Expressive haptics for enhanced usability of mobile interfaces in situations of impairments
Designing for situational awareness could lead to better solutions for
disabled people, likewise, exploring the needs of disabled people could lead to
innovations that can address situational impairments. This in turn can create
non-stigmatising assistive technology for disabled people from which eventually
everyone could benefit. In this paper, we investigate the potential for
advanced haptics to compliment the graphical user interface of mobile devices,
thereby enhancing user experiences of all people in some situations (e.g.
sunlight interfering with interaction) and visually impaired people. We explore
technical solutions to this problem space and demonstrate our justification for
a focus on the creation of kinaesthetic force feedback. We propose initial
design concepts and studies, with a view to co-create delightful and expressive
haptic interactions with potential users motivated by scenarios of situational

The F@ Framework of Designing Awareness Mechanisms in Instant Messaging
This paper presents our research on awareness support in Instant Messaging (IM). The paper starts with a brief overview of empirical study of IM, using an online survey and face-to-face interviews to identify user needs for awareness support. The study identified a need for supporting four aspects of awareness, awareness of multiple concurrent conversations, conversational awareness, presence awareness of a group conversation, and visibility of moment-to-moment listeners and viewers. Based on the empirical study and existing research on awareness, we have developed the F@ (read as fat) framework of awareness. F@ comprises of the abstract level and the concrete level. The former includes an in-depth description of various awareness aspects in IM, whilst the latter utilises temporal logic to formalise fundamental time-related awareness aspects. F@ helps developers gain a better understanding of awareness and thereby design usable mechanisms to support awareness. Sonic City: Prototyping a wearable experience
Sonic City is a project exploring mobile interaction and wearable technology for everyday music creation. A wearable system has been developed that creates electronic music in real-time based on sensing bodily and environmental factors - thus, a personal soundscape is co-produced by physical movement, local activity, and urban ambiance simply by walking through the city. Applying multi-disciplinary methods, we have developed the wearable from a scenario-driven, aesthetic and lifestyle perspective. A garment has been crafted for 'trying on' interaction and wearabilty options with users on-site in the city. With this prototype, we have been able to expore and rapidly iterate context and content, social and human factors of the wearable application
Division of labour and sharing of knowledge for synchronous collaborative information retrieval
Synchronous collaborative information retrieval (SCIR) is concerned with supporting two or more users who search together at the same time in order to satisfy a shared information need. SCIR systems represent a paradigmatic shift in the way we view information retrieval, moving from an individual to a group process and as such the development of novel IR techniques is needed to support this. In this article we present what we believe are two key concepts for the development of effective SCIR namely division of labour (DoL) and sharing of knowledge (SoK). Together these concepts enable coordinated SCIR such that redundancy across group members is reduced whilst enabling each group member to benefit from the discoveries of their collaborators. In this article we outline techniques from state-of-the-art SCIR systems which support these two concepts, primarily through the provision of awareness widgets. We then outline some of our own work into system-mediated techniques for division of labour and sharing of knowledge in SCIR. Finally we conclude with a discussion on some possible future trends for these two coordination techniques
BOLLOCKS!! Designing pervasive games that play with the social rules of built environments
We propose that pervasive games designed with mechanics that are specifically in
opposition with, or disruptive of, social rules of the environment in which they are played, have
unique potential to provide interesting, provocative experiences for players. We explore this
concept through the design and evaluation of an experimental game prototype, Shhh!, inspired
by the juvenile game Bollocks, and implemented on Android mobile devices, which challenges
players to make loud noises in libraries. Six participants played the game before engaging in
semi-structured interviews, explored through inductive thematic analysis. Results suggest that
the game provoked in players a heightened awareness of social rules, as well as a complex
social dilemma of whether or not to act. We conclude by presenting a model for designing
games that play with the social, as well as physical, rules of the environments in which they are
set
Wearable Computing for Health and Fitness: Exploring the Relationship between Data and Human Behaviour
Health and fitness wearable technology has recently advanced, making it
easier for an individual to monitor their behaviours. Previously self generated
data interacts with the user to motivate positive behaviour change, but issues
arise when relating this to long term mention of wearable devices. Previous
studies within this area are discussed. We also consider a new approach where
data is used to support instead of motivate, through monitoring and logging to
encourage reflection. Based on issues highlighted, we then make recommendations
on the direction in which future work could be most beneficial
