    Digital Filter Design Using Improved Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization

    Digital filters are an important part of digital signal processing systems. Digital filters are divided into finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters and infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters according to the length of their impulse responses. An FIR digital filter is easier to implement than an IIR digital filter because of its linear phase and stability properties. In terms of the stability of an IIR digital filter, the poles generated in the denominator are subject to stability constraints. In addition, a digital filter can be categorized as one-dimensional or multi-dimensional digital filters according to the dimensions of the signal to be processed. However, for the design of IIR digital filters, traditional design methods have the disadvantages of easy to fall into a local optimum and slow convergence. The Teaching-Learning-Based optimization (TLBO) algorithm has been proven beneficial in a wide range of engineering applications. To this end, this dissertation focusses on using TLBO and its improved algorithms to design five types of digital filters, which include linear phase FIR digital filters, multiobjective general FIR digital filters, multiobjective IIR digital filters, two-dimensional (2-D) linear phase FIR digital filters, and 2-D nonlinear phase FIR digital filters. Among them, linear phase FIR digital filters, 2-D linear phase FIR digital filters, and 2-D nonlinear phase FIR digital filters use single-objective type of TLBO algorithms to optimize; multiobjective general FIR digital filters use multiobjective non-dominated TLBO (MOTLBO) algorithm to optimize; and multiobjective IIR digital filters use MOTLBO with Euclidean distance to optimize. The design results of the five types of filter designs are compared to those obtained by other state-of-the-art design methods. In this dissertation, two major improvements are proposed to enhance the performance of the standard TLBO algorithm. The first improvement is to apply a gradient-based learning to replace the TLBO learner phase to reduce approximation error(s) and CPU time without sacrificing design accuracy for linear phase FIR digital filter design. The second improvement is to incorporate Manhattan distance to simplify the procedure of the multiobjective non-dominated TLBO (MOTLBO) algorithm for general FIR digital filter design. The design results obtained by the two improvements have demonstrated their efficiency and effectiveness

    Digital Filter Design Using Improved Artificial Bee Colony Algorithms

    Digital filters are often used in digital signal processing applications. The design objective of a digital filter is to find the optimal set of filter coefficients, which satisfies the desired specifications of magnitude and group delay responses. Evolutionary algorithms are population-based meta-heuristic algorithms inspired by the biological behaviors of species. Compared to gradient-based optimization algorithms such as steepest descent and Newton’s like methods, these bio-inspired algorithms have the advantages of not getting stuck at local optima and being independent of the starting point in the solution space. The limitations of evolutionary algorithms include the presence of control parameters, problem specific tuning procedure, premature convergence and slower convergence rate. The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a swarm-based search meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the foraging behaviors of honey bee colonies, with the benefit of a relatively fewer control parameters. In its original form, the ABC algorithm has certain limitations such as low convergence rate, and insufficient balance between exploration and exploitation in the search equations. In this dissertation, an ABC-AMR algorithm is proposed by incorporating an adaptive modification rate (AMR) into the original ABC algorithm to increase convergence rate by adjusting the balance between exploration and exploitation in the search equations through an adaptive determination of the number of parameters to be updated in every iteration. A constrained ABC-AMR algorithm is also developed for solving constrained optimization problems.There are many real-world problems requiring simultaneous optimizations of more than one conflicting objectives. Multiobjective (MO) optimization produces a set of feasible solutions called the Pareto front instead of a single optimum solution. For multiobjective optimization, if a decision maker’s preferences can be incorporated during the optimization process, the search process can be confined to the region of interest instead of searching the entire region. In this dissertation, two algorithms are developed for such incorporation. The first one is a reference-point-based MOABC algorithm in which a decision maker’s preferences are included in the optimization process as the reference point. The second one is a physical-programming-based MOABC algorithm in which physical programming is used for setting the region of interest of a decision maker. In this dissertation, the four developed algorithms are applied to solve digital filter design problems. The ABC-AMR algorithm is used to design Types 3 and 4 linear phase FIR differentiators, and the results are compared to those obtained by the original ABC algorithm, three improved ABC algorithms, and the Parks-McClellan algorithm. The constrained ABC-AMR algorithm is applied to the design of sparse Type 1 linear phase FIR filters of filter orders 60, 70 and 80, and the results are compared to three state-of-the-art design methods. The reference-point-based multiobjective ABC algorithm is used to design of asymmetric lowpass, highpass, bandpass and bandstop FIR filters, and the results are compared to those obtained by the preference-based multiobjective differential evolution algorithm. The physical-programming-based multiobjective ABC algorithm is used to design IIR lowpass, highpass and bandpass filters, and the results are compared to three state-of-the-art design methods. Based on the obtained design results, the four design algorithms are shown to be competitive as compared to the state-of-the-art design methods

