    Climate Change and Critical Agrarian Studies

    Climate change is perhaps the greatest threat to humanity today and plays out as a cruel engine of myriad forms of injustice, violence and destruction. The effects of climate change from human-made emissions of greenhouse gases are devastating and accelerating; yet are uncertain and uneven both in terms of geography and socio-economic impacts. Emerging from the dynamics of capitalism since the industrial revolution — as well as industrialisation under state-led socialism — the consequences of climate change are especially profound for the countryside and its inhabitants. The book interrogates the narratives and strategies that frame climate change and examines the institutionalised responses in agrarian settings, highlighting what exclusions and inclusions result. It explores how different people — in relation to class and other co-constituted axes of social difference such as gender, race, ethnicity, age and occupation — are affected by climate change, as well as the climate adaptation and mitigation responses being implemented in rural areas. The book in turn explores how climate change – and the responses to it - affect processes of social differentiation, trajectories of accumulation and in turn agrarian politics. Finally, the book examines what strategies are required to confront climate change, and the underlying political-economic dynamics that cause it, reflecting on what this means for agrarian struggles across the world. The 26 chapters in this volume explore how the relationship between capitalism and climate change plays out in the rural world and, in particular, the way agrarian struggles connect with the huge challenge of climate change. Through a huge variety of case studies alongside more conceptual chapters, the book makes the often-missing connection between climate change and critical agrarian studies.     Effects of municipal smoke-free ordinances on secondhand smoke exposure in the Republic of Korea

    ObjectiveTo reduce premature deaths due to secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure among non-smokers, the Republic of Korea (ROK) adopted changes to the National Health Promotion Act, which allowed local governments to enact municipal ordinances to strengthen their authority to designate smoke-free areas and levy penalty fines. In this study, we examined national trends in SHS exposure after the introduction of these municipal ordinances at the city level in 2010.MethodsWe used interrupted time series analysis to assess whether the trends of SHS exposure in the workplace and at home, and the primary cigarette smoking rate changed following the policy adjustment in the national legislation in ROK. Population-standardized data for selected variables were retrieved from a nationally representative survey dataset and used to study the policy action’s effectiveness.ResultsFollowing the change in the legislation, SHS exposure in the workplace reversed course from an increasing (18% per year) trend prior to the introduction of these smoke-free ordinances to a decreasing (−10% per year) trend after adoption and enforcement of these laws (β2 = 0.18, p-value = 0.07; β3 = −0.10, p-value = 0.02). SHS exposure at home (β2 = 0.10, p-value = 0.09; β3 = −0.03, p-value = 0.14) and the primary cigarette smoking rate (β2 = 0.03, p-value = 0.10; β3 = 0.008, p-value = 0.15) showed no significant changes in the sampled period. Although analyses stratified by sex showed that the allowance of municipal ordinances resulted in reduced SHS exposure in the workplace for both males and females, they did not affect the primary cigarette smoking rate as much, especially among females.ConclusionStrengthening the role of local governments by giving them the authority to enact and enforce penalties on SHS exposure violation helped ROK to reduce SHS exposure in the workplace. However, smoking behaviors and related activities seemed to shift to less restrictive areas such as on the streets and in apartment hallways, negating some of the effects due to these ordinances. Future studies should investigate how smoke-free policies beyond public places can further reduce the SHS exposure in ROK

    The Development of Microdosimetric Instrumentation for Quality Assurance in Heavy Ion Therapy, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy and Fast Neutron Therapy

    This thesis presents research for the development of new microdosimetric instrumentation for use with solid-state microdosimeters in order to improve their portability for radioprotection purposes and for QA in various hadron therapy modalities. Monte Carlo simulation applications are developed and benchmarked, pertaining to the context of the relevant therapies considered. The simulation and experimental findings provide optimisation recommendations relating to microdosimeter performance and possible radioprotection risks by activated materials. The first part of this thesis is continuing research into the development of novel Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) microdosimeters in the application of hadron therapy QA. This relates specifically to the optimisation of current microdosimeters, development of Monte Carlo applications for experimental validation, assessment of radioprotection risks during experiments and advanced Monte Carlo modelling of various accelerator beamlines. Geant4 and MCNP6 Monte Carlo codes are used extensively in this thesis, with rigorous benchmarking completed in the context of experimental verification, and evaluation of the similarities and differences when simulating relevant hadron therapy facilities. The second part of this thesis focuses on the development of a novel wireless microdosimetry system - the Radiodosimeter, to improve the operation efficiency and minimise any radioprotection risks. The successful implementation of the wireless Radiodosimeter is considered as an important milestone in the development of a microdosimetry system that can be operated by an end-user with no prior knowledge

