Designing an Aspect-Oriented Persistence Layer Supporting Object-Oriented Query Using the .NET Framework 3.5
In this article, we discuss aspect persistence, how it can be implemented in the .NET framework, and how to use the .NET framework to provide object-oriented queries for aspect-oriented persistence layers. The manner in which aspect-orientation can be available in the .NET framework is investigated in the first part of this article. Then the procedure through which adding persistence concepts to the .NET framework as aspects will be explained. In the next step, providing object-oriented querying is discussed, which is the main part of this article. Having object-oriented querying ability helps processes query in the same object-oriented domain in which objects are defined (not in the relation entities' domain). Language Integrated Query (LINQ) is used to provide the ability of querying in an object-oriented manner. Then, the translation of queries from the real objects' domain to the storage-objects' domain is explained. After such translation, the queries can be run by using the existing LINQ providers (for example LINQ to SQL). Finally, translating the result of queries back into the real objects' domain is discussed
Modularizing application and database evolution - an aspect-oriented framework for orthogonal persistence
In the maintenance of software applications, database evolution is one common difficulty. In object‐oriented databases, this process comprises schema evolution and instance adaptation. Both tasks usually require significant effort from programmers and database administrators. In this paper, we propose orthogonal persistence and aspect‐oriented programming to support semi‐transparent database evolution. A default mechanism for instance evolution is defined, but the user may provide modularized solutions using the aspect‐oriented paradigm. We present our framework AOF4OOP to test the feasibility of our proposed approach. This prototype allows programmes to transparently access data in other versions of the database schema. In this document the Cat-COVITE Application for use in the CATNETS Project is introduced and motivated. Furthermore an introduction to the catallactic middleware and Web Services Agreement (WS-Agreement) concepts is given as a basis for the future work. Requirements for the application of Cat-COVITE with in catallactic systems are analysed. Finally the integration of the Cat-COVITE application and the catallactic middleware is described. --Grid Computing
CazDataProvider: a solution to the object-relational mismatch
Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia de InformáticaToday, most software applications require mechanisms to store information persistently. For decades, Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) have been the most common technology to provide efficient and reliable persistence. Due to the object-relational paradigm mismatch, object oriented applications that store data in relational databases have to deal with Object Relational Mapping (ORM) problems. Since the emerging of new ORM frameworks, there has been an attempt to lure developers for a radical paradigm shift. However, they still often have troubles finding the best persistence mechanism for their applications, especially when they have to bear with legacy database systems.
The aim of this dissertation is to discuss the persistence problem on object oriented applications and find the best solutions. The main focus lies on the ORM limitations, patterns, technologies and alternatives.
The project supporting this dissertation was implemented at Cachapuz under the Project Global Weighting Solutions (GWS). Essentially, the objectives of GWS were centred on finding the optimal persistence layer for CazFramework, mostly providing database interoperability with close-to-Structured Query Language (SQL) querying.
Therefore, this work provides analyses on ORM patterns, frameworks, alternatives to ORM like Object-Oriented Database Management Systems (OODBMSs). It also describes the implementation of CazDataProvider, a .NET library tool providing database interoperability and dynamic query features. In the end, there is a performance comparison of all the technologies debated in this dissertation.
The result of this dissertation provides guidance for adopting the best persistence technology or implement the most suitable ORM architectures.Hoje, a maioria dos aplicações requerem mecanismos para armazenar informação
persistentemente. Durante décadas, as RDBMSs têm sido a tecnologia mais comum para
fornecer persistência eficiente e confiável. Devido à incompatibilidade dos paradigmas
objetos-relacional, as aplicações orientadas a objetos que armazenam dados em bases de
dados relacionais têm de lidar com os problemas do ORM.
Desde o surgimento de novas frameworks ORM, houve uma tentativa de atrair
programadores para uma mudança radical de paradigmas. No entanto, eles ainda têm
muitas vezes dificuldade em encontrar o melhor mecanismo de persistência para as suas
aplicações, especialmente quando eles têm de lidar com bases de dados legadss.
