    Improving Computer Based Speech Therapy Using a Fuzzy Expert System

We focus especially on using a fuzzy expert system in order to determine specific parameters of personalized therapy, i.e. the number, length and content of training sessions.     An interactive speech training system with virtual reality articulation for Mandarin-speaking hearing impaired children

    The present project involved the development of a novel interactive speech training system based on virtual reality articulation and examination of the efficacy of the system for hearing impaired (HI) children. Twenty meaningful Mandarin words were presented to the HI children via a 3-D talking head during articulation training. Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) and graphic transform technology were used to depict movements of various articulators. In addition, speech corpuses were organized in listening and speaking training modules of the system to help improve language skills of the HI children. Accuracy of virtual reality articulatory movement was evaluated through a series of experiments. Finally, a pilot test was performed to train two HI children using the system. Preliminary results showed improvement in speech production by the HI children, and the system was recognized as acceptable and interesting for children. It can be concluded that the training system is effective and valid in articulation training for HI children. © 2013 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Robust phoneme recognition for a speech therapy environment

    Traditional speech therapy approaches for speech sound disorders have a lot of advantages to gain from computerbased therapy systems. With speech recognition techniques the motivation elements of these systems can be automated in order to get an interactive environment that motivates the therapy attendee towards better performances. Here we propose a robust phoneme recognition solution for an interactive environment for speech therapy. We compare the results of hierarchical and flat classification, with naive Bayes, support vector machines andkernel density estimation on linear predictive coding coefficients and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients.N/

    Using Information Communications Technologies to Implement Universal Design for Learning

    The purpose of this paper is to assist Ministries of Education, their donors and partners, Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs), and the practitioner community funded by and working with USAID to select, pilot, and (as appropriate) scale up ICT4E solutions to facilitate the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), with a particular emphasis on supporting students with disabilities to acquire literacy and numeracy skills. The paper focuses primarily on how technology can support foundational skills acquisition for students with disabilities, while also explaining when, why, and how technologies that assist students with disabilities can, in some applications, have positive impacts on all students’ basic skills development. In 2018, USAID released the Toolkit for Universal Design for Learning to Help All Children Read, section 3.1 of which provides basic information on the role of technologies to support UDL principles and classroom learning. This paper expands upon that work and offers more extensive advice on using ICT4E1 to advance equitable access to high quality learning. Like the UDL toolkit, the audience for this guide is mainly Ministries of Education and development agencies working in the area of education, but this resource can also be helpful for DPOs and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) wishing to pilot or spearhead ICT initiatives. Content for this paper was informed by expert interviews and reviews of field reports during 2018. These included programs associated with United Nations, Zero Project, World Innovation Summit, UNESCO Mobile Learning Awards, and USAID’s All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development. Relevant case studies of select education programs integrating technology to improve learning outcomes for students with disabilities were summarized for this document

    The WOZ Recognizer: A Tool For Understanding User Perceptions of Sketch-Based Interfaces

    Sketch recognition has the potential to be an important input method for computers in the coming years; however, designing and building an accurate and sophisticated sketch recognition system is a time consuming and daunting task. Since sketch recognition is still at a level where mistakes are common, it is important to understand how users perceive and tolerate recognition errors and other user interface elements with these imperfect systems. A problem in performing this type of research is that we cannot easily control aspects of recognition in order to rigorously study the systems. We performed a study examining user perceptions of three pen-based systems for creating logic gate diagrams: a sketch-based interface, a WIMP-based interface, and a hybrid interface that combined elements of sketching and WIMP. We found that users preferred the sketch-based interface and we identified important criteria for pen-based application design. This work exposed the issue of studying recognition systems without fine-grained control over accuracy, recognition mode, and other recognizer properties. In order to solve this problem, we developed a Wizard of Oz sketch recognition tool, the WOZ Recognizer, that supports controlled symbol and position accuracy and batch and streaming recognition modes for a variety of sketching domains. We present the design of the WOZ Recognizer, modeling recognition domains using graphs, symbol alphabets, and grammars; and discuss the types of recognition errors we included in its design. Further, we discuss how the WOZ Recognizer simulates sketch recognition, controlling the WOZ Recognizer, and how users interact with it. In addition, we present an evaluative user study of the WOZ Recognizer and the lessons we learned. We have used the WOZ Recognizer to perform two user studies examining user perceptions of sketch recognition; both studies focused on mathematical sketching. In the first study, we examined whether users prefer recognition feedback now (real-time recognition) or later (batch recognition) in relation to different recognition accuracies and sketch complexities. We found that participants displayed a preference for real-time recognition in some situations (multiple expressions, low accuracy), but no statistical preference in others. In our second study, we examined whether users displayed a greater tolerance for recognition errors when they used mathematical sketching applications they found interesting or useful compared to applications they found less interesting. Participants felt they had a greater tolerance for the applications they preferred, although our statistical analysis did not positively support this. In addition to the research already performed, we propose several avenues for future research into user perceptions of sketch recognition that we believe will be of value to sketch recognizer researchers and application designers

For example, the BMW 7 series driver-controlled systems, contains over 700 functions. Whereas, it makes easier to navigate streets, talk on phone and more, this may lead to visual distraction, since when paying attention to a task not driving related, the brain focus on that activity. That distraction is, according to studies, the third cause of accidents, only surpassed by speeding and drunk driving. Driver distraction is stressed as the main concern by regulators, in particular, National Highway Transportation Safety Agency (NHTSA), which is developing recommended limits for the amount of time a driver needs to spend glancing away from the road to operate in-car features. Diverting attention from driving can be fatal; therefore, automakers have been challenged to design safer and comfortable human-machine interfaces (HMIs) without missing the latest technological achievements. This dissertation aims to mitigate driver distraction by developing a gestural recognition system that allows the user a more comfortable and intuitive experience while driving. The developed system outlines the algorithms to recognize gestures using the capacitive technology.Impulsionados pelos avanços tecnológicos, os automóveis tem de forma continua aumentado em complexidade, sobretudo na forma como os conductores e passageiros interagem com os seus veículos. Por exemplo, os sistemas controlados pelo condutor do BMW série 7 continham mais de 700 funções. Embora, isto facilite a navegação entre locais, falar ao telemóvel entre outros, isso pode levar a uma distração visual, já que ao prestar atenção a uma tarefa não relacionados com a condução, o cérebro se concentra nessa atividade. Essa distração é, de acordo com os estudos, a terceira causa de acidentes, apenas ultrapassada pelo excesso de velocidade e condução embriagada. A distração do condutor é realçada como a principal preocupação dos reguladores, em particular, a National Highway Transportation Safety Agency (NHTSA), que está desenvolvendo os limites recomendados para a quantidade de tempo que um condutor precisa de desviar o olhar da estrada para controlar os sistemas do carro. Desviar a atenção da conducção, pode ser fatal; portanto, os fabricante de automóveis têm sido desafiados a projetar interfaces homemmáquina (HMIs) mais seguras e confortáveis, sem perder as últimas conquistas tecnológicas. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo minimizar a distração do condutor, desenvolvendo um sistema de reconhecimento gestual que permite ao utilizador uma experiência mais confortável e intuitiva ao conduzir.
