    Material flow analysis in indentation process by 3D Digital Image Correlation

    Focusing in the application of the 3D Digital Image Correlation technique, this work proposes a material flow analysis in an indentation process. The study establishes the methodology for the calibration and implementation of the 3D image sensing technology for deformation measurements. The purpose is to continue with the validation of the DIC application to the indentation processes, where a deep penetration is achieved and extensive material flow is produced. With the 3D DIC technique is possible to perform accurate deformation measurements in not planar specimens and study the material emerging towards the exterior of the tested specimen, which is not possible with the 2D DIC technique. Although previous 2D studies were efficient detecting the flow field and von Mises strains on the specimens tested, the bulge emerging under the punch on the front surface (dead zone) could not be studied due to its predominantly 3D character. Therefore, present work implements a 3D methodology that carries out a complete study of the deformation, including the material flow that occurs on the Z axis, towards the exterior of the tested specimen, optimizing previous analyses.Universidad de Málaga.     The 3D incompressible Euler equations with a passive scalar: a road to blow-up?

    The 3D incompressible Euler equations with a passive scalar θ\theta are considered in a smooth domain Ω⊂R3\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^{3} with no-normal-flow boundary conditions \bu\cdot\bhn|_{\partial\Omega} = 0. It is shown that smooth solutions blow up in a finite time if a null (zero) point develops in the vector \bB = \nabla q\times\nabla\theta, provided \bB has no null points initially\,: \bom = \mbox{curl}\,\bu is the vorticity and q = \bom\cdot\nabla\theta is a potential vorticity. The presence of the passive scalar concentration θ\theta is an essential component of this criterion in detecting the formation of a singularity. The problem is discussed in the light of a kinematic result by Graham and Henyey (2000) on the non-existence of Clebsch potentials in the neighbourhood of null points.Comment: 5 pages, no figure

    Cavitation Characteristics of Restriction Orifices (Experiment for Shock Pressure Distribution by Cavitation on Restriction Orifices and Occurrence of Cavitation at Multiperforated Orifices Due to Interference of Butterfly Valve)

    This paper presents two experimental investigations for cavitation characteristics of restriction orifices. The first experiment is about the spatial distribution of cavitation shock pressure in a pipe at the downstream of restriction orifices. The second experiment is the investigation of butterfly valve throttling to the cavitation in a multiperforated orifice installed piping. From the results of the experiment for the cavitation shock pressure, it is concluded the maximum shock pressure remarkably increases with the decrease of cavitation number regardless of the orifice types. The maximum shock pressure becomes smallest on cone type orifice, and largest on single hole orifice. Multiperforated orifice is between this two. The results of the experiment for occurrence of cavitation due to the interference of butterfly valve show that the cavitation occurs at a relatively high cavitation number when the multiperforated orifice is placed at 1D downstream of the butterfly valve. The butterfly valve throttling accelerates the cavitation at the multiperforated orifice because of the closed orifice installation

    Online real-time crowd behavior detection in video sequences

    Automatically detecting events in crowded scenes is a challenging task in Computer Vision. A number of offline approaches have been proposed for solving the problem of crowd behavior detection, however the offline assumption limits their application in real-world video surveillance systems. In this paper, we propose an online and real-time method for detecting events in crowded video sequences. The proposed approach is based on the combination of visual feature extraction and image segmentation and it works without the need of a training phase. A quantitative experimental evaluation has been carried out on multiple publicly available video sequences, containing data from various crowd scenarios and different types of events, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach

    Automatic Structural Scene Digitalization

    In this paper, we present an automatic system for the analysis and labeling of structural scenes, floor plan drawings in Computer-aided Design (CAD) format. The proposed system applies a fusion strategy to detect and recognize various components of CAD floor plans, such as walls, doors, windows and other ambiguous assets. Technically, a general rule-based filter parsing method is fist adopted to extract effective information from the original floor plan. Then, an image-processing based recovery method is employed to correct information extracted in the first step. Our proposed method is fully automatic and real-time. Such analysis system provides high accuracy and is also evaluated on a public website that, on average, archives more than ten thousands effective uses per day and reaches a relatively high satisfaction rate.Comment: paper submitted to PloS On

    Pushbroom Stereo for High-Speed Navigation in Cluttered Environments

    We present a novel stereo vision algorithm that is capable of obstacle detection on a mobile-CPU processor at 120 frames per second. Our system performs a subset of standard block-matching stereo processing, searching only for obstacles at a single depth. By using an onboard IMU and state-estimator, we can recover the position of obstacles at all other depths, building and updating a full depth-map at framerate. Here, we describe both the algorithm and our implementation on a high-speed, small UAV, flying at over 20 MPH (9 m/s) close to obstacles. The system requires no external sensing or computation and is, to the best of our knowledge, the first high-framerate stereo detection system running onboard a small UAV
