Privacy and security implications of active participation in online social networks: An information diffusion based approach to modeling user behavioral patterns
Doctor of PhilosophyDepartment of Computer ScienceGeorge AmariucaiDue to their wide reach, oversimplified conversations, and ability to provide quick blasts of information, online social networks (OSNs) have become an avenue where users connect to share information, news, and events around the world. Third-party recommender systems, spammers, and manipulators can learn a userâs online behavior and interests through their connections and interactions because users would often leave breadcrumbs on their interests and personality through activities - like, comments, share, repost, etc. With access to user data and sophisticated learning models, manipulation through inferential attack are now easier to achieve, causing users to struggle with privacy loss as a consequence of their participation in OSNs. Given that some users have a higher propensity for disclosure than others, a one-size-fits-all technique for limiting manipulation and privacy loss proves insufficient.
In the search to find a balance between privacy preservation and social influence, we propose a solution that uses the information spread behavior as a basis for estimating the possible exposure of users to abuse and misinformation in the network. We focus on the information spread behavior and explore how it can be used for manipulation purposes. We explore a microscopic follower-followee relationship to show how direct interactions can contribute to targeted manipulation based on inferential attack. The proposed model utilizes the userâs probability of engaging with a post as a way to measure their sensitivity to privacy loss. With this knowledge, the user can then implement a privacy preservation mechanism to minimize their privacy loss by adding noise to their profile to muddle up an attackerâs opinion of them. The result from experiments on real-world Twitter data showed that even though there will be costs to participating in OSNs, these costs can be minimized relative to the disclosure threshold set by the user as their maximum privacy loss. Additionally, we report attributes that can be tweaked to minimize the userâs exposure

Challenges and perspectives of hate speech research
This book is the result of a conference that could not take place. It is a collection of 26 texts that address and discuss the latest developments in international hate speech research from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. This includes case studies from Brazil, Lebanon, Poland, Nigeria, and India, theoretical introductions to the concepts of hate speech, dangerous speech, incivility, toxicity, extreme speech, and dark participation, as well as reflections on methodological challenges such as scraping, annotation, datafication, implicity, explainability, and machine learning. As such, it provides a much-needed forum for cross-national and cross-disciplinary conversations in what is currently a very vibrant field of research
Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns
Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse
Transdiegetic Sound and auditory immersion in an asymmetrical cooperative game
This research is looking to determine how sound interaction, in particular transdiegetic
sound, as a core mechanic affects player immersion in an asymmetrical cooperative game.
Sound design is crucial for increasing player immersion within single player game
experiences, but the issues arises in a multiplayer context where communicating with other
players can break this in-game immersion
There is rich potential of exploring the game design possibilities of separating the sensory
modalities between two players and exploring how the restricted information is conveyed
and consequently how this affects player immersion. This research expands upon this by
examining the interplay between four game design patterns; transdiegetic sound, player
communication, asymmetrical gameplay and immersive experiences.
This project developed a game which requires one player to wear a pair of headphones and
be prevented from viewing the game screen. The other player is able to see the game
screen and have the controls to move around the game environment but is not able to hear
audio cues from within the virtual space; this only being audible to the player wearing the
headphones. The research suggests that the novel design approach highlights how current
methods of measuring player immersion such as questionnaires may not always be
appropriate due to the assumptions they contain within the questions they ask.
