    Detecting Controllers' Actions in Past Mode S Data by Autoencoder-Based Anomaly Detection

    International audienceThe preparation and execution of training simulations for Air Traffic Control (ATC) and pilots requires a significant commitment of operational experts. Such a mobilisation could be alleviated by a decision support tool trained to generate a realistic environment based on historical data. Prior to studying methods able to learn from a dataset of traffic patterns and ATC orders observed in the past, we focus here on the constitution of such a database from a history of trajectories: the difficulty lies in the fact that past flown trajectories are properly regulated, that observed situations may depend on a wide range of potentially unknown factors and that ownership rules apply on parts of the data. We present here a method to analyse flight trajectories, detect unusual flight behaviours and infer ATC actions. When an anomaly is detected, we place the trajectory in context, then assess whether such anomaly could correspond to an ATC action. The trajectory outlier detection method is based on autoencoder Machine Learning models. It determines trajectory outliers and quantifies a level of abnormality, therefore giving hints about the nature of the detected situations. Results obtained on three different scenarios, with Mode S flight data collected over one year, show that this method is well suited to efficiently detect anomalous situations, ranging from classic air traffic controllers orders to more significant deviations. Detecting such situations is not only a necessary milestone for the generation of ATC orders in a realistic environment; this methodology could also be useful in safety studies for anomaly detection and estimation of probabilities of rare events; and in complexity and performance analyses for detecting actions in neighbouring sectors or estimating ATC workload

    Factors influencing charter flight departure delay

    This study aims to identify the main factors leading to charter flight departure delay through data mining. The data sample analysed consists of 5,484 flights operated by a European airline between 2014 and 2017. The tuned dataset of 33 features was used for modelling departure delay (e.g., if the flight delayed more than 15 minutes). The results proved the value of the proposed approach by an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.831 and supported knowledge extraction through the data-based sensitivity analysis. The features related to previous flight delay information were considered as being the most influential toward current flight being delayed or not, which is consistent with the propagating effect of flight delays. However, it is not the reason for the previous delay nor the delay duration that accounted for the most relevance. Instead, a computed feature indicating if there were two or more registered reasons accounted for 33% of relevance.     Prediction of Airport Arrival Rates Using Data Mining Methods

    This research sought to establish and utilize relationships between environmental variable inputs and airport efficiency estimates by data mining archived weather and airport performance data at ten geographically and climatologically different airports. Several meaningful relationships were discovered using various statistical modeling methods within an overarching data mining protocol and the developed models were tested using historical data. Additionally, a selected model was deployed using real-time predictive weather information to estimate airport efficiency as a demonstration of potential operational usefulness. This work employed SAS® Enterprise Miner TM data mining and modeling software to train and validate decision tree, neural network, and linear regression models to estimate the importance of weather input variables in predicting Airport Arrival Rates (AAR) using the FAA’s Aviation System Performance Metric (ASPM) database. The ASPM database contains airport performance statistics and limited weather variables archived at 15-minute and hourly intervals, and these data formed the foundation of this study. In order to add more weather parameters into the data mining environment, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) meteorological hourly station data were merged with the ASPM data to increase the number of environmental variables (e.g., precipitation type and amount) into the analyses. Using the SAS® Enterprise Miner TM, three different types of models were created, compared, and scored at the following ten airports: a) Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), b) Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), c) O’Hare International Airport (ORD), d) Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), e) John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), f) Denver International Airport (DEN), g) San Francisco International Airport (SFO), h) Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT), i) LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and j) Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). At each location, weather inputs were used to estimate AARs as a metric of efficiency easily interpreted by FAA airspace managers. To estimate Airport Arrival Rates, three data sets were used: a) 15-minute and b) hourly ASPM data, along with c) a merged ASPM and meteorological hourly station data set. For all three data sets, the models were trained and validated using data from 2014 and 2015, and then tested using 2016 data. Additionally, a selected airport model was deployed using National Weather Service (NWS) Localized Aviation MOS (Model Output Statistics) Program (LAMP) weather guidance as the input variables over a 24-hour period as a test. The resulting AAR output predictions were then compared with the real-world AARs observed. Based on model scoring using 2016 data, LAX, ATL, and EWR demonstrated useful predictive performance that potentially could be applied to estimate real-world AARs. Marginal, but perhaps useful AAR prediction might be gleaned operationally at LGA, SFO, and DFW, as the number of successfully scored cases fall loosely within one standard deviation of acceptable model performance arbitrarily set at ten percent of the airport’s maximum AAR. The remaining models studied, DEN, CLT, ORD, and JFK appeared to have little useful operational application based on the 2016 model scoring results

