    Component-based control system development for agile manufacturing machine systems

    It is now a common sense that manufactures including machine suppliers and system integrators of the 21 st century will need to compete on global marketplaces, which are frequently shifting and fragmenting, with new technologies continuously emerging. Future production machines and manufacturing systems need to offer the "agility" required in providing responsiveness to product changes and the ability to reconfigure. The primary aim for this research is to advance studies in machine control system design, in the context of the European project VIR-ENG - "Integrated Design, Simulation and Distributed Control of Agile Modular Machinery"

It starts with an introduction to the field and a survey of specification models and languages for embedded and cyber-physical systems. It provides a brief overview of hardware devices used for such systems and presents the essentials of system software for embedded systems, including real-time operating systems. The author also discusses evaluation and validation techniques for embedded systems and provides an overview of techniques for mapping applications to execution platforms, including multi-core platforms. Embedded systems have to operate under tight constraints and, hence, the book also contains a selected set of optimization techniques, including software optimization techniques. The book closes with a brief survey on testing.     Real Time System Development with UML: A Case Study

    In this thesis we look at the challenges regarding VoIP and to the developer of an application providing this service. We explore CASE tools that can be used to model and verify the design of a VoIP application. VoIP applications will not be accepted by the market unless it is able to provide an audio quality comparable to traditional phones. The voice module of the application that we analyse initially did not meet these requirements. We investigate how the design and implementation must be altered to meet them. Although UML in its current specification is not adapted to the design of real-time applications, CASE tools exist that propose an extension of UML for this purpose. We investigate two of these - Rational Rose RT and Telelogic Tau - for their usefulness in re-engineering the application. We show their support partially covers our needs and we present novel UML concepts that would have been useful in resolving our task. We further demonstrate important new concepts of UML 2.0

    Modelling and Testing Object-Oriented Distributed Systems with Linear-time Temporal Logic

    Numerous proposals for applying temporal logic to the specification and verification of object-oriented systems have appeared in the past several years. Although various temporal models have been proposed for the requirements analysis of object-oriented distributed systems, there is no similar amount of work for the design- and implementation phase. We present a formal model for the design- and implementation stage which reflects practical requirements and is yet sufficiently general to be applied to a wide range of systems. In our model, which relies on event-based behavioral abstraction, we use linear-time temporal logic as the underlying formalism for the specification of behavioral constraints. We show that although temporal logic is a powerful tool for behavior specifications, it does not have the expressive power required for non-trivial object systems. Specifically, in an object-system it is often essential to express procedural dependencies rather than simple temporal relationships for which we introduce two novel operators. In a case study we demonstrate the practical relevance and applicability of our model