O objetivo deste trabalho é discutir o problema de persistência em aplicações orientadas
a objetos e encontrar as melhores soluções. O foco principal está nas limitações, padrões
e tecnologias do ORM bem como suas alternativas.
O projeto de apoio a esta dissertação foi implementado na Cachapuz no âmbito do
Projeto GWS. Essencialmente, os objetivos do GWS foram centrados em encontrar a
camada de persistência ideal para a CazFramework, principalmente fornecendo
interoperabilidade de base de dados e consultas em SQL.
Portanto, este trabalho fornece análises sobre padrões, frameworks e alternativas ao
ORM como OODBMS. Além disso descreve a implementação do CazDataProvider, uma
biblioteca .NET que fornece interoperabilidade de bases de dados e consultas dinâmicas.
No final, há uma comparação de desempenho de todas as tecnologias discutidas nesta
dissertação.
O resultado deste trabalho fornece orientação para adotar a melhor tecnologia de
persistência ou implementar as arquiteturas ORM mais adequadas
Distributed aop middleware for large-scale scenarios
En aquesta tesi doctoral presentem una proposta de middleware distribuït pel desenvolupament d'aplicacions de gran escala. La nostra motivació principal és permetre que les responsabilitats distribuïdes d'aquestes aplicacions, com per exemple la replicació, puguin integrar-se de forma transparent i independent. El nostre enfoc es basa en la implementació d'aquestes responsabilitats mitjançant el paradigma d'aspectes distribuïts i es beneficia dels substrats de les xarxes peer-to-peer (P2P) i de la programació orientada a aspectes (AOP) per realitzar-ho de forma descentralitzada, desacoblada, eficient i transparent. La nostra arquitectura middleware es divideix en dues capes: un model de composició i una plataforma escalable de desplegament d'aspectes distribuïts. Per últim, es demostra la viabilitat i aplicabilitat del nostre model mitjançant la implementació i experimentació de prototipus en xarxes de gran escala reals.In this PhD dissertation we present a distributed middleware proposal for large-scale application development. Our main aim is to separate the distributed concerns of these applications, like replication, which can be integrated independently and transparently. Our approach is based on the implementation of these concerns using the paradigm of distributed aspects. In addition, our proposal benefits from the peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and aspect-oriented programming (AOP) substrates to provide these concerns in a decentralized, decoupled, efficient, and transparent way. Our middleware architecture is divided into two layers: a composition model and a scalable deployment platform for distributed aspects. Finally, we demonstrate the viability and applicability of our model via implementation and experimentation of prototypes in real large-scale networks

This report summarises the presentations, discussions, and main results of the ECOOP’01 Workshop on Object-Oriented Business Solutions (WOOBS).
It was not a pure scientific meeting, but a mixed gathering where people from the industry and the academia met to exchange ideas, experiences and build a network of relationships with others committed to the emergence of object-oriented business solutions. WOOBS had an invited talk on quality of service, twelve presentations and lively discussions during and after them. The main conclusions were on the importance of Multi-Organisational Web-Based Systems in today’s e-commerce world, which justifies the study of a new multidisciplinary paradigm called Web-Oriented Programming
A Methodology for Engineering Collaborative and ad-hoc Mobile Applications using SyD Middleware
Today’s web applications are more collaborative and utilize standard and ubiquitous Internet protocols. We have earlier developed System on Mobile Devices (SyD) middleware to rapidly develop and deploy collaborative applications over heterogeneous and possibly mobile devices hosting web objects. In this paper, we present the software engineering methodology for developing SyD-enabled web applications and illustrate it through a case study on two representative applications: (i) a calendar of meeting application, which is a collaborative application and (ii) a travel application which is an ad-hoc collaborative application. SyD-enabled web objects allow us to create a collaborative application rapidly with limited coding effort. In this case study, the modular software architecture allowed us to hide the inherent heterogeneity among devices, data stores, and networks by presenting a uniform and persistent object view of mobile objects interacting through XML/SOAP requests and responses. The performance results we obtained show that the application scales well as we increase the group size and adapts well within the constraints of mobile devices
