    AUTOMATED DETECTION AND LAYOUT REGULARIZATION OF SIMILAR FEATURES IN INDOOR POINT CLOUD

    Automated identification of high-level structures in unorganized point cloud of indoor spaces Indoor space is an important aspect of scene analysis that provides essential information for many applications, such as building digitization, indoor navigation and evacuation route planning. In addition, detection of repetition and regularities in the organization indoor environments, such as rooms, can be used to provide a contextual relationship in the reconstruction phase. However, retrieving high-level information is a challenging task due to the unorganized nature of the raw data, poor-quality of the input data that are in many cases contaminated with noise and outliers. in point benefit from the apparent regularities and strong contextual relationships in façades. The main observation exploited in this paper is the fact that building indoor is generally constituted by a set of basic shapes repeated several times in regular layouts. Building elements can be considered as similar if they share a set of features and elements in an idealized layout exhibiting some regularities. Starting from this main assumption a recursive adaptive partitioning of the indoor point cloud is carried out to automatically derive a flexible and hierarchical 3D representation of the building space. The presented methodology is tested on a synthetic dataset with Gaussian noise. The reconstructed pattern shows a close correspondence with the synthetic one showing the viability of the proposed approach

    Automatic semantic and geometric enrichment of CityGML 3D building models of varying architectural styles with HOG-based template matching

    While the number of 3D geo-spatial digital models of buildings with cultural heritage interest is burgeoning, most lack semantic annotation that could be used to inform users of mobile and desktop applications about the architectural features and origins of the buildings. Additionally, while automated reconstruction of 3D building models is an active research area, the labelling of architectural features (objects) is comparatively less well researched, while distinguishing between different architectural styles is less well researched still. Meanwhile, the successful automatic identification of architectural objects, typified by a comparatively less symmetrical or less regular distribution of objects on façades, particularly on older buildings, has so far eluded researchers. This research has addressed these issues by automating the semantic and geometric enrichment of existing 3D building models by using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG)-based template matching. The methods are applied to the texture maps of 3D building models of 20th century styles, of Georgian-Regency (1715-1830) style and of the Norman (1066 to late 12th century) style, where the amalgam of styles present on buildings of the latter style necessitates detection of styles of the Gothic tradition (late 12th century to present day). The most successful results were obtained when applying a set of heuristics including the use of real world dimensions, while a Support Vector Machine (SVM)-based machine learning approach was found effective in obviating the need for thresholds on matchscores when making detection decisions

    Since The social logic of space was published in 1984, Bill Hillier and his colleagues at University College London have been conducting research on how space features in the form and functioning of buildings and cities. A key outcome is the concept of ñ€˜spatial configurationñ€ℱ ñ€” meaning relations which take account of other relations in a complex. New techniques have been developed and applied to a wide range of architectural and urban problems. The aim of this book is to assemble some of this work and show how it leads the way to a new type of theory of architecture: an ñ€˜analyticñ€ℱ theory in which understanding and design advance together. The success of configurational ideas in bringing to light the spatial logic of buildings and cities suggests that it might be possible to extend these ideas to other areas of the human sciences where problems of configuration and pattern are critical

This year, with all the difficulties of replicating a real face to face meetings, we are carefully planning the conference to ensure that all participants have a perfect experience.