    This fifth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different fields of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modified Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classifiers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes.     Challenging the gold standard: a methodological study of the quality and errors of web tracking data

    Measuring what people consume and do online is crucial across the social sciences. In the last few years, web tracking data has gained popularity, being considered by most as the gold standard for measuring online behaviours. This thesis studies whether this prevailing notion holds true. Specifically, through a combination of traditional survey and computational methods, I assess the quality of web tracking data, its associated errors, and the consequences of these. The thesis is comprised of three distinct papers. In the first paper, inspired by the Total Survey Error, I present a Total Error framework for digital traces collected with Meters (TEM). The TEM framework describes the data generation and the analysis process for web tracking data and documents the sources of bias and variance that may arise in each step of this process. The framework suggests that metered data might indeed be affected by the error sources identified in our framework and, to some extent, biased. The second paper adopts an empirical approach to address a key error identified in the TEM framework: researchers’ failure to capture data from all the devices and browsers that individuals utilize to go online. The paper shows that tracking undercoverage is highly prevalent when using commercial panels. Additionally, through a simulation study, it demonstrates that web tracking estimates, both univariate and multivariate, are often substantially biased due to tracking undercoverage. The third paper explores the validity and reliability of web tracking data when used to measure media exposure. Merging traditional psychometric and computational techniques, I conduct a multiverse analysis to assess the predictive validity and true-score reliability of thousands of web tracking measures of media exposure. The findings show that web tracking measures have an overall low validity but remarkably high reliability. Additionally, results suggest that the design decisions made by researchers when designing web tracking measurements can have a substantial impact on their measurement properties. Collectively, this thesis challenges the prevailing belief in web tracking data as the gold standard to measure online behaviours. Methodologically, it illustrates how computational methods can be used to adapt survey methodology techniques to assess the quality of digital trace data

    Perception Intelligence Integrated Vehicle-to-Vehicle Optical Camera Communication.

    Ubiquitous usage of cameras and LEDs in modern road and aerial vehicles open up endless opportunities for novel applications in intelligent machine navigation, communication, and networking. To this end, in this thesis work, we hypothesize the benefit of dual-mode usage of vehicular built-in cameras through novel machine perception capabilities combined with optical camera communication (OCC). Current key conception of understanding a line-of-sight (LOS) scenery is from the aspect of object, event, and road situation detection. However, the idea of blending the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) information with the LOS information to achieve a see-through vision virtually is new. This improves the assistive driving performance by enabling a machine to see beyond occlusion. Another aspect of OCC in the vehicular setup is to understand the nature of mobility and its impact on the optical communication channel quality. The research questions gathered from both the car-car mobility modelling, and evaluating a working setup of OCC communication channel can also be inherited to aerial vehicular situations like drone-drone OCC. The aim of this thesis is to answer the research questions along these new application domains, particularly, (i) how to enable a virtual see-through perception in the car assisting system that alerts the human driver about the visible and invisible critical driving events to help drive more safely, (ii) how transmitter-receiver cars behaves while in the mobility and the overall channel performance of OCC in motion modality, (iii) how to help rescue lost Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) through coordinated localization with fusion of OCC and WiFi, (iv) how to model and simulate an in-field drone swarm operation experience to design and validate UAV coordinated localization for group of positioning distressed drones. In this regard, in this thesis, we present the end-to-end system design, proposed novel algorithms to solve the challenges in applying such a system, and evaluation results through experimentation and/or simulation

    Beam scanning by liquid-crystal biasing in a modified SIW structure

    A fixed-frequency beam-scanning 1D antenna based on Liquid Crystals (LCs) is designed for application in 2D scanning with lateral alignment. The 2D array environment imposes full decoupling of adjacent 1D antennas, which often conflicts with the LC requirement of DC biasing: the proposed design accommodates both. The LC medium is placed inside a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) modified to work as a Groove Gap Waveguide, with radiating slots etched on the upper broad wall, that radiates as a Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA). This allows effective application of the DC bias voltage needed for tuning the LCs. At the same time, the RF field remains laterally confined, enabling the possibility to lay several antennas in parallel and achieve 2D beam scanning. The design is validated by simulation employing the actual properties of a commercial LC medium
