Examining Application Components to Reveal Android Malware
Smartphones are becoming ubiquitous in everyday life and malware is exploiting these devices. Therefore, a means to identify the threats of malicious applications is necessary. This paper presents a method to classify and analyze Android malware through application component analysis. The experiment parses select portions from Android packages to collect features using byte sequences and permissions of the application. Multiple machine learning algorithms classify the samples of malware based on these features. The experiment utilizes instance based learner, naive Bayes, decision trees, sequential minimal optimization, boosted naive Bayes, and boosted decision trees to identify the best components that reveal malware characteristics. The best case classifies malicious applications with an accuracy of 99.24% and an area under curve of 0.9890 utilizing boosted decision trees. A Survey on Security for Mobile Devices
Nowadays, mobile devices are an important part of our everyday lives since they enable us to access a large variety of ubiquitous services. In recent years, the availability of these ubiquitous and mobile services has signicantly increased due to the dierent form of connectivity provided by mobile devices, such as GSM, GPRS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. In the same trend, the number and typologies of vulnerabilities exploiting these services and communication channels have increased as well. Therefore, smartphones may now represent an ideal target for malware writers. As the number of vulnerabilities and, hence, of attacks increase, there has been a corresponding rise of security solutions proposed by researchers. Due to the fact that this research eld is immature and still unexplored in depth, with this paper we aim to provide a structured and comprehensive overview of the research on security solutions for mobile devices. This paper surveys the state of the art on threats, vulnerabilities and security solutions over the period 2004-2011. We focus on high-level attacks, such those to user applications, through SMS/MMS, denial-of-service, overcharging and privacy. We group existing approaches aimed at protecting mobile devices against these classes of attacks into dierent categories, based upon the detection principles, architectures, collected data and operating systems, especially focusing on IDS-based models and tools. With this categorization we aim to provide an easy and concise view of the underlying model adopted by each approach
The Dark Side(-Channel) of Mobile Devices: A Survey on Network Traffic Analysis
In recent years, mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets) have met an
increasing commercial success and have become a fundamental element of the
everyday life for billions of people all around the world. Mobile devices are
used not only for traditional communication activities (e.g., voice calls and
messages) but also for more advanced tasks made possible by an enormous amount
of multi-purpose applications (e.g., finance, gaming, and shopping). As a
result, those devices generate a significant network traffic (a consistent part
of the overall Internet traffic). For this reason, the research community has
been investigating security and privacy issues that are related to the network
traffic generated by mobile devices, which could be analyzed to obtain
information useful for a variety of goals (ranging from device security and
network optimization, to fine-grained user profiling).
In this paper, we review the works that contributed to the state of the art
of network traffic analysis targeting mobile devices. In particular, we present
a systematic classification of the works in the literature according to three
criteria: (i) the goal of the analysis; (ii) the point where the network
traffic is captured; and (iii) the targeted mobile platforms. In this survey,
we consider points of capturing such as Wi-Fi Access Points, software
simulation, and inside real mobile devices or emulators. For the surveyed
works, we review and compare analysis techniques, validation methods, and
achieved results. We also discuss possible countermeasures, challenges and
possible directions for future research on mobile traffic analysis and other
emerging domains (e.g., Internet of Things). We believe our survey will be a
reference work for researchers and practitioners in this research field.Comment: 55 page