    Fir notch filter design: a review

    Notch filters are invariably used in communication, control, instrumentation and bio-medical engineering, besides a host of other fields, to eliminate noise and power line interferences. Digital notch filters can be designed as infinite impulse response (IIR) as well as finite impulse response (FIR) structures. As compared to the latter, IIR filters have the advantage that they require lower orders for efficient approximation of a given set of specifications. However, IIR filters are potentially unstable and do not provide linear phase characteristics, in general. FIR filters, on the other hand, are unconditionally stable and can be designed to give exact linear phase characteristics. We, in this review paper, focus our attention to the recent design techniques proposed by us for FIR notch filters. Standard FIR filter design methods, such as windowing, frequency sampling and computer-aided/optimization may be used for designing FIR notch filters. However, most of these methods result in ripples in the passbands. In many situations, maximally at (MF) filters are preferred since they have maximum attenuation in the stopband and hence can yield the best signal-to-noise ratio. A number of methods are available in the literature for designing MF digital filters. We, in this paper, review the design techniques for computing the weights of MF FIR notch filters. A number of design methodologies have been highlighted that lead to either recursive or explicit formulas for the computation of weights of FIR notch filters. Procedures for the design of FIR notch filters with maximal flatness of the amplitude response (in the Butterworth sense) at ω = 0 and ω = p have been given. Empirical formulas for finding the filter length N have also been proposed. By relaxing the linear phase property, it is possible to reduce the filter order required for a given magnitude response specifications. An FIR filter (with non-linear phase) can be derived from a second order IIR notch filter prototype. Explicit mathematical formulas for computing the weights for such FIR notch filters have been given. Design approaches based on the use of (i) Bernstein polynomials, and (ii) lowpass filter design have also been exploited to obtain maximally at FIR notch filters

    Efficient algorithms for arbitrary sample rate conversion with application to wave field synthesis

