    Mobile heritage practices. Implications for scholarly research, user experience design, and evaluation methods using mobile apps.

    Mobile heritage apps have become one of the most popular means for audience engagement and curation of museum collections and heritage contexts. This raises practical and ethical questions for both researchers and practitioners, such as: what kind of audience engagement can be built using mobile apps? what are the current approaches? how can audience engagement with these experience be evaluated? how can those experiences be made more resilient, and in turn sustainable? In this thesis I explore experience design scholarships together with personal professional insights to analyse digital heritage practices with a view to accelerating thinking about and critique of mobile apps in particular. As a result, the chapters that follow here look at the evolution of digital heritage practices, examining the cultural, societal, and technological contexts in which mobile heritage apps are developed by the creative media industry, the academic institutions, and how these forces are shaping the user experience design methods. Drawing from studies in digital (critical) heritage, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and design thinking, this thesis provides a critical analysis of the development and use of mobile practices for the heritage. Furthermore, through an empirical and embedded approach to research, the thesis also presents auto-ethnographic case studies in order to show evidence that mobile experiences conceptualised by more organic design approaches, can result in more resilient and sustainable heritage practices. By doing so, this thesis encourages a renewed understanding of the pivotal role of these practices in the broader sociocultural, political and environmental changes.AHRC REAC

    RETHINKING PRACTICE: A GUIDE TO DESIGNING VISITOR-CENTERED EXPERIENCES IN ART EXHIBITIONS

    Art exhibitions are informal learning environments that offer visitors wide-ranging possibilities for meaningful engagement with the arts. However, art exhibitions have been associated with social and cultural exclusion as specialized language in exhibition texts and labels may pose barriers to visitors unfamiliar with the art world. Through a multi-method approach, an empirical study was conducted to understand visitors' perceptions of their experience at an art exhibition in Guatemala City and the role of museum texts and labels. Findings revealed participants (n = 13) described their experience as connected to reflection, aesthetic appreciation, and peacefulness. The art exhibition had two types of labels. Participants perceived exhibition texts and labels both as too intellectual and oversimplified. Informed by an exploration of the literature focused on designing art exhibitions for specific purposes, this dissertation developed a guide for practice containing a framework for critical reflection, research-informed practice, and collaborative inquiry. The guide's purpose is to support practitioners by offering a tool to reflect on their work and consider the visitor as central to the process of designing an art exhibition

    Fictocritical Cyberfeminism: A Paralogical Model for Post-Internet Communication

    This dissertation positions the understudied and experimental writing practice of fictocriticism as an analog for the convergent and indeterminate nature of “post-Internet” communication as well a cyberfeminist technology for interfering and in-tervening in metanarratives of technoscience and technocapitalism that structure contemporary media. Significant theoretical valences are established between twen-tieth century literary works of fictocriticism and the hybrid and ephemeral modes of writing endemic to emergent, twenty-first century forms of networked communica-tion such as social media. Through a critical theoretical understanding of paralogy, or that countercultural logic of deploying language outside legitimate discourses, in-volving various tactics of multivocity, mimesis and metagraphy, fictocriticism is ex-plored as a self-referencing linguistic machine which exists intentionally to occupy those liminal territories “somewhere in among/between criticism, autobiography and fiction” (Hunter qtd. in Kerr 1996). Additionally, as a writing practice that orig-inated in Canada and yet remains marginal to national and international literary scholarship, this dissertation elevates the origins and ongoing relevance of fictocriti-cism by mapping its shared aims and concerns onto proximal discourses of post-structuralism, cyberfeminism, network ecology, media art, the avant-garde, glitch feminism, and radical self-authorship in online environments. Theorized in such a matrix, I argue that fictocriticism represents a capacious framework for writing and reading media that embodies the self-reflexive politics of second-order cybernetic theory while disrupting the rhetoric of technoscientific and neoliberal economic forc-es with speech acts of calculated incoherence. Additionally, through the inclusion of my own fictocritical writing as works of research-creation that interpolate the more traditional chapters and subchapters, I theorize and demonstrate praxis of this dis-tinctively indeterminate form of criticism to empirically and meaningfully juxtapose different modes of knowing and speaking about entangled matters of language, bod-ies, and technologies. In its conclusion, this dissertation contends that the “creative paranoia” engendered by fictocritical cyberfeminism in both print and digital media environments offers a pathway towards a more paralogical media literacy that can transform the terms and expectations of our future media ecology

