    Towards an ecological network for the Carpathians

    The Carpathian Biodiversity Information System (CBIS) and the proposal for an ecological network for the eastern part of the Carpathians are the two main outcomes of the project funded by the BBI Matra program of the Dutch government. This brochure presents information on how the CBIS was designed, and how the data stored can be retrieved and used. It also clarifies how the CBIS data were used to design the ecological network and, last but not least, it offers recommendations for the use of the proposed ecological network in supporting sustainable developmentin the Carpathians. Due to funding restrictions, the project focused on three east Carpathian countries: Romania, Serbia and Ukraine, which together host the largest area of the Carpathians (Fig. 2). Geographically, the Eastern Carpathians also include parts of the Carpathians located in Poland and Slovakia. Data collection in the Western Carpathians (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary) will be completed by 2010 and is funded by a parallel project

    This research aims to contribute several ideas towards the implementation of the 2013 curriculum for elementary school teachers in Palembang. This descriptive qualitative research used interviews and questionnaires as data collection techniques. The results of the 2013 Curriculum implementation evaluation research were related to the constraints of teachers in implementing the 2013 curriculum. The benefits of this research are the data analyzed with arguments descriptively. The results of the study found obstacles and obstacles to the implementation of the 2013 curriculum for schools and teachers towards the mastery of science and technology, the creation of instructional media, evaluation of learning and the limitations of facilities and infrastructure so that the implementation of the 2013 curriculum could only be carried out in 2018/2019. Solutions are needed in the form of providing adequate training and workshops for teachers and education personnel. Provide the necessary facilities and infrastructure and develop technology-based assessment systems

    Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

    Beneficial Application of Facilities Management In Hotel Organizations in South-Western Nigeria

    A survey was conducted of probabilistically determined fifty-seven hotels of various ‘stars’ in South-Western geopolitical zone of Nigeria to investigate the beneficial applications of Facilities Management (FM) in the hotel organizations. Data were collected from hotel organizations through their general managers, staff and customers with the aid of questionnaires. A combination of stratified and cluster sampling techniques were used. Kothari’s formula was adopted to determine the appropriate sample size while descriptive statistics, ranking and Spearman Correlation analysis were carried out. It was found that about thirteen benefits were common to all the stakeholders (Hotel organizations, Facilities Managers and Customers) while additional five benefits were just peculiar to the Facilities Managers and Customers only. Curiously, the flaunted benefit of FM as instrument of strategic management by literature was not reckoned with, thus affirming that receptivity to FM is at low-ebb in the hotel sector of Nigeria’s economy and a pointer to ignorance of FM as instrument of strategic change. The study recommended that International Facilities Management Association (Nigeria Group), hotel organizations and Governments at all levels in Nigeria should be conscious of this development and put in place strategic actions to market and educate the gentries on the efficacy of FM in running hotel businesses

    Intelligent wireless web services: context-aware computing in construction-logistics supply chain

    The construction industry has incurred a considerable amount of waste as a result of poor logistics supply chain network management. Therefore, managing logistics in the construction industry is critical. An effective logistic system ensures delivery of the right products and services to the right players at the right time while minimising costs and rewarding all sectors based on value added to the supply chain. This paper reports on an on-going research study on the concept of context-aware services delivery in the construction project supply chain logistics. As part of the emerging wireless technologies, an Intelligent Wireless Web (IWW) using context-aware computing capability represents the next generation ICT application to construction-logistics management. This intelligent system has the potential of serving and improving the construction logistics through access to context-specific data, information and services. Existing mobile communication deployments in the construction industry rely on static modes of information delivery and do not take into account the worker’s changing context and dynamic project conditions. The major problems in these applications are lack of context-specificity in the distribution of information, services and other project resources, and lack of cohesion with the existing desktop based ICT infrastructure. The research works focus on identifying the context dimension such as user context, environmental context and project context, selection of technologies to capture context-parameters such wireless sensors and RFID, selection of supporting technologies such as wireless communication, Semantic Web, Web Services, agents, etc. The process of integration of Context-Aware Computing and Web-Services to facilitate the creation of intelligent collaboration environment for managing construction logistics will take into account all the necessary critical parameters such as storage, transportation, distribution, assembly, etc. within off and on-site project