The results also suggests that whilst the relationship between transdiegetic sound and
asymmetrical gameplay may not appear to be significant, there is an interplay between
these mechanics that influences the immersive experience for the player. This project
proposes that future work considers this interplay and avoids attempting to analyse how a
design pattern determines player immersion in isolation but that it considers how it
behaves it relation to the other design choices within the game
Social Public Health System and Sustainability
This edited volume contains 18 articles published in Sustainability from late 2018 to early 2021. During that time, the world faced the fatal and widespread health crisis, COVID-19, which had threatened the social and public health systems at every corner for quite some time.As the Guest-Editors and also a contributing authors, we are glad that the academic contents from the Special Issue will now be put together in this volume, making the authors' hard work and efforts accessible to the larger audience
Answerers' Motivations and Strategies for Providing Information and Social Support in Social Q&A: An Investigation of Health Question Answering
Social Q&A allows people to ask and answer questions for each other and to solve problems in everyday life collaboratively. The purpose of the current study is to understand the motivations and strategies of answerers in social Q&A. Thus, three research questions were investigated: 1)Why do answerers participate and contribute in social Q&A? 2)What strategies do they use to provide effective answers in social Q&A? 3)What are the relationships between motivations and strategies? The domain of health is chosen because health is one of the most popular topics that people search information and support online. A model of answering behaviors has been proposed with a composition of 10 motivations and 32 strategies related to five steps of answering behaviors - question selection, question interpretation, information seeking, answer creation and answer evaluation. Two research methods - a survey and content analysis - were used. A survey questionnaire was distributed to top answerers and recent answerers in the health category of Yahoo! Answers. Answers of the survey participants were additionally collected in order to analyze the types of health messages and the sources of the answers. Altruism was found to be the most influential motivation, followed closely by Enjoyment and Efficacy. Answerers select questions based on their confidence or interest in the topic of the question. When interpreting questions, answerers believe that they understand the question most of the time. When seeking information for answers, most of the sources of answers are from the answerers' own information and experiences. When creating answers, accuracy and completeness are the most frequently used criteria for evaluating information sources. When evaluating answers, answerers review responses to their answers from questioners, other answerers, and other members in Yahoo! Answers. Additionally, motivations and strategies of all participants, top answerers, and health experts and the relationship between motivations and strategies are reported. Findings from the current study have practical implications for promoting the use of social Q&A as well as other similar Q&A services. The other important research implication is its contributions to the body of knowledge on information providing behaviors
EMDR therapy : crucial processes and effectiveness in a non-clinical and a post-war, cross-cultural context
The aim of this thesis was to clarify mechanisms that contributed to the treatment of adult posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR). An initial review highlighted that: EMDR is efficacious for treatment of PTSD; the processes in EMDR differ from other PTSD treatments; controversy remained about the necessity and role of the eye movement (EM) component; and although the underlying mechanisms of EMDR remained unclear, evidence was emerging supporting orienting response, REM-sleep, and working memory theories of EMDR.
The first study in this thesis investigated the necessity of EMs in EMDR, and the psychophysiological correlates of EM tasks used during therapy. Sixty-two non-clinical participants with negative autobiographical memories received a single EMDR session either without EMs, or with EMs of either varied or fixed rate of speed. EMDR-with-EMs led to greater reduction in distress than EMDR-without-EMs. Physiologically, when EMs began heart rate decreased significantly; skin conductance decreased during EM sets; heart rate variability and respiration rate increased significantly as EMs continued; and orienting responses were more frequent in the EM than no-EM condition at the start of exposure. Findings indicated that the eye movements in EMDR were beneficial, and were coupled with distinct psychophysiological changes that aid memory processing.
A following study confirmed these findings by examining the effectiveness and physiological correlates of EMDR to treat trauma symptoms in a real world, post-war/conflict, developing nation, Timor Leste. Participants were 23 Timorese adults with symptoms consistent with PTSD, who served as their own waitlist control. EMDR was followed by significant and large reductions in PTSD symptoms, depression, and anxiety. Physiological responses associated with therapy confirmed changes seen previously in Western treatment sessions; physiological dearousal occurred within desensitisation sessions; heart rate decreased as EM sets began; skin conductance decreased within EM sets; and skin conductance responses that habituated in size and number in EM sets characteristic of an orienting response. Findings demonstrate EMDR can be effectively used cross-culturally, post-war/conflict, in Timor Leste, and this research adds to the body of theoretical knowledge as to how EMDR therapy works to facilitate processing of trauma memories

This thesis provides a critical and practice based investigation of personal fears of sharing personal digital data. In it, I explore the fears and growing tensions between the requirements to share personal information while maintaining the need to control and protect personal privacy. The emphasis of this study was to develop research through a series of multi-disciplinary, practice-based projects alongside external industry partners. I begin by exploring the rise in surveillance methods, from the Panopticon to the rise of social network sites and examine the consequences of sharing personal information online. Data sharing has been made easier through the proliferation of internet connected, mobile devices and wearable technologies that has led to a growing reciprocal trade in personal information in return for online services. In a world of âdigital narcissismâ and perpetual life-logging brought about by the volume of shared data, modern surveillance is an increasingly manifestation of consumer activity. However, since the Snowden revelations in 2013 which revealed the National Security Agency (NSA) was spying on US citizens, the consequence of sharing personal information has led to a proliferation of leaks, thefts, and growing anxieties amongst the public, resulting in a greater awareness of privacy concerns and wariness about divulging personal information. My research focused upon those that obstruct, withhold information, and avoid contributing to sharing personal data. Therefore, my research was designed to identify the strategies available to designers working with shared data to combat fears of data surveillance and exploitation. The outcome of my research has shown, through a series of case studies, how individuals perceive the physical environment and the proximity to their data, and how data will be shared. My research was part of the innovative Creative Exchange programme, one of four Doctoral Training Centre knowledge exchange hubs funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The aim was to develop research using multidisciplinary, practice based research projects alongside external industry partners, utilising a variety of research methods and co-design approaches to investigate concepts around the emergent subject of digital public space