    High-Speed Scanning Tunneling Microscopy on Thin Oxide Film Systems

    Dünne Silizium- und Germaniumdioxidfilme auf Ru(0001)-Kristallen werden hinsichtlich dynamischer Prozesse untersucht. Zwischen Oxidfilm und Substrat befinden sich Sauerstoffatome, die eine ent-scheidende Rolle in diesen Systemen spielen. Zunächst werden diese Sauerstofflagen auf Ru(0001) mittels Hochgeschwindigkeits-Rastertunnelmikroskopie (STM) analysiert. Daraufhin wird die GeO2-Monolage auf Ru(0001) bei hohen Bildraten mit einer selbstentwickelten halbautomatischen Netz-werkdetektion untersucht. Schließlich wird die SiO2-Bilage auf Ru(0001) mit konventionellen sowie mit schnellen STM-Messungen bei Raumtemperatur und bei 600 K abgebildet. Um schnelle Messungen bei hohen Temperaturen zu realisieren, wird ein Hochgeschwindigkeits-STM konstruiert, welches bei unterschiedlichen Temperaturen betrieben werden kann. Unkon-ventionelle Spiralgeometrien ermöglichen verzerrungsfreie Bilder in weniger als 10 ms aufzunehmen. Die adsorbierten Sauerstofflagen werden erstmals bei hohen Bildraten untersucht. Die experimen-tellen Ergebnisse werden durch extern durchgeführte Dichtefunktionaltheorie-Berechnungen ergänzt. In den auf Ru(0001) bei Raumtemperatur stabilen Sauerstofflagen O(2×2), O(2×1) und 3O(2×2) werden dynamische Prozesse beobachtet. Die Besetzung des Zwischenzustandes entlang des Diffusionspfades und schnelle "Umklapp"-Prozesse eindimensionaler Linien werden auf atomarer Ebene aufgelöst. Komplexe Domänengrenzen in der GeO2-Monolage auf Ru(0001) werden mit Hochgeschwindigkeits-STM abgebildet. Die Messungen an der SiO2-Bilage auf Ru(0001) zeigen dynamische Änderungen des Abbildungskontrasts, die mit den mobilen Sauertsoffatomen an der Grenzfläche zusammenhängen können. Messungen bei hohen Temperaturen zeigen dynamische Kontraständerungen von mesoskopischen Strukturen. Diese Messungen stellen die ersten schnellen Hochtemperatur-STM-Aufnahmen des Siliziumdioxidfilms dar und bilden die Grundlage für künftige Studien zu dynamischen Veränderungen in dünnen Oxidschichtsystemen.Dynamics related to thin silicon- and germanium dioxide films that are grown on Ru(0001) crystals are investigated. Between the film and the metal support oxygen species are present that play a crucial role for these film systems. First, these oxygen adlayers on Ru(0001) are analyzed by high-speed scan-ning tunneling microscopy (STM) with the focus on dynamic processes. In a next step, the monolayer of germanium dioxide (germania) supported on Ru(0001) is studied at elevated frame rates and with a self-designed semi-automated network detection. Finally, the bilayer of silicon dioxide (silica) on Ru(0001) is studied by conventional and by high-speed STM both at room temperature and at 600 K. To realize fast STM measurements at elevated temperatures, a high-speed STM is designed that can operate at variable temperatures. Images are acquired in less than 10 ms with unconventional spiral scan patterns. The dynamics in oxygen adlayers are investigated for the first time at elevated frame rates. Experimental results are supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed externally. Dynamic events are observed in the oxygen adlayers that are stable on Ru(0001) at room temperature, namely O(2×2), O(2×1), and 3O(2×2). The occupation of an intermediate state along the oxygen diffusion pathway and fast "flipping" events of atomic one-dimensional stripe patterns are observed. On the germania monolayer on Ru(0001), complex domain boundary structures are resolved with high-speed STM. In high-speed scans on the silica bilayer on Ru(0001), dynamic changes of the imaging contrast are observed that may relate to the mobile species in the oxygen interfacial layer. Measurements at elevated temperature reveal dynamic contrast changes of mesoscopic features. These measurements constitute the first high-speed STM scans on the silica film at elevated temperatures and form the basis for future studies with the focus on dynamic processes in thin oxide film systems

    Scalable Exploration of Complex Objects and Environments Beyond Plain Visual Replication​

    Digital multimedia content and presentation means are rapidly increasing their sophistication and are now capable of describing detailed representations of the physical world. 3D exploration experiences allow people to appreciate, understand and interact with intrinsically virtual objects. Communicating information on objects requires the ability to explore them under different angles, as well as to mix highly photorealistic or illustrative presentations of the object themselves with additional data that provides additional insights on these objects, typically represented in the form of annotations. Effectively providing these capabilities requires the solution of important problems in visualization and user interaction. In this thesis, I studied these problems in the cultural heritage-computing-domain, focusing on the very common and important special case of mostly planar, but visually, geometrically, and semantically rich objects. These could be generally roughly flat objects with a standard frontal viewing direction (e.g., paintings, inscriptions, bas-reliefs), as well as visualizations of fully 3D objects from a particular point of views (e.g., canonical views of buildings or statues). Selecting a precise application domain and a specific presentation mode allowed me to concentrate on the well defined use-case of the exploration of annotated relightable stratigraphic models (in particular, for local and remote museum presentation). My main results and contributions to the state of the art have been a novel technique for interactively controlling visualization lenses while automatically maintaining good focus-and-context parameters, a novel approach for avoiding clutter in an annotated model and for guiding users towards interesting areas, and a method for structuring audio-visual object annotations into a graph and for using that graph to improve guidance and support storytelling and automated tours. We demonstrated the effectiveness and potential of our techniques by performing interactive exploration sessions on various screen sizes and types ranging from desktop devices to large-screen displays for a walk-up-and-use museum installation.
