calculated subjectively. The inference queries are calculated using the variable elimination algorithm. For those time steps where the audio module decision is absent, a window is defined and the last decision within this window is used as a current decision. The performance of the system is assessed based on the average accuracy per second. A dataset was built to train and test the system. The experimental results show that the system is very promising.     Survey and synthesis of state of the art in driver monitoring

    Road vehicle accidents are mostly due to human errors, and many such accidents could be avoided by continuously monitoring the driver. Driver monitoring (DM) is a topic of growing interest in the automotive industry, and it will remain relevant for all vehicles that are not fully autonomous, and thus for decades for the average vehicle owner. The present paper focuses on the first step of DM, which consists of characterizing the state of the driver. Since DM will be increasingly linked to driving automation (DA), this paper presents a clear view of the role of DM at each of the six SAE levels of DA. This paper surveys the state of the art of DM, and then synthesizes it, providing a unique, structured, polychotomous view of the many characterization techniques of DM. Informed by the survey, the paper characterizes the driver state along the five main dimensions—called here “(sub)states”—of drowsiness, mental workload, distraction, emotions, and under the influence. The polychotomous view of DM is presented through a pair of interlocked tables that relate these states to their indicators (e.g., the eye-blink rate) and the sensors that can access each of these indicators (e.g., a camera). The tables factor in not only the effects linked directly to the driver, but also those linked to the (driven) vehicle and the (driving) environment. They show, at a glance, to concerned researchers, equipment providers, and vehicle manufacturers (1) most of the options they have to implement various forms of advanced DM systems, and (2) fruitful areas for further research and innovation

    Classification of Safety Driver Attention During Autonomous Vehicle Operation

    Despite the continual advances in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and the development of high-level autonomous vehicles (AV), there is a general consensus that for the short to medium term, there is a requirement for a human supervisor to handle the edge cases that inevitably arise. Given this requirement, it is essential that the state of the vehicle operator is monitored to ensure they are contributing to the vehicle's safe operation. This paper introduces a dual-source approach integrating data from an infrared camera facing the vehicle operator and vehicle perception systems to produce a metric for driver alertness in order to promote and ensure safe operator behaviour. The infrared camera detects the driver's head, enabling the calculation of head orientation, which is relevant as the head typically moves according to the individual's focus of attention. By incorporating environmental data from the perception system, it becomes possible to determine whether the vehicle operator observes objects in the surroundings. Experiments were conducted using data collected in Sydney, Australia, simulating AV operations in an urban environment. Our results demonstrate that the proposed system effectively determines a metric for the attention levels of the vehicle operator, enabling interventions such as warnings or reducing autonomous functionality as appropriate. This comprehensive solution shows promise in contributing to ADAS and AVs' overall safety and efficiency in a real-world setting