    Arbitrary sample rate conversion (ASRC) is used in many fields of digital signal processing to alter the sampling rate of discrete-time signals by arbitrary, potentially time-varying ratios. This thesis investigates efficient algorithms for ASRC and proposes several improvements. First, closed-form descriptions for the modified Farrow structure and Lagrange interpolators are derived that are directly applicable to algorithm design and analysis. Second, efficient implementation structures for ASRC algorithms are investigated. Third, this thesis considers coefficient design methods that are optimal for a selectable error norm and optional design constraints. Finally, the performance of different algorithms is compared for several performance metrics. This enables the selection of ASRC algorithms that meet the requirements of an application with minimal complexity. Wave field synthesis (WFS), a high-quality spatial sound reproduction technique, is the main application considered in this work. For WFS, sophisticated ASRC algorithms improve the quality of moving sound sources. However, the improvements proposed in this thesis are not limited to WFS, but applicable to general-purpose ASRC problems.ï»żVerfahren zur unbeschrĂ€nkten Abtastratenwandlung (arbitrary sample rate conversion,ASRC) ermöglichen die Änderung der Abtastrate zeitdiskreter Signale um beliebige, zeitvarianteVerhĂ€ltnisse. Durch die hohe Zahl der in einem WFS-Wiedergabesystembenötigten simultanen ASRC-Operationen ist eine direkte Anwendung hochwertigerAlgorithmen jedoch meist nicht möglich.Zur Lösung dieses Problems werden verschiedene BeitrĂ€ge vorgestellt. Die KomplexitĂ€tder WFS-Signalverarbeitung wird durch eine geeignete Partitionierung der ASRC-Algorithmensignifikant reduziert, welche eine effiziente Wiederverwendung von Zwischenergebnissenermöglicht. Dies erlaubt den Einsatz hochqualitativer Algorithmen zur Abtastratenwandlungmit einer KomplexitĂ€t, die mit der Anwendung einfacher konventioneller ASRCAlgorithmenvergleichbar ist. Dieses Partitionierungsschema stellt jedoch auch zusĂ€tzlicheAnforderungen an ASRC-Algorithmen und erfordert AbwĂ€gungen zwischen Performance-Maßen wie der algorithmischen KomplexitĂ€t, Speicherbedarf oder -bandbreite.Zur Verbesserung von Algorithmen und Implementierungsstrukturen fĂŒr ASRC werdenverschiedene Maßnahmen vorgeschlagen. Zum Einen werden geschlossene, analytischeBeschreibungen fĂŒr den kontinuierlichen Frequenzgang verschiedener Klassen von ASRCStruktureneingefĂŒhrt. Insbesondere fĂŒr Lagrange-Interpolatoren, die modifizierte Farrow-Struktur sowie Kombinationen aus Überabtastung und zeitkontinuierlichen Resampling-Funktionen werden kompakte Darstellungen hergeleitet, die sowohl Aufschluss ĂŒber dasVerhalten dieser Filter geben als auch eine direkte Verwendung in Design-Methoden ermöglichen.Einen zweiten Schwerpunkt bildet das Koeffizientendesign fĂŒr diese Strukturen, insbesonderezum optimalen Entwurf bezĂŒglich einer gewĂ€hlten Fehlernorm und optionaler Entwurfsbedingungenund -restriktionen. Im Gegensatz zu bisherigen AnsĂ€tzen werden solcheoptimalen Entwurfsmethoden auch fĂŒr mehrstufige ASRC-Strukturen, welche ganzzahligeÜberabtastung mit zeitkontinuierlichen Resampling-Funktionen verbinden, vorgestellt.FĂŒr diese Klasse von Strukturen wird eine Reihe angepasster Resampling-Funktionen vorgeschlagen,welche in Verbindung mit den entwickelten optimalen Entwurfsmethoden signifikanteQualitĂ€tssteigerungen ermöglichen.Die Vielzahl von ASRC-Strukturen sowie deren Design-Parameter bildet eine Hauptschwierigkeitbei der Auswahl eines fĂŒr eine gegebene Anwendung geeigneten Verfahrens.Evaluation und Performance-Vergleiche bilden daher einen dritten Schwerpunkt. Dazu wirdzum Einen der Einfluss verschiedener Entwurfsparameter auf die erzielbare QualitĂ€t vonASRC-Algorithmen untersucht.     Design of digital differentiators

    A digital differentiator simply involves the derivation of an input signal. This work includes the presentation of first-degree and second-degree differentiators, which are designed as both infinite-impulse-response (IIR) filters and finite-impulse-response (FIR) filters. The proposed differentiators have low-pass magnitude response characteristics, thereby rejecting noise frequencies higher than the cut-off frequency. Both steady-state frequency-domain characteristics and Time-domain analyses are given for the proposed differentiators. It is shown that the proposed differentiators perform well when compared to previously proposed filters. When considering the time-domain characteristics of the differentiators, the processing of quantized signals proved especially enlightening, in terms of the filtering effects of the proposed differentiators. The coefficients of the proposed differentiators are obtained using an optimization algorithm, while the optimization objectives include magnitude and phase response. The low-pass characteristic of the proposed differentiators is achieved by minimizing the filter variance. The low-pass differentiators designed show the steep roll-off, as well as having highly accurate magnitude response in the pass-band. While having a history of over three hundred years, the design of fractional differentiator has become a ‘hot topic’ in recent decades. One challenging problem in this area is that there are many different definitions to describe the fractional model, such as the Riemann-Liouville and Caputo definitions. Through use of a feedback structure, based on the Riemann-Liouville definition. It is shown that the performance of the fractional differentiator can be improved in both the frequency-domain and time-domain. Two applications based on the proposed differentiators are described in the thesis. Specifically, the first of these involves the application of second degree differentiators in the estimation of the frequency components of a power system.
