    Digital Oculomotor Biomarkers in Dementia

    Dementia is an umbrella term that covers a number of neurodegenerative syndromes featuring gradual disturbance of various cognitive functions that are severe enough to interfere with tasks of daily life. The diagnosis of dementia occurs frequently when pathological changes have been developing for years, symptoms of cognitive impairment are evident and the quality of life of the patients has already been deteriorated significantly. Although brain imaging and fluid biomarkers allow the monitoring of disease progression in vivo, they are expensive, invasive and not necessarily diagnostic in isolation. Recent studies suggest that eye-tracking technology is an innovative tool that holds promise for accelerating early detection of the disease, as well as, supporting the development of strategies that minimise impairment during every day activities. However, the optimal methods for quantitative evaluation of oculomotor behaviour during complex and naturalistic tasks in dementia have yet to be determined. This thesis investigates the development of computational tools and techniques to analyse eye movements of dementia patients and healthy controls under naturalistic and less constrained scenarios to identify novel digital oculomotor biomarkers. Three key contributions are made. First, the evaluation of the role of environment during navigation in patients with typical Alzheimer disease and Posterior Cortical Atrophy compared to a control group using a combination of eye movement and egocentric video analysis. Secondly, the development of a novel method of extracting salient features directly from the raw eye-tracking data of a mixed sample of dementia patients during a novel instruction-less cognitive test to detect oculomotor biomarkers of dementia-related cognitive dysfunction. Third, the application of unsupervised anomaly detection techniques for visualisation of oculomotor anomalies during various cognitive tasks. The work presented in this thesis furthers our understanding of dementia-related oculomotor dysfunction and gives future research direction for the development of computerised cognitive tests and ecological interventions

    Multimodal Data Analysis of Dyadic Interactions for an Automated Feedback System Supporting Parent Implementation of Pivotal Response Treatment

    abstract: Parents fulfill a pivotal role in early childhood development of social and communication skills. In children with autism, the development of these skills can be delayed. Applied behavioral analysis (ABA) techniques have been created to aid in skill acquisition. Among these, pivotal response treatment (PRT) has been empirically shown to foster improvements. Research into PRT implementation has also shown that parents can be trained to be effective interventionists for their children. The current difficulty in PRT training is how to disseminate training to parents who need it, and how to support and motivate practitioners after training. Evaluation of the parents’ fidelity to implementation is often undertaken using video probes that depict the dyadic interaction occurring between the parent and the child during PRT sessions. These videos are time consuming for clinicians to process, and often result in only minimal feedback for the parents. Current trends in technology could be utilized to alleviate the manual cost of extracting data from the videos, affording greater opportunities for providing clinician created feedback as well as automated assessments. The naturalistic context of the video probes along with the dependence on ubiquitous recording devices creates a difficult scenario for classification tasks. The domain of the PRT video probes can be expected to have high levels of both aleatory and epistemic uncertainty. Addressing these challenges requires examination of the multimodal data along with implementation and evaluation of classification algorithms. This is explored through the use of a new dataset of PRT videos. The relationship between the parent and the clinician is important. The clinician can provide support and help build self-efficacy in addition to providing knowledge and modeling of treatment procedures. Facilitating this relationship along with automated feedback not only provides the opportunity to present expert feedback to the parent, but also allows the clinician to aid in personalizing the classification models. By utilizing a human-in-the-loop framework, clinicians can aid in addressing the uncertainty in the classification models by providing additional labeled samples.     WiFi-Based Human Activity Recognition Using Attention-Based BiLSTM

    Recently, significant efforts have been made to explore human activity recognition (HAR) techniques that use information gathered by existing indoor wireless infrastructures through WiFi signals without demanding the monitored subject to carry a dedicated device. The key intuition is that different activities introduce different multi-paths in WiFi signals and generate different patterns in the time series of channel state information (CSI). In this paper, we propose and evaluate a full pipeline for a CSI-based human activity recognition framework for 12 activities in three different spatial environments using two deep learning models: ABiLSTM and CNN-ABiLSTM. Evaluation experiments have demonstrated that the proposed models outperform state-of-the-art models. Also, the experiments show that the proposed models can be applied to other environments with different configurations, albeit with some caveats. The proposed ABiLSTM model achieves an overall accuracy of 94.03%, 91.96%, and 92.59% across the 3 target environments. While the proposed CNN-ABiLSTM model reaches an accuracy of 98.54%, 94.25% and 95.09% across those same environments

    Investigation and development of a tangible technology framework for highly complex and abstract concepts