    Space Transportation System Technology Symposium

    The prospect of undertaking a reusable launch vehicle development led the NASA Office of Manned Space Flight (OMSF) to request the Office of Advanced Research and Technology (OART) to organize and direct a program to develop the technology that would aid in selecting the best system alternatives and that would support the ultimate development of an earth-to-orbit shuttle. Such a Space Transportation System Technology Program has been initiated. OART, OMSF, and NASA Flight and Research Centers with the considerable inputs of Department of Defense personnel have generated the program through the efforts of several Technology Working Groups and a Technology Steering Group. Funding and management of the recommended efforts is being accomplished through the normal OART and OMSF line management channels. The work is being done in government laboratories and under contract with industry and universities. Foreign nations have been invited to participate in this work as well. Substantial funding, from both OART and OMSF, was applied during the second half of fiscal year 1970. The Space Transportation System Technology Symposium held at the NASA Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio, July 15-17, 1970, was the first public report on that program. The Symposium goals were to consider the technology problems, their status, and the prospective program outlook for the benefit of the industry, government, university, and foreign participants considered to be contributors to the program. In addition, it offered an opportunity to identify the responsible individuals already engaged in the program. The Symposium sessions were intended to confront each presenter with his technical peers as listeners, and this, I believe, was substantially accomplished. Because of the high interest in the material presented, and also because the people who could edit the output are already deeply involved in other important tasks, we have elected to publish the material essentially as it was presented, utilizing mainly the illustrations used by the presenters along with brief words of explanation. Those who heard the presentations, and those who are technically astute in specialty areas, can probably put this story together again. We hope that more will be gained by compiling the information in this form now than by spending the time and effort to publish a more finished compendium later

    Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Models and Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems 2013

    Challenges arising from an increasing traffic demand, limited resource availability and growing quality expectations of the customers can only be met successfully, if each transport mode is regarded as an intelligent transportation system itself, but also as part of one intelligent transportation system with “intelligent” intramodal and intermodal interfaces. This topic is well reflected in the Third International Conference on “Models and Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems” which took place in Dresden 2013 (previous editions: Rome 2009, Leuven 2011). With its variety of traffic management problems that can be solved using similar methods and technologies, but with application specific models, objective functions and constraints the conference stands for an intensive exchange between theory and practice and the presentation of case studies for all transport modes and gives a discussion forum for control engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians and other researchers and practitioners. The present book comprises fifty short papers accepted for presentation at the Third Edition of the conference. All submissions have undergone intensive reviews by the organisers of the special sessions, the members of the scientific and technical advisory committees and further external experts in the field. Like the conference itself the proceedings are structured in twelve streams: the more model-oriented streams of Road-Bound Public Transport Management, Modelling and Control of Urban Traffic Flow, Railway Traffic Management in four different sessions, Air Traffic Management, Water Traffic and Traffic and Transit Assignment, as well as the technology-oriented streams of Floating Car Data, Localisation Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems and Image Processing in Transportation. With this broad range of topics this book will be of interest to a number of groups: ITS experts in research and industry, students of transport and control engineering, operations research and computer science. The case studies will also be of interest for transport operators and members of traffic administration

    Detecting flight trajectory anomalies and predicting diversions in freight transportation (extended abstract)

    Timely identifying flight diversions is a crucial aspect of efficient multi-modal transportation. When an airplane diverts, logistics providers must promptly adapt their transportation plans in order to ensure proper delivery despite such an unexpected event. In practice, the different parties in a logistics chain do not exchange real-Time information related to flights. This calls for a means to detect diversions that just requires publicly available data, thus being independent of the communication between different parties. The dependence on public data results in a challenge to detect anomalous behavior without knowing the planned flight trajectory. Our work addresses this challenge by introducing a prediction model that just requires information on an airplane's position, velocity, and intended destination. This information is used to distinguish between regular and anomalous behavior. When an airplane displays anomalous behavior for an extended period of time, the model predicts a diversion. A quantitative evaluation shows that this approach is able to detect diverting airplanes with excellent precision and recall even without knowing planned trajectories as required by related research. By utilizing the proposed prediction model, logistics companies gain a significant amount of response time for these cases. The work summarized in this extended abstract has been published in [Di16]