    The ubiquitous integration of computer-supported learning tools within the educational domain has led educators to continuously seek effective technological platforms for teaching and learning. Overcoming the inherent limitations of traditional educational approaches, interactive and tangible computing platforms have consequently garnered increased interest in the pursuit of embedding active learning pedagogies within curricula. However, whilst Tangible User Interface (TUI) systems have been successfully developed to edutain children in various research contexts, TUI architectures have seen limited deployment towards more advanced educational pursuits. Thus, in contrast to current domain research, this study investigates the effectiveness and suitability of adopting TUI systems for enhancing the learning experience of abstract and complex computational science and technology-based concepts within higher educational institutions (HEI)s. Based on the proposal of a contextually apt TUI architecture, the research describes the design and development of eight distinct TUI frameworks embodying innovate interactive paradigms through tabletop peripherals, graphical design factors, and active tangible manipulatives. These computationally coupled design elements are evaluated through summative and formative experimental methodologies for their ability to aid in the effective teaching and learning of diverse threshold concepts experienced in computational science. In addition, through the design and adoption of a technology acceptance model for educational technology (TAM4Edu), the suitability of TUI frameworks in HEI education is empirically evaluated across a myriad of determinants for modelling students’ behavioural intention. In light of the statistically significant results obtained in both academic knowledge gain (μ = 25.8%) and student satisfaction (μ = 12.7%), the study outlines the affordances provided through TUI design for various constituents of active learning theories and modalities. Thus, based on an empirical and pedagogical analyses, a set of design guidelines is defined within this research to direct the effective development of TUI design elements for teaching and learning abstract threshold concepts in HEI adaptations

    Intelligent monitoring and interpretation of preterm physiological signals using machine learning

    Every year, more than one in ten babies are born prematurely. In Ireland of the 70000 babies delivered every year, 4500 are born too early. Premature babies are at a higher risk of complications, which may lead to both short-term and long-term adverse health outcomes. The neonatal population is especially vulnerable and a delay in the identification of medical conditions, as well as delays in the initiating the correct treatment, may be fatal. After birth, preterms are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where a continuous flow of information in the form of physiological signals is available. Physiological signals can assist clinicians in decision making related to the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. This information, however, can be highly complex, and usually requires expert analysis which may not be available at all times. The work conducted in this thesis develops a decision support systems for the intelligent monitoring of preterms in the NICU. This will allow for an accurate estimation of the current health status of the preterm neonate as well as the prediction of possible long-term complications. This thesis is comprised of three main work packages (WP), each addressing health complication of preterm on three different stages of life. At the first 12 hours of life the health status is quantified using the clinical risk index for babies (CRIB). This is followed by the assessment of the preterm’s well-being at discharge from the NICU using the clinical course score (CCS). Finally, the long-term neurodevelopmental follow-up is assessed using the Bayley III scales of development at two years. This is schematically represented in Figure 1 along with the main findings and contributions. Low blood pressure (BP) or hypotension is a recognised problem in preterm infants particularly during the first 72 hours of life. Hypotension may cause decreased cerebral perfusion, resulting in deprived oxygen delivery to the brain. Deciding when and whether to treat hypotension relies on our understanding of the relation between BP, oxygenation and brain activity. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is the most commonly used technology to assess the ‘brain health’ of a newborn. The first WP investigates the relationship between short-term dynamics in BP and EEG energy in the preterm on a large dataset of continuous multi-channel unedited EEG recordings in the context of the health status measured by the CRIB score. The obtained results indicate that a higher risk of mortality for the preterm is associated with a lower level of nonlinear interaction between EEG and BP. The level of coupling between these two systems can potentially serve as an additional source of information when deciding whether or not to intervene in the preterm. The electrocardiogram (ECG) is also routinely recorded in preterm infants. Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) provides a non-invasive assessment of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic control of the heart rate. A novel automated objective decision support tool for the prediction of the short-term outcome (CCS) in preterm neonates who may have low BP is proposed in the second WP. Combining multiple HRV features extracted during hypotensive episodes, the classifier achieved an AUC of 0.97 for the task of short-term outcome prediction, using a leave-one-patient-out performance assessment. The developed system is based on the boosted decision tree classifier and allows for the continuous monitoring of the preterm. The proposed system is validated on a large clinically collected dataset of multimodal recordings from preterm neonates. If the correct treatment is initiated promptly after diagnosis, it can potentially improve the neurodevelopmental outcome of the preterm infant. The third WP presents a pilot study investigating the predictive capability of the early EEG recorded at discharge from the NICU with respect to the 2-year neurodevelopmental outcome using machine learning techniques. Two methods are used: 1) classical feature-based classifier, and 2) end-to-end deep learning. This is a fundamental study in this area, especially in the context of applying end-to-end learning to the preterm EEG for the problem of long-term outcome prediction. It is shown that for the available labelled dataset of 37 preterm neonates, the classical feature-based approach outperformed the end-to-end deep learning technique. A discussion of the obtained result as well as a section highlighting the possible limitations and areas that need to be investigated in the future are provided
